View Full Version : AD on why he's never won DPOY "the league doesn't like me"

Anthony Davis thinks he should have won a Defensive Player of the Year award by now, and he's getting increasingly vocal about that fact. In April of 2024, the Lakers star grumbled that the league had a bias against him. "I'll never get [Defensive Player of the Year]," Davis said at the time. "They're not giving it to me. The league doesn't like me. I'm the best defensive player in the league. I can switch 1 through 5. I can guard the pick-and-roll the best in the league, from a big standpoint. I block shots. I rebound."
In December, he argued that he's not being judged on the same standard as others. "I think the goal post just moves sometimes," Davis told Melissa Rohlin of Fox Sports. "Some guys throughout the years have been awarded Defensive Player of the Year because they had the most blocks in a season. I've done that a couple of times and haven't gotten it. Or is it about team defense? Or is it about individual defense and what numbers do you have on the defensive end?"

AD doesn't get credit for his goat season in 2020, when he lifted a lottery team to champion while leading the team in scoring and turning the defense from worst to first - it's a GOAT season, but he gets no credit.. He dominated Jokic along the way and hit historic winners to carry his team to the Finals against an injured and easy East.

Missing games, leading crapptmy teams, too soft to play the 5. Sure the league is to blame :facepalm

It's his own fault for being a beta and meekly letting Lebron take all the credit for his carrying the team.

Hard to win DPOY when you're in street clothes on the bench for a bulk of the season.

Doesn't matter how many games he plays (he played 76 games last season) when the guys around him are mediocre defenders at best. We all know he's a DPOY-level defender and only a few players in the league right now are at his level in terms of ability & impact, but those other guys are going to get more credit for it when they're on better defensive teams.
And how is he too soft to play the 5? He's been playing almost 100% of his minutes the 5 for the past 3 seasons because the Lakers don't have another big man to pair him with.
He's versatile enough where you can pair him with a 5 and generally that helps their defense more because he's able to have more impact as a roamer & a perimeter defender while they're still able to protect the rim. He's one of the few big men in NBA history who can be switched onto a 1 and do as great of a job defending someone like Curry 1 on 1 as he does against a big.

He needed a season where his team had the best regular season record. Might have been able to do it in the past if he had some better defenders around him. Now that Wembanyama has gotten started I don't see how he ever get's one. Wemby does everything he does defensively except he covers even more ground and is even harder to shoot over.

He's right. Marcus Smart and JJJ have won it in the past couple years and aren't even close to as impactful as AD on defense.

Hes still crying about playing the 5 even though that is where he should be playing. Last uear he played a lot of games finally. Too bad he wasnt the best defender. Its not like every lakers game isnt on national tv for everyone to see

If a big doesn't want to play the 5, then it's tough to award the DPOY.

It's not about that. Voters look at stats and not just individual but team stats. Playing for a poor defensive team makes it almost impossible to win DPOY. Wemby should have won it last year but didn't because the Spurs sucked. I'm not saying AD deserves it right now but the mediocrity of some of his teams due to lack of talent definitely hurt his DPOY case. Prime AD should have won at least 1 within that 2015-2020 range. Now yeah he's probably lost a step athletically though he's still insanely good, but Wemby makes it hard for him win one now.

That's 1 player, he had plenty of good role guys on the team, you don't get to have a #1 ranked defense or even a top 10 with just 1 great defensive player and a bunch of turnstiles. That's where the Lakers pretty much are right now I'd say they have 3 above-average defenders on the whole roster.
