Sure, it’s funny, but it got me thinking while I was reading some of the commentary when he first put it out there. Kobe would talk about how he was always so confident he could beat the first guy that all his moves were designed to allow him to score on the help. He wasn’t working on ways to score 1 on 1 because he didn’t get defended by players he got defended by teams.
of course it starts one on one but you can see how somebody as meticulous as he is would try to Account for the presence of help. So while it’s an exaggeration, I do believe him. He talked about it in one of those deep dive sit down. I’ll see if I can find it a bit later.
Doug Collins used to talk about that covering Allen Iverson. How it’s easier to rebound his misses because It’s usually four on three boxing out.
things like that are the advanced stats that I’m still hoping for. I don’t need the numbers that are just combinations of other numbers. I would like to see rebound percentage By shooter. I’m sure the NBA can track it, but I don’t know if it is its own statistic anywhere.

I’d start here: https://www.pbpstats.com/
Gasol and Odom did feast on the offensive glass.
Artest got a series winning put back on a Kobe brick in 2010.
I don’t doubt this.
But I’d just prefer a guy who can just give them unlimited shots in the lane like Nash over a pretty brick chucker who occasionally dimes them.
But I will take this time to say, Kobe did cause a type of chaos with a live dribble that other guys like Iverson, Carmelo, and even efficient guys like Durant didn’t.
If you can genuinely make any shot and maneuver while under control to any spot on the floor, you are a nightmare. Peak Kawhi was an athletically roided version of this in the playoffs. Even Durant’s “bag” and ball handling was too limited to really cause the panic of a Kobe triple threat for a defense.

Kobe bricks were in fact very clutch, they led to
Horry's GW against the Kings that completely swung the series
Gasol's series winner against OKC
Artest's GW against the Suns that completely swung the series

Westbrook's bigs always feasted on the offensive boards because of his relentless attacks to the basket drawing defensive attention in the paint.

damn bledsoe really had a good season then he dissapeared, had to look him up and he hasn't been in the NBA for a minute

Through those crucial misses, it seems like that's how kobe would inadvertently elevate his teammates while they're on the floor at the same time. A bit unusual and indirect too. His stans tho would brag that at least he did try making those shots instead of deferring to somebody else.

Of course it was calculated. Look at how many of those misses led to clutch baskets for his teammates because they had the size & numbers to get the rebound. Kobe also had a very high assist rate in crunch time in the POs with a low TO rate. He was a lot better in crunch time in the POs than the detractors that just used pure FG% gave him credit for.

I very highly doubt it was calculated just a happy coincidence. Kobe took tough shots because he worked at it. I don’t think missing entered his mind.

It doesn't matter if he meant to miss or not really. When you can draw 3+ defenders to the outside jumping out their shoes @ you away from the basket, there's a very high probability of getting the offensive board even if it does miss. And then it's an easy layup or a Horry style tap out wide open 3pt shot. So it can potentially work out in three ways on one possession.

No one on is ISH is that creative :lol It was Skip payless.
The Kobe assist is a thing, you draw an extra defender when you drive to the basket and shaq was alone for the putback dunk or gasol. With Westbrook it was adams.

Kobe was 5-22 in go-ahead shots during the last 10 seconds of the game.

Aside from just a couple exceptions, virtually anybody who played at least two years with Kobe, played their best ball with Kobe.

It played to his strengths to run out lineups with Pau/Bynum and either Odom or Artest, because they could flex a size advantage on the offensive boards as well. "Kobe Assists"
