We live in an era of very close elections, but historically this is very much not the norm. Elections really werent often that close before Bush-Gore 2000. That kinda changed everything, curiously.

Clinton won easily vs Dole
Clinton won easily vs HW.
HW won 426 to 111 over Dukakis.
Reagan creamed Mondale
Reagan creamed Carter.

-Ford-Carter was close-

Nixon smoked McGovern
Johnson trounced Goldwater
Etc.

Even going back farther, Roosevelt won four consecutive landslides.

Landslides were practically the norm... until that abruptly changed in 2000 for whatever reason.

But around that time (2000) the basketball world was recognizing a new BITW and GOAT. Prior to that there was a lot of debate and variety of opinions but nonconsensus.

He wasnt in the NBA just yet but it didnt matter. He was the guy. He was the Chosen One. And since that time, theres really been no debate. It's been a landslide. He's that guy and everyone recognizes it.

Weird, huh?

This is a great observation about the parallel but inverse trends in presidential elections and basketball greatness around 2000 and 2002 when ESPN started airing Lebron James' high school games.

The 2000 election introduced several unprecedented elements. It was only the fourth election in U.S. history where the electoral vote winner lost the popular vote. The outcome remained uncertain for several weeks due to the Florida recount controversy.

Politics was entering a new era of razor thin margins, while basketball was moving toward clear consensus, with Lebron James emerging as the undisputed future of basketball, earning the "Chosen One" moniker while still in high school. He is that guy.

Very weird.
