i watched this while it was airing like in its 3rd season or so. i thought the way you described, i believed it to be some trashy show. boy was i wrong. it's in the same tier as sopranos and the wire.

I couldn't get into Breaking Bad, but I thoroughly enjoyed BCS. I just can't relate to the drug shit I guess. That's why I never liked The Wire either.

The first Breaking Bad episode I ever saw was the beginning of season 2 while it was airing, was just flipping through the channels and saw this old man in a wheelchair whose nephew was tormenting these two poor dudes. It had me on the edge of my seat.
I knew right away this show was gonna be something special and I watched every episode after that.

Breaking Bad had me hooked instantly, I know people's taste in shows is subjective, but I can't imagine anyone watching the pilot and not wanting to continue watching the show. Imo that's probably the best pilot of a show I've seen. It's not gonna be for everyone, but for anyone not blown away by the early episodes, I'd strongly recommend just sticking with it. It gets SO good as the show progresses, and the last season is probably the best television I've seen.
The Wire was a show I legitimately did not like at first, I thought it was boring, a grind to sit through and incredibly overrated. But during the pandemic I decided to give it another try, and upon rewatch, I now genuinely consider it to be one of the greatest shows of all time.

BB was phenomenal, whatd you think of Ozark? It's not quite as good as BB, but it's top 5 all-time for me

Couldn't agree more.
I find a lot of those who think Breaking Bad is amongst the best shows ever are the ones who strictly watch network TV and nothing else. By that standard yeah, I'm sure it feels groundbreaking.

Whats a groundbreaking show for you? BB has fascinating character development and plot - acting like it's low grade television is insane.

Not saying it's low grade at all but it stands out as "elite" much easier in the company of the trash scattered around on network TV. That doesn't make it not great in its own right but I think that is a distinction worth making. I personally thought it was far better than anything else network TV is trouncing out, sure, but still didn't blow me away by any means and I personally would rather watch one of HBO or whoever elses great offerings.
Too many of my friends who don't watch TV hardly at all still jerked the show off as the greatest thing civilization has been blessed with, despite having nothing to compare it to and their gold standard being something like "Friends". :lol
I remember when the series was ending and the incredible mystique the show had on ISH and IRL with each passing episode. Nothing is that fvcking good.

Breaking Bad had a tremendous story and character arc. Watching Walt slowly transform into Heinsenberg was incredible character development, and the stakes keeps rising and rising, the tension keeps building.
Compare to The Sopranos (also an atg show btw, for different reasons) where the story never really goes anywhere, at least not until the final season. Many episodes could basically be stand-alones.

It's one of those shows that has mainstream appeal for sure, but casual TV viewers thinking its the best show ever doesn't mean it doesn't have an argument for best show ever.
I've seen the Sapranos, The Wire, GoT, Mad Men, etc.
BB is the best of the bunch for me. People who usually shit on BB don't actually watch it all the way through and appreciate how amazing the character development is, and how each season become more and more suspenseful culminating in an amazing finale. It's one of the few shows that gets better as the seasons go on, and actually has an amazing series finale.
It's a 10/10 show. I don't get the criticism

I love Breaking Bad. Have watched the entire series three or four times I think. I prefer it to The Sopranos which as another poster has already said doesn't really go anywhere. The characters and story don't develop in a way I felt they could've and should've.
It's hard to compare Breaking Bad to The Wire because they're trying to be different things. Season 4 with the kids was special.

BB is the only drama series I've probably ever finished in my life. Sopranos I've watched so many bits and pieces but never straight through. It's just so annoying having to pay for a bunch of different streaming services... Amazon prime, YouTube premium, peacock, Netflix, HBO Go, etc. I just want to buy like a dvd collection of the seasons.

i think the 3 are in the same echelon, whichever is your favorite is just a matter of subjectivity. though, the 3 seem to be ranked really high by most people so i'd wager to say they are closely grouped to each other vs other shows that are well below them.

You guys are crazy for saying The Sopranos doesn't go anywhere. I don't want to get specific in case some people here haven't seen it, but every season besides maybe season 4 has a structured storyline. I thought season 4 was kind of all over the place. Season 4 and Season 6A are probably the worst seasons. Overall it has better replay value than BB just because of the comedy, but Breaking Bad is probably better in terms of quality from start to finish, there isn't really a weak season in that show.

I would rank them
1a. Sopranos
1b. Breaking Bad
3. The Wire
The Wire is just as high a caliber of show as the other two, but I just find it to be not as consistently entertaining or rewatchable as the other two, and I think it's last season is the worst of the 3 shows. Season 4 is GOAT tier though.
I have the Sopranos over Breaking Bad for a couple reasons. One, it doesn't quite rely on coincidences to the extent that Breaking Bad does, and two, I feel like it delves much deeper into the human psyche, from the therapy scenes to the dream sequences, than Breaking Bad attempts to do. However, I feel like Breaking Bad reaches a higher peak than the Sopranos does, the end of Season 3, the end of Season 4 and it's last season are the best television I've seen.

even taking into consideration the poor re-watchability of the wire, there's almost no shows capable of being ahead of it, MAYBE the first season of true detective. curious to see what you rank as 2?

Breaking Bad might be the only show that improves every single season.
Sopranos on the other hand is meant for re-watch you have to watch the show two or three times. This is also similar to Deadwood which is a show I did not like the first time I watched but when I got older and revisted it I fell in love with it.

Breaking Bad is a rip off of Weeds. It may be better, but still a rip off.
By the time BB came out I personally had become desensitized to these over the top dysfunctional TV dramas that try to put ordinary people and families in extraordinary situations. It all got hella repetitive.
It’s also for people who have never had any crazy thuggery underground shit go on around them. My sisters best friends family growing were real life breaking bad in central California. That shit ain’t to be glorified.

I understand why someone would think that The Wire isn’t as entertaining as BB or the Sopranos, but I disagree on the rewatch value part. Breaking Bad was great because of the tension and not knowing what was going to happen next. There are certainly things to pick up on the second time around but once you know what happens and why it loses a little bit of luster.
The Wire is more nuanced from a big picture standpoint. After watching it I read David Simon’s book and watching it back it felt almost like a different show. So many things missed the first time. I’m not embarrassed to say this but I was fairly young the first time I watched it and it really opened my eyes up to a lot of things. The overall point of “yea…it is what it is” is pretty genius to me. And being able to pull it off so spectacularly to boot? Really great shit.
