I just read recently Chandler Parsons sued a guy for somehow "swindling" him out of money in a transaction that was supposed to be used as "an investment into James Wiseman's career" or something.

Just LOL at getting involved in such nonsense.

If you can pick em it can be lucrative. Agents and managers have been slipping a dozen kids a little up front in exchange for a small cut of future earnings for decades.

Its a whole industry with international baseball.

Give every promising 15 year old 500 bucks American and hope one becomes an mlb player you leech off for 15 years.

Theres a 22 year old Dominican on the Cincinnati reds who just became an all star and he’s gonna pay some predatory little company 10% of his major league earnings forever.

Thats what people like Perk and Parsons are trying to pioneer here through the NIL opening. It always happened behind the scenes but they’re making it open.

This is a risky move for one of ESPN's main basketball talking heads. It's way too easy for a business like this to look predatory. I won't judge it because I don't know what terms he's giving borrowers but he's a celebrity that could/should have a lifetime of ESPN/TNT/whoever money ahead of him. if some of these kids decide they were badly taken advantage of down the line and publicly complain he could lose his current position.

True.

Altho in the NBA I think we're seeing a trend toward players who come from more stable backgrounds and wont be roped into this as easily. I dont think many Internationals are gonna see a need for these loans. Cooper Flagg probably doesnt need it.

Data on player background and personal strengths and etc is going to increasingly drive who teams select at the top. Gonna be more Wemby's, Zach Richachers, Reed Shepperds, less James Wisemans and Marvin Bagleys.

So I dunno. This was a great business back when the league was combing the hood playgrounds for every flashy "next michael." When everyone was fighting for a Lance Stephenson to pin their hopes on. Guys who didnt have someone stable in the family looking out for them.

I just dont know that top players are gonna come from these less advantaged backgrounds much longer that are so easy to prey on.

But obviously the money is HUGE now for guys who do get deals, so I guess it makes sense even more sharks are circling.
