View Full Version : Is a rectangle really just an elongated square?

Why are they considered two different shapes? They have the same number of sides, so why the difference? I called my Dad in the middle of the night last night to ask him that, but he didn’t have much to say about it. But yeah, I don’t see the need for two different designations of the same shape.

They aren't 2 different shapes, a square IS a rectangle :facepalm

The term "square" just signifies it has 4 equal sides.

This is a low-IQ thread even coming from you and I can't tell if you've had a stroke or something.

So you’re agreeing with me. They’re not two different shapes. You see, this is what I’m talking about. We’ve been falsely taught this since we were infants and here we are talking about things that have no basis in reality, like the existence of a different shape apart from a square or vice versa.

We were not taught they are two different things, you just weren't listening in math class.

A square is just a type of rectangle.

Just like there are three different types of triangles.

This is literally elementary.

Hmm I’m not sure you’re making sense here. I know it can get confusing cause of all the false things they taught us back in school. There are different triangles, sure, but they’re still called triangles at the end of the day. A rectangle is a completely different term for what is still a square. It’s just a little bit elongated is all. And this is where the confusion lies. I think schools should definitely begin to correct this falsehood immediately.

Coming into this thread I very much agreed with Chewing.

Its nice to see there are folks of knowledge here such as Off the Court willing to educate us a bit.

Makes a lot of sense what he said!
