View Full Version : Coaches can now challenge if there was a foul on an out of bounds play.

NEW YORK -- The NBA has expanded the permissible scope of coach's challenge reviews on some out-of-bounds plays, saying Tuesday that if a foul should have been called on the play it now can be assessed shortly after the fact.
The league's Board of Governors approved the move at its meeting in New York, after it was unanimously recommended by the league's competition committee last week. NBA commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to speak about the meeting later Tuesday. The change will take effect this season.
The review change could have come into play at least once in last season's playoffs, when Dallas' Kyrie Irving fouled Minnesota's Jaden McDaniels and the ball went out of bounds. No foul was called on the play, and even though the review clearly showed Irving hitting McDaniels' arm, the ball was awarded to Dallas because it went out off of McDaniels.
When such out-of-bounds plays have reviews triggered by coaches' challenges, on-court officials and the NBA Replay Center now "will be able to review the video to determine whether a foul proximate to the violation should have been called," the league said, providing that certain criteria are met.
Those criteria: whether the players involved in the uncalled foul are the same or different players than the ones involved in the out-of-bounds violation under review and how much time has elapsed between the uncalled foul and the violation.

No matter how you feel about this, the odds of it coming into play, are still relatively slim.
Will probably see less than a dozen of these type of successful challenges all season.

True, but that will lead to 5-7 minutes of dead air time while they look over it with every camera angle imaginable.

I’m fine with that. I never understood why so many types of people, that tend to be less informed, more casual fans, seem to be the only ones feigning to care about this….

The most ridiculous shit is that they can watch a vid and be like WELL, we set out to challenge this part of the play... but this other thing happened that is more important than anything else. However, we can't rule on that!
You should be able to challenge A PLAY and it will cause them to LOOK BACK AT THE PLAY and reinterpret it. All of this other shit is weirdoz. 3 point shots should be looked at and they should update the score, cuz that's just seeing if someone is on the line or not. Everything else, out of bounds, fouls, all that shit should be reviewable.
Seriously tho the most infuriating is when you clearly see something that causes a team to take an L and they are like WELL THAT'S NOT REVIEWABLE. And they are fking watching the vid of it for a review. Makes no sense.

I used to subscribe to this train of thought, I don’t care, i’ll wait, just get it right.
But I’ve been trying to get into soccer and watching games recently I realized the biggest plus for it is the flow of game with very little to none stoppage of plays. And how nice it is gets accentuated because they do have long ass VAR (I think it stands for video assist replay) stoppages and it kills it big time. Half of the time it still seems they don’t get the call right.
At first instant replay seemed like an amazing thing but more and more I’m leaning to **** it, make the call real time and move on and let them play.

I disagree. The scope of the look-back needs to limited. Imagine going back to watch a video replay and first we need to check if there were any lane violations, and next someone complained that the coach was outside of the box, and then 3rd let me watch the replay from 12 different camera angles to see if that guy really elbowed the other guy while boxing him out, and then.....
There are a million things happening in any one play. You can't ask them to comprehensively assess everything and try to find any and all violations. The other problem is what do you do when there are multiple violations? What takes precedence? It would be terrible if every challenge just resulted in a jump ball because of multiple violations.
