View Full Version : Is there any guy in NBA history you'd still take as a starter if he never score?

Except for free throws, if he attempt to score even 1 basket then he'll die. Otherwise he can do everything else, dribble, pass, etc.
Anyone in history worth this?

Only ones that come to mind are guys like Russell, Rodman, and Wallace. But even then I'm not completely sold that a guy that won't even attempt to score is worth the strain that would put on the halfcourt offense unless he was a savant in every other faucet.

You could make a case for Stockton. But the whole concept would be weird if you're assuming eventually guys would never guard him.
The big defenders mentioned above are the first to come to mind, but some of the other bigs, like Wilt, still have major impact just being in the way. Maybe elite passing bigs like Jokic, or Walton, who was also a world class defender and rebounder, you could make a case for.
Abstract concept.

Yea the crux of this would be that said player literally can't score. Once the defense catches on then he just wouldn't be guarded at all, which would render any passing skills pretty much moot. Dribbling ability wouldn't matter if you aren't being guarded.
I'd say it wouldn't be worth it.

To be serious though Dennis Rodman is probably the only player ever who could get away with this.

If you left him wide open in 1997 or 1998 even he would lay one in though. If that wasn't an option then things change.

And Ben Wallace, especially before Larry Brown became his head coach.

Nah, not Rodman. At best he's Raja Bell level ( according to OP).

Dennis Rodman, Bobby Jones, Steven Adams, Tony Allen, Mark Eaton...defense matters. John Stockton also stands out as he can give 10 asts and 2 steals a game does it really matter if your fifth option doesn't score?

Wait, do you really think Stockton-to-Malone works if you don't have to account for Stockton?

Seriously. You could just not guard Stockton at all and double Malone. Everyone else gets played straight up.
