The people that were complaining about Penny's acquittal wont be even 50% as bothered about a woman being burned alive on the subway. This will just be a distant memory in a few weeks time.

The idea that you should be unceasingly tolerant of anti social/criminal behavior is flawed because it assumes that bad actors have good boundaries and respect for other people. Also that situations can't and won't escalate. A man screaming in a woman's face could easily evolve into something more deadly.

Predictably someone asking on Twitter saying "I just don't get it, why did no-one do anything about it?".

Just last week people were saying "if you see a crazy person on the subway just avoid eye contact and ignore them", now its "why don't people intervene?".

It's pretty obvious, based on the way these things are policed and the culture of the city the risks of intervening outweigh the rewards. There is basically no upside in intervening because in the event anything goes wrong you will be thrown under the bus.

you can detain and deport. not saying not to. but using it as an excuse to hand out ridiculous amounts of money to build new detention centers because you spent years fear mongering that they are overrunning the country (they're not) to divert money from ICE and other federal agencies is straight up fraud. yes, Trump diverted money from ICE to give his friends $100 million dollars for a new detention center back in 2017. Not to mention the conditions of private prisons are worse. they're more expensive yet the conditions for inmates are worse, assaults are more likely as well...where's all the money going?

Many of these same Democrats who kept their mouths shut when Obama was building massive family detention centers?
