Dalembert and Raef LaFrentz who were AT BEST as impactful as current McConnell or Alvarado... made more in 06 than what these guys will makethis year.

Despite the ENORMOUS cap increases.

The real winners of the huge cap today are the new versions of those guys. Karl Anthony Towns, DeAndre Ayton. Guys who dont actually produce when it counts but what talent they might have one day! Their point totals are great in February and fans think thats exciting and teams need celebrity players to sell tickets to the hoy paloy, weeeeee.

It also goes to Kawhi and Embiid, guys who are always injured when it counts. But their names are so well known. We HAVE to hang on to them at all costs!

Back in 06 I think 10 mil a year was a near max salary, and it was going to the likes of Raef LaFrentz and Sam Dalembert. Now the max is 60 million per year and it's still going to a bunch of guys who dont help you win anything important.

Always amazing to me how that works. It's not about how hard you play, how much you produce, or even if youre AVAILABLE when it matters. The best way to get paid is to drop 44 points in November using all the illegal moves in your big flashy bag.

It's not about winning. Just like in life, it's not about character. MLK got it all wrong talkin bout color of skin vs content of character. It's abiut neither of those. It's about POPULARITY. Celebrity. Tom Brady got paid 400 million dollars to talk on television, before anyone had any idea if hed even be any good at. Because hes famous. The Kelces just got 100 million dollars to do a podcast. Because theyre famous.

Quality dont matter. Substance dont matter. Whose FACE can the masses recognize. Thats the big key boys.

What a time to be alive.

McConnell's total career earnings are only slightly behing Michael Jordan's. If he plays long enough for another contract he will have earned more.

Just for the record….

Relative to the cap 06 Raef made a 2025 28million dollars. Which puts him in this range

The year may not be precise but I remember a point at which he was making 10 mill a year which is just above what McConnell's making (or maybe exactly even) and definitely above Alvarado's recent extension.

I thought 10 mil was close to a max at that time bc I remember what a big deal his contract was as a trade chip when it finally became an expirer, altho maybe it wasnt as close to a max as I assumed.

But it's just crazy how these guys make big time plays for their team, in Mcconnell's case he was instrumental in their playoff run, Alvarado was injured for some of the Pels playoff series but his effort thru out the season helped them get there... and they make WAY less than perennial losers who simply have more "star power."

I mean it's their business I suppose. If the NBA's "role players" are fine with how teams evaluate player worth, I guess so be it. I just always think it's strange when theres something stupid about a society or a system and nobody seems to notice or care.

But... in most cases, nobody seems to notice or care.

Wasn’t posted to refute anything. Just putting it in perspective for anyone wondering what 10 million was back then. Quite a few role players were way higher than he was by percentage.

Against a 27 million dollar cap.

Relative to the cap Horace grant made 77 million in 2025 money that year. They just didn’t have the luxury tax adding a massive bill on top of it like they do now so it wasn’t as big a problem to keep signing your own guys back. You just couldn’t bring anybody new in.
