The three-pointer will never go away, so I think that isn’t worth talking about anymore. But the NBA steel tries to make a little adjustments for the sake of the game being entertaining and free flowing. They usually adjust the defense to give the offense in advantage. At least in the last 20 years. I think they could throw a bone to defenders and make the game prettier at the same time.
I think things have gone far enough. It’s time for an NBA level five second closely guarded rule.
You can’t pretty up the game by reducing threes but you can get rid of this

They are definitely worse abusers but I mislabeled many of my old Harden clips so I can’t find them. This one was readily available.
fundamentally, I understand why offenses built on driving and kicking would have a few plays like that when they stumble. If you get stonewalled, all you can do is keep going at it or throw it to somebody else and hope they have time to not be stonewalled. It’s that or a ridiculous pull-up and sometimes it’s both.
In my ideal world, NBA offenses would still run enough sets so it doesn’t come down to that. But I’ve given up on that.
I think this rule which was designed to promote ball movement on the lower levels and prevent stalling, would at least force the NBA away from plays likely to result in a risky long ass ISO Wow, also giving the great players room to attack.
It’s no more drastic change than the five second back down. It doesn’t prevent any particular moves being done. It doesn’t stop guys like Harden or Luka from Breaking people down, they just have to do it or give the ball up Without getting to reset and dribble for 6 more seconds.
I could even see a loophole where it doesn’t apply for the final 59 seconds of the fourth quarter and all overtime’s to allow teams to kill the clock before attempting a game winner if they want
would that be too great to concession to the defense to you?
I don’t see how we could do anything but make the game prettier. But I can see pushback from people who watch games specifically to see isolation play.
I think it’s about as drastically move as we likely to see from here on out. The NBA has just about fine tuned itself for the offense it wants. They never fully allow the old physical defenses, but this would be a fair compromise in my eyes.
FIBA I believe has always had it. It’s pretty widespread outside the NBA So it’s not like it would be a foreign concept to the players.
take him or pass the goddamn ball. Does anyone really have a problem with that?
