View Full Version : The most “You know gotdamn well this isn’t gonna work…” team of all time?

Counting only teams that weren’t openly shedding talent to tank. I’m talking about teams that are brought together by people intending to win something. Are the 06 Knicks the most obviously flawed in history?

I will let that list of names speak for itself, but I will also add this….
They had a salary of 126 million against a cap of 53 million. That’s the current equivalent of having about $335 million in salary. And to put that in context, only two teams even have a $200 million salary right now and they are both comfortable playoff teams.
Does anyone have a better example of hopelessness? Has any fan base ever been subjected to a more hopeless combination of names and salary than that team?
Has there ever been a lineup that was not attempting to lose that was more certain to fail?

I think they fired Larry Brown and Isiah just took the job himself Like pop did on the Spurs. Only he didn’t have Tim Duncan coming in.

What's funny is for a brief second that same Knicks core looked like they were on their way to making the playoffs. In '07 they managed to reach the 8th seed towards the end of the year, and I somehow still remember this buzzer beater from 17 years ago that not only put them in potential playoff position, but got Isiah Thomas a contract extension as well.

Of course they proceeded to go 4-15 the rest of the year and ended up missing the playoffs by 7 games.

I was living in upstate new york at that time and I remember watching those Knicks on MSG Network.
It was like a continuous comedic soap opera. They were like if Shaqtin A Fool sponsored an entire team.
The crazy thing is how packed and raucous MSG still got for every single game despite a squad like that typically deflating a fanbase with their constant losing and shenanigans. Knick fans ride thru thick and thin.

One of my favorite gifs I ever made was from around that time. I think they played on TNT and the closing credits were coming up and it was Nate Robinson dancing and flexing all crazy for the camera just as the final score showed and the Pacers had blown them out. it was so much comedy rolled into like five seconds and I can’t find it anywhere.

That Knicks team was the first one that came to mind.
Also Dallas when they got Antoine Walker and Antawn Jamison.

The team I thought of was the Iverson/Webber Pistons.

That actually sounds funner than watching a normal game. So many knuckle heads on one team... like going to the circus.
I used to watch them on MSG too. Frazier announcing the games with all his silly rhymes and sayings made it even better. :lol

S A quote about getting to that Knicks team, and knowing within five minutes, there were no wins to be had. He described it like the end of Goodfellas, when everybody is snitching and betraying each other and driving around, looking for helicopters following them.
That team might top the list of teams. I wish had a deep embedded reporter to follow them around and make a one season documentary. Marbury, Francis, Crawford, and Nate Robinson in One back court and then they had Eddy curry and later traded for Zach Randolph.
You could’ve let that team play with two basketballs and somebody would’ve still been calling for another one.

Jimmy Butler with KAT and Andrew Wiggins in Minnesota. You could see how different the personalities of these players were. Also, Rondo and Cousins in the same team with George Karl as a coach. And I also remember the New Orleans Pelicans having Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins and sorrounding them with Rondo and Tyreke Evans (not known from being outside shooters) instead of 3-point specialists.

This was also weird, they would be an incredible team in their prime, however, Nash was 39, Artest 35 or so, Gasol was also in his mid-30s. And then they signed Antawn Jamison who was almost retired. All the players were past their best years.

I remember actually thinking that Wolves squad was a potential team of the future lol, 3 stars under 30, 2 of them just 22 years old, both #1 picks.
They ended up lasting just one season together.
