View Full Version : What's the worst possible lineup you could make with All Time Greats?

We always see people posting their all time starting 5, and who works with who and all that jazz.
But what about who could make the worst lineup? Players that don't fit due to spacing, redundancy or anything else.
It would be too easy to just use all NBA players, so what about using players in the NBA Top 75... or even some other all time greats that may not have made the list.
Obviously these teams would still be decent do to the fact that there's all time greats on the team, but which lineup would be a "grind it out because this team is built awful" type lineup?

PG: Cousy
SG: Iverson
SF: Melo
PF: Barkley
C: George Mikan
I picked this team figuring the defense would be terrible. I am making the slightly unsafe assumption that Mikan would be considered an average or worse athlete by today's standards. Inever watched him of course. The spacing wouldn't be great either.

The actual skill of this thread would be to pick great players that dont match well, not to just pick flawed players.
Its an IQ thing.

Magic
Kobe
Erving
Giannis
Moses
This is not the worst of the teams listed here, but its the most improbable fit of players used in their respective tier.
basically:
Using only top 25 caliber players
Magic
Wade
Dr. J
Giannis
Moses

C George Mikan
PF Dolph Schayes
SF Paul Arizin
SG Bill Sharman
PG Bob Cousy
They might not even beat the average high school team today.

Magic would be one of the last players from the top 10 I would pick for a worst lineup. Fat PF Earv was still doing his thing when he came back in 95. Forget shooting because he everything else he brings solves a lot of the other issues.
Need a monster post scorer? Check
Need an elite passer into the post? Check
Need the court vision that produces easy buckets on the break and in the halfcourt? Check
What are his weaknesses? Man defense and shooting? Wade and Giannis would be terrorizing as help defenders and shooting you just gotta live with the any given sunday possibility of getting bombed out of the building some night.
If I have to have a t10 guy I am picking Shaq. Why? Because I have to fit the rest of the squad to get top10 MDE value out of him.
C: Shaq ...because I have to have someone from the t10
F: mailman... out of the Sloan, Stock and Malone it was pretty obvious he was going to be the least successful one outside of their ecosystem. The 3rd all time scorer is not portable.
F: Worthy... same as mailman but not as severe
G: Wade...
G: Glove... because i aint giving this team paul, kidd or stockton.

This team would win 65+ games.
Maybe a team with Ben Wallace, Jason Kidd, Wes Unseld, Jamal Wilkes and Bobby Jojes might not do well.

Lol. No chance they win 65+ games. No defense, and everyone fighting over the ball.

Kidd
Iverson
Dr J.
Barkley
Shaq
Prime Kidd wouldn't be able to shoot. Yes, great defender and floor general, but nobody on this team can reliably shoot from outside 15 feet* and that's what would be needed for Shaq to thrive.
*Yes Barkley was good from midrange, but his game was still more 20 ft and in.

Hardens Rockets didn't have any Defense and they've won 60+ games, don't see how all if them together won't. Plus, Mikan wasn't a bad defender. Prime Westbrook wasn't terrible. Pistol Pete and Harden, sure.

Considering this topic is mostly surrounding the concept of a team with a ton of MVP star power lacking chemistry and fit, anybody putting Magic Johnson as their PG already fumbled the rock.
Since there are far worse options @ point guard besides the most chemistry producing player perhaps of all time.
For me it would be:
PG: Westbrook
SG: Iverson (A.I. was a shooting guard, Eric Snow was the point)
SF: Melo
PF: Giannis
C: Ben Wallace
The offense would be beyond atrocious... no ball movement whatsoever. Iverson and Westbrook fighting each other for dribbling time while doing nothing off ball to help one another. Melo going into blackhole "I have to shoot and score" mode every time he catches the ball. Giannis not only getting a low dribble time of possession, but even when he does have the ball having 0 spacing to work with to play his game. And then Ben Wallace thrown in the mix to make the offensive capability even extra ugly and diminish all odds even further.

If you think Iverson was a "dribble dribble dribble" player you definitely haven't studied his game. He did a lot of his damage off ball coming off screens and working to get the ball with someone chasing him on the catch.
He wouldn't be fighting with anyone for "hold time" because that wasn't how he played in his best Philly years.

He still dribbled a ton. I even referenced he wasn't the point guard in my post. Eric Snow was. But he still was a ball hog.
Based on this thread alone, we can already see a Westbrook / Iverson backcourt would be one of the ugliest fits ever.
Reminicisnt of the 2004 USA Olympic basketball team that won Bronze featuring Marbury and Iverson jacking by far the most shots.
But Westbrook might be even a little bit more wild than Marbury.

The answer to this question would be find the five worst shooting, worst defending players.
PG - Westbrook
SG - Iverson
SF - James Worthy
PF - Barkley
Center is tough because almost everyone is going to provide defense. I'm going with Willis Reed.

Any team with Shaq is going to be a problem. He was transcendent in his peak. Add in a do it all guy like Pippen, that doesn't have the makings of a worse team. Hard to judge older players like Cousy, Bing and Sharman in these things based on today's game.
