a good team defense doesn't require the best players to be good defenders because there are many ways to skin a cat defensively... This why Bird and Curry had #1 defenses and are considered much better than Pippen despite being weak defenders..
This is also why individual defense isn't that important when comparing 2 great players.. Heck, a great offensive player allows GM's to surround him with cheap defenders to have a better defensive team, while a great defender requires expensive offensive help, thus weakening the team's defensive capacity.
Despite Pippen's presence, Jordan still had less defensive help than his peers by virtue of zero rim protection in a big man league, and lower defensive ranking than every ECF and Finals opponent during the 1st three-peat.. In addition to having worse defenses than ECF and Finals opponents, the 92' Knicks took the Bulls 7 games in the 2nd Round and they also had a better defense (#2 in the league).
Ultimately, people feel compelled to praise Pippen because of his ring count, but he barely ranks in the top 200 offensively, so they overrate his defense.. They also overrate individual defense in general when comparing good players.. This overrating of defensive impact is why Pippen is so overrated, while along with benefitting from the winning spotlight more than anyone in history - Pippen played at a Larry Nance level but the winning spotlight inflated him to all-time status and media accolade.
Having three all-defensive second team honors make larry bird a 'weak' defender?
Dumb.

he was considered a sub-par defender by 86', which is when the Celtics had the #1 defense in the league.
Unlike team offense where the best players must be good offensive players, a good team defense doesn't require the best players to be good defenders because there are many ways to skin a cat defensively... This why Bird, Curry, Luka, Jokic and Barkley are considered much better than Pippen despite being weak defenders..

You have probably done more than all the media outlets combined to boost the opinion of Scottie Pippen as a player and legend. All your whack arguments just make people uncover even more things to his credit. You should have been satisfied with everyone else just thinking he's the best sidekick ever, because now thanks to you we all understand he was even greater than that.

My arguments get better and more accurate with time..
So the next time someone says "b-b-but defense" regarding Pippen, I can refute it by pointing out how a good team offense requires the best players on the team to be good offensively, but a good defense doesn't and can be achieved in many ways.. It doesn't matter if Jokic, Curry or Bird aren't good defenders because the team can still play great defense and even have the #1 defense..
For the 90's Bulls, Pippen's presence didn't give them an advantage over opponents because the Bulls had worse defenses than every ECF and Finals opponent during the 1st three-peat... They made up for their lack of rim protection with MJ and Pippen on the perimeter, but it wasn't enough to combat the superior defensive rosters and frontcourts that other teams had and in a big man league/era... All of this proves that Pippen is overrated, since the only thing people can compliment his game on is defense, which isn't important for the best players on the team to have.

Team defense is definitely the most important aspect but individual defense is very important as well. If you don't have guys that can matchup to the other teams best players it's going to be a long playoff series.
Individual defense without high level team defensive concepts is not worth much. Neither is great team defensive concepts with weak individual defenders.
It all goes together
