The recent conflict between the Inquirer's Marcus Hayes and 76er player Joel Embiid was made possible the Inquirer's refusal to enforce basic standards in journalism. Hayes invoked Embiid's dead brother in order to criticize Embiid; this should not have been published.

The reason that traditional media continues to decline is that media organizations and their employees routinely cross the line when it comes to how they speak about the rest of us. At the same time, they hold each other blameless for their improper conduct.

The decline in newspaper readership doesn't merely owe to technological changes. It owes to mismanagement by those who now manage the news outlets and an abject failure to hold themselves accountable to basic standards of decency.
