View Full Version : Used truck prices are ridiculous

Just bought a used truck today. Going to go pick it up next Thursday or Friday. My wife thinks I'm nuts for spending almost 20k on a 20 year old compact truck but it only has 59,000 miles and it has the TRD Off Road pkg. No EGR or any of the newer emissions crap that messes up your engine either.
My criteria for shopping was
1st gen latest style 2001-2004
Manual transmission
4x4
I really wanted a double cab but you can't get a manual transmission with it in the first gen, and a stick was more important than the double cab to me. I have a Mustang as my daily but I've been too long without a truck. I used to have a first gen Tacoma and I missed it so much I knew I had to get another one soon
Not the actual truck in the pic I don't want any of you psychos tracking me down but almost exactly like it, except that one is a 2001 and mine is a 2004

Was debating between a Tacoma and an FJ but I find myself needing the truck bed occasionally so I chose it

Used cars in general are very pricey at least here in Canada.

One of the reasons I bought a first gen. 100% were built in California(same plant where Tesla builds their cars today). The 2nd gen 2005+ were built in Mexico and Texas(mostly Mexico). In addition to being bigger and clunkier, the newer Tacomas suffered massive paint and premature rust problems. That's why the older first gens have more resale value than the 2nd gens, and the ones in good condition keep skyrocketing in value. Toyota doesn't even make Tacomas in Texas any more, like the Dodge Ram trucks and Ford Bronco sports today, they are all made in Mexico

Ew a Mustang? Why would anyone look at an American make that’s not a truck?

There's a good reason I own one that I won't get into here. If I had to go out today and buy a new sports(or sporty) car with my own money, I probably wouldn't choose a Mustang

The toyota trucks seem to have insane resell value.
I was never a Mustang guy but I drove a newer GT not too long ago and it was actually really nice. It has a 10 or 11 speed auto transmission that makes it feel super responsive. I liked it.

Yeah a brand new Tacoma 4x4 extra cab in 2002 cost $22,700. With the SR5 and TRD options $27 and change. Inflation almost caught up with the used trucks in better condition. I've seen a lot of first gen Tacomas going for $25-30k but I doubt they'll get it
But a lot of trucks hold their value. My dad sold his Ram3500 diesel 4x4 for $26k around 2020 with 110k miles. He bought it new for $34k cash. Only $8k depreciation for 15 years and 110k miles of use. A Range Rover loses that the second you drive it off the lot :oldlol:

Nothing has better resale than a diesel. Congrats on your Tacoma though, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
And yeah rovers are overrated af. They break down too often and cost an arm and leg to fix.

thats not true. i bought a tacoma new off the lot in 2015 for 34k, traded it in for 30k with 60k miles years later. i could have gotten more money through a private party sale but i wanted the sales tax credit towards my raptor.

-SmakThat's what's up. If you aren't particularly into cars it's definitely better to just get something affordable since they're depreciating assets.
Pickup trucks back in the day used to be so spartan and utilitarian compared to pickup trucks these days. For sure they have less electronics meaning less chances of failures that aren't mechanical. But for a 20+ year-old truck the asking price is kinda hard to justify unless you're really treating it as a collector's item. And even tho they could be minor, it's likely that it's already had some issues as well given its age and mileage.

Please don't tell me you are one of those Mexicans who live in a run down trailer, apartment, or with 10 people at Mom's house with an Escalade(or in this case a Raptor) parked out front :oldlol:

Christian Bale has been driving around his 2003 Tacoma for 21 years. I guess even with his 120 million net worth, a Tacoma will do just fine

Some just want something super reliable to get you from point A to B, not throw $700,000 away on a depreciating asset like a Ferrari. Not knocking the ones who do splurge on their car, they should enjoy their money the way they want.

One of the reasons I bought the first gen Tacoma other than nostalgia, having owned one right out of high school is they are going up in price. According to insurance quotes, they've jumped in value 30% in the last 3 years. It was the last compact pick up Toyota made and the last all American assembled Tacoma too. I was set to buy another one from a dealer that bought one at an auction in California, but it was so clean when he got it, he raised the price from 21k to 28k :banghead:. Ridiculous for a 20 year old truck. The FJs also seem to be going up in value too. I should have bought one 5 years ago when I was first thinking about it.

You're not alone. Just bought a 12 year old tacoma SR5 4x4 with 70k miles for about the same price. If it's got low mileage with a good maintenance history that can be proven or that you trust it is going to command a good price. The new ones are averaging like 50k and aren't selling as fast as they should because of those prices. Since Tacomas are so reliable, you might get just as much life if not more out of that old one than you would one of the 50k new turbo 4 versions spammed with features that complicate reliability and bloated the price. I think despite the seemingly high price of the old ones, the simplicity and proven reliability of them actually makes it a good deal. It's still less than half the price of a new one and may stay on the road just as long if not longer and they will definitely be cheaper to maintain.

I bet not very many are driving 20+ year old Toyotas like Bale though
The tacoma is a bit stiff for daily driving. But it probably rides better with a decent load at its bed. Anyway, any old truck from the 00s or older sucks when it comes to nvh and ergonomics. But the worst thing about them is their automatic transmissions, which are mostly archaic 4-speeds that are slow to respond and contribute to poor fuel economy.

If any auto manufacturer other than Jeep or Volkswagen (who have made an art out of turning simple things unreliable) made a simple compact truck with roll up windows, manual shifting seats, analog everything, basic but durable upholstery, manual locking 4x4 hubs, a small reliable diesel engine, a manual transmission or basic automatic, I bet it would sell like hotcakes in the US if it was priced accordingly to it's basic build. Maybe toss in locking differentials and put a little more metal in place of the plastic you seei in most trucks these days, and it's a winner. It would just have to pass the NHTSA crash tests but that shouldn't be too hard
It's ok to be simple, basic, crude, pure mechanical or whatever. But i'm saying a lot of modern trucks have evolved so much these days that they've become more car-like than ever. Thus, some have bought them as well for lifestyle use. I mean compare the third (late 90s) and fourth generation (late 10s) ford rangers and you will see how worlds apart they are in terms of exterior, interior, specs, equipment and refinement. And makers still produce base variants for commercial use. You know, the ones with black bumpers, steel rims, fabric seats, basic stuff and what more. But for hardcore retro fanatics, they can take a look at the pickup version of the 70-series land cruiser that's still being produced and offered in middle east and other regions since the 80s. I think a y61 nissan patrol from 90s has a pickup version as well.

I remember when I bought my 2007 4Runner Limited. Was almost $13K and at the time it hurt to pay that much for 140K on on the engine. Looking back 6 years later I have zero regrets. I did a bunch of high mileage maintenance on it myself after I purchased it which actually increased my fuel economy by a considerable amount and I've kept up on maintenance since then. Crossed 200K recently and still running like a cloak, still looks almost brand new.
