The Athletic: "Williamson signed a five-year, $197 million contract extension with the Pelicans in 2022 that was to begin in the 2023-24 season, but the final three years of the contract are not guaranteed because Williamson only played in 29 games in 2022-23 — triggering a clause that gave New Orleans flexibility with him."

They would be insane not to waive him next summer. If it was just injuries then maybe you could make a case for honoring the contract, especially being an irrelevant franchise like the Pelicans.

But the fact that he is seemingly unable to control his weight, at 24 years old, which no doubt is a big reason for his lack of health, means he has to go. Ill conditioned, injury prone and with an attitude problem. That's the NBA get rid trifecta.

All of these guaranteed contracts need a minimum games clause (barring a legit injury and not load managing). 65 games, same as the amount to qualify for season awards.

Back when Zion was at duke, and I saw the angle of pronation in his knees…

… I told EVERYBODY :

“They better get a dunk contest or two out of him before his career is over and he porks up to 400lbs”

Two years from now he makes 42 million to Michael Porters 41. It’s way too small a contract not to find a taker if someone thinks they can keep him healthy for a year or two. NBA teams piss on 40 million these days. 40 million will make you the 35th highest paid player by then. KAT will be making 57 and 62 million those years.

You could trade him for a 6th man and change then way salaries go up. Matching the money will be nothing. You’d at least get some kinda compensation.
