Jon Jones. 84 inch wingspan and one of the most unstoppable fighters in history.
Trying to learn to dunk with Al Horford.

I’m not saying he isn’t a great athlete I’m saying he definitely is. It’s just crazy how specialized the human body can be towards a specific kind of athleticism. It’s also obvious he never played basketball at all. He was a football player at one point and both of his brothers went to the NFL. so he is definitely an explosive athlete. His body just isn’t wired for basketball and his mind obviously isn’t either.
he is exactly what he is and nothing else. I’m just amazed such a lanky athlete can grow up in America and apparently never try to jump on a basketball court before.

That/s why today's hoopers aren't materially more athletic than the 80's or 90's because those decades simply weren't wired to do eastbays, while the 60's and 70's weren't wired for gather-steps, so they looked less athletic

I think he had the athleticism to dunk, just not the technique. Give him a couple days to learn jump mechanics and he should be able to do a simple dunk.

Oh I’m 100% sure he could. He grabbed the rim when he tried to do it without the ball.

He just has zero training being on a basketball court. It’s like someone dropped an athletic alien onto a court. Being around the game all our lives probably makes the basic actions feel more natural than they are.
feels like jumping would be one of the most natural things you could do. But throw an athletic guy a ball who has never played and it’s a travesty.
I wonder what those late bloomers like some of the Africans they find look like on day one.
Hakeem straight off of soccer field or handball court(field?) probably looked pretty awkward, but nothing like that.
It’s like you have to build the basic movements into him from scratch.
he just walked up and tried to one step vertical a dunk when it looks like he has never been handed a basketball.
I almost can’t get my head around the kind of childhood you would have to lead in America in a tremendously athletic family to either have never tried to get on a court or tried so few times you don’t know how to run and jump.
Hes from just outside of New York City.
I…don’t know how he got that way. People who don’t play basketball still know how to run and jump.

Pretty sure he was a Greco Roman wrestler in college. Completely different skill set. Odd thing about him is that he will sometimes try to beat his opponents at their own game, seemingly just to humiliate them.

Athleticism manifests itself differently in different sports. You're training the body to do completely different things.

High level basketball pros would look just as foolish as Jones did trying to dunk if they stepped in a ring or a cage.

video shows bad training by horford
jon's first jumps were off 2 feet and he was grabbing the rim pretty easy, so that's when you put a tennis ball in his hands and tell him to dunk that... Unfortunately, the big ball felt different and made him try a one-legged attempt, which drastically failed.. it actually wasn't that though bad considering no run-up - a lot of guys that don't get up anywhere near high enough won't even try to dunk it but jones was still going for the goal and following through.. he would easily be dunking in no time if he practiced.

The Gustafsson is a tough call. I don’t know too much about how MMA fight are scored to preface.
Gustafsson did win 3 of the 5 rounds but if it’s boxing terms the first one was 10-8 and the others were 10-9. John won 4 and 5 10-8 easily and absolutely dominated the last round. At the end of the day he did more damage and people forgetting what happened earlier was certainly a part of it. But idk he kind of won the fight.

Jon Jones could have trained his entire life working on his vertical and he still wouldn't have it. Maybe enough to barely dunk, I guess. Maybe.
Just because he's an incredibly intelligent and incredibly disciplined fighter doesn't mean he's overall athletic, because he isn't. lol.
LeBron James could have studied fighting his entire life and he'd still be jamming that shit home no problem.

Jon Jones has very, very skinny, anemic looking legs.
https://dmxg5wxfqgb4u.cloudfront.net/styles/inline/s3/2023-02/GettyImages-461004726.jpg
Plus, if he hasn't been playing basketball regularly coming into it, it's the equivalent of never having playing basketball at all.
You can't expect much of anything if a person has never jump on the regular in their life, or hasn't done so in years.
So it has less to do with the sport they're in and more to do with the absolute lack of training and conditioning.
I didn't play basketball for a couple of years, and I was amazed how my calf muscles felt as though they were about to explode after a couple of jumps. And I'm a person that's in very good shape and walk many miles a day.
Then after a few weeks of light training, gradually increasing the intensity, it's night and day.
So it's not shocking at all.

Mark Henry 6'3" 370 pounds. But he trains every part of his legs as much as everything else, for strength, at the highest of level. So they are very well conditioned.

if you can casually grab the rim while looking like you have barely attempted to jump in your life, I think that’s pretty far from somebody who could train their entire lives and barely be able to get it done.

Having skinny legs doesn't mean you can't jump or be super athletic. Guys like allen Iverson, and tmac had stick figure legs and could jump out the gym. A lot of skinny black guys with pogo sticks for legs getting up there. Jones just doesn't train in a sport that uses jumping.

In my experience with incredible athletes I’m always surprised how many things they are good at at the same time. I’ve known pro athletes and collegiate guys who seem to just be good at everything. Knew a guy who was a college football player and was immediately great at everything athletic he tried to do. He could play baseball. Had NBA three-point range. threw the most beautiful deep ball. Took a couple practice swings at topgolf and immediately looked like Tiger Woods. He could pick up video games he never played and beat everybody within five minutes. Just wild hand coordination.
And he isn’t the only one. Some people just seem built to perform athletic feats.
Jon Jones clearly is not one of them. He might just be incredibly dedicated to his one thing while not being a well rounded natural.
But having multiple nfl family members?
I don’t know. It just feels wrong how uncoordinated he looks.

He looks like he legit never played basketball ever. If that is the case then it could be understandable. Absolutely zero practice so you have no muscle memory at all.
It’s like if you see someone try to play golf for the very first time with no instructions or anything. Even if they are a coordinated and athletic person they will probably look ridiculous.

Unrelated but…did you know Jalen is only the second person named Jalen on record? The first is a couple years older than him but their mothers did the same thing. Combined two peoples names into one. Rose getting famous is the reason the name became somewhat common. There are like 10 Jalen’s in sports now. Several directly named after him.

Not sure what the parallel is here.
Mike Tyson was 5-10 and would beat any NBA player in a fight due to his unreal genetics in terms of speed, coordination, punching power etc.
He's probably a better athlete in most traditional measures (speed, stamina, strength, coordination) etc. than any NBA athlete.
Ask him to dunk? Probably looks just as awkward.
Basketball is a sport tilted toward size, not just athleticism.

That's not the same thing. I know loads of guys who have never thrown a baseball and throwing punches requires specialist training that you seek out rather than falling in your lap.
It looks like that's the first time he's ever attempted a J in that video. I just can't comprehend how/where he grew up where he didnt play ball at any point.

In my circle of friends…I’d be surprised if any ever played a game of baseball. Basketball isn’t generally as easy to avoid. I’m not sure a baseball has been in my hand since the 90s. America in modern times at least….baseball is almost non existent in casual settings. I’ve legit never seen a kid play baseball outside an organized school situation which is where I last played. Baseball is easy as hell to avoid in America. Basketball not so much. But even if you had….youd figure he could naturally jump a little better. The awkwardness is just weird.

Bit of a piece of shit. But you give him an activity that requires hand eye coordination? He wins.
