One of my favorite quotes even if not true. Listening to him talk, you knew he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Legend has it one time somebody quoted John 3:16 to Rickey Henderson and he said “Rickey don’t wanna hear about John hittin’ .316, Rickey’s hittin’ .330.”

I haven't heard that name in over 20 years. The last time was on sports radio, when someone mentioned how Ricky had trouble remembering the names of some teammates or something like that.

I just read that he told John Oulerud, who wore a helmet due to some pass medical condition, that he knew a guy who wore a helmet all the time, only to be told that John Oulerud was that other guy.

When with the Mets, the hitting coach was fired, and when a reporter asked him about it, he was like "Who's that?" And needed to be told that it was his hitting coach.

His focus was game preparation, I guess.

Reminds me just a little of Jasper.

RIP. He was one of my favorite baseball players, and the '89 A's were probably the most fun team to watch in my lifetime.
