View Full Version : Should the Magic have let Franz Wagner go instead of paying him max?

Assuming someone else is willing. Seems he's not improved much in his 4th year now. To me he's a below average 2nd option/good 3rd option. A 20-5-5 guy with meh efficiency. Jalen Suggs seems to be improving much faster and already surpass Wagner.

Well it's an obvious overpay relative to where hes at right now. But this is what teams do. If youre a top 2-3 player on a team at the time your contract is up, they wont even think about not maxing you. You ask for the max, they give it to you. No questions asked.

Hes got a lot of physical talent. If he ever stops brick laying with his three pointers he'll be a very dangerous player. Magic got their fingers crossed.

Speaking of the Magic, they just finished a 5-game road trip in which they not only lost every game, but failed to cover every game.

That's hard to do. Even without your best player. Bottom-feeder teams don't even do that.

Why can't teams just play hardball in negotiations? He would be a restricted free agent so they could match any offer. I don't get why teams are in such a hurry to max out guys. It's not like teams would be lining up to give him the max.

I don't know the specific story here but "guys want to be right." Ryan Clark quote. Orlando GM drafted him in the lottery. If he is a star (and he's statistically close to that kind of status) the people that brought him in look like they're good at their jobs. Maybe they could have saved some money with a tougher negotiation stance but they're 28th in payroll. And his contract isn't bad, he could easily be moved for a positive asset. 20+ ppg potential scorer for another decade. There are teams that wouldn't start him but everyone would want him. I won't say that giving him a full max would be a great move but if he was a free agent someone would probably do it.

He's played some of the best ball of his career recently. Holding down the fort with Paolo out.

Great bump he was also pretty cold to start the season so it's encouraging for when Paulo returns

He's quite easily playing the best ball of his career. Last 7 games he's at 29/6/6 on 47%, 36* from 3, and strong advanced numbers. Magic are 6-1 in that span.

He's an 85% free throw shooter, the 3's will start to drop. He's an all-around player at the most important position. You pay him that money.

He's a beast. The analytics/advanced statistics/adjusted on-off have always loved him.

I agree. He's got an incredibly low turnover rate too, so his offensive impact is greater than his scoring volume and efficiency suggest.

Franz Wagner is currently in my top 10. Hopefully he can continue this form when Banchero comes back.

Franz Wagner is currently in my top 10. Hopefully he can continue this form when Banchero comes back.

This issue with Banchero at the moment is that he seems to be a little bit too much of a ball-stopper at times. His scoring talent is undeniable but it's too Carmelo-esque.

Either way though, if Franz can continue hitting 3s then his impact will be huge.
