I suspect many athletes either don’t drink at all or heavily limit it. I’ve honestly never understood why people consider it difficult. I see discussions, asking what people who don’t drink or do drugs due to cope with the stress of life and so many people respond like life would be terrible and I just don’t understand it.
And for the record, there is a tremendous amount of alcohol in my house. The fridge in my sunroom exists only for alcohol. I don’t drink much of it but it’s always there in case I have people over.
I’ve not been truly drunk in years and even when I am, I wouldn’t say it does much to relieve stress. I’m sure affects some people differently though.
If I thought it might hinder athletic performance and that was my livelihood I don’t think I’d have a problem giving it up for 10-15 years outside the situation he mentioned.

a lot of it is cultural too. i notice blacks don't drink as much as say mexicans or irish people. i bet you can pop into any construction jobsite in the southwest and there's an 80% chance one of the mexicans will have beer in their cooler. i see beer on towers being built in central phoenix more often than i'd like to. makes you wonder who's loaded while using heavy equipment. or if they're just drinking a couple at lunch.
i can say the same as you have said but for weed. i don't care for it much other than a blunt every other month or so. but i've met a lot of black people that can't live without it. i hooked up with a white girl that lived her life around pot, it was weird. seems like weedheads don't drink a lot.

i could tell you of the hundreds of beer runs i've made in the US or Mexico, we always buy a ridiculous amount of booze and somehow it's still not enough. we'll end up having to return at 11pm for another and then around 1:30 just before they stop selling it for a 3rd run.

I Some of that. I usually assume they do big family gatherings. I’ve had runs where I would consistently have so many people in my house we would go through shocking amount of alcohol. Their times I’ve drank about 50 beers with a friend of mine watching football. My mom approached me as if I had a problem when she noticed how much alcohol always had around.
I had to explain that alcoholics don’t have 30 mostly full bottles at all times. Alcoholics buy their bottle of choice or beers of choice and go through them like water.
I have options not a problem. I’ve had the same 24ish beers in my fridge since they were left over from the Tyson “fight”.
Just doesn’t occur to me to drink outside social situations where everyone is doing the same.
I don’t imagine there’s too much drinking on the road in todays nba.

There have been many old timers who drank themselves to early grave throughout all sports. Nowadays it seems drinking has calmed down. But back in the day drinking and smoking cigarettes was huge.
