Lets say Mavs absolutely have to trade Luka because of...reasons. Is there a better realistic return than AD if they are in a short term (~3yrs) winning timeline?

Obviously nobody knows or ever will at this point.

Jokic or Giannis are the only two big men in the NBA they could've got that were better. So they did pretty good.

Or, they keep the 25 year old who is coming off a finals run and is considered a top 3 playoff performer in the world.
That'd have been a pretty good option for them if their goal is to win now. Keep the guy who is elite in the playoffs and wins.

The problem for Mavs is that they don't seem to be good at drafting and they are also not good at attracting free agents.
They had 5+ years to get some real help for Luka, but they blew it.
AD is a player they could never get in free agency and Cuban has always been obsessed with star centers such as Dwight, DAJ etc.
If Luka has told them he'd leave, I don't think it's the worst they could do. Now they also have an in with the Mafia aka Rich Paul, so they might be able to convince a third wheel to come along.

I don't know if they blew it or it's just Luka style.
Remember... he had Porzingis... who turned out to be monster talent. Couldn't make it work.
It's just hard to hero ball 1v5 your way through a gauntlet. Eventually the heroics run out and you lose to well oiled machine.

Yes, Luka has much of the blame, but Mavs should have considered that before getting Zingis. Ironically, AD would have been the perfect match with Luka.

Preposterous when you look at what all other stars got teams.
A 25 year old Luka should get you a superstar in both the 2020s and then one in the 2030s, with some future role players in draft picks to round it out.
Insanely stupid to give him up for a post-peak 32 year old injury-prone Anthony Davis.

Luka is literally more hurt than AD right now. If Luka was fresh, prime, locked in averaging his 30 point triple doubles I'd agree with you. But hes... not. Not even close. Dude looks like he didn't even come to play this season. He blew his load last year and Dallas sees it. They have way more inside information than us.

If the Mavs actually shopped Luka, they would have dozens of better offers.
The only players you would consider trading Luka for:
Jokic
Shai
Giannis
Wemby
ADELSON’s clearly got bribed with some combo of guaranteed Vegas franchise ownership, long term sportsbook revenue, a piece of the 2028 LA/Palisades Olympic complex build/ownership.

Chet, J-Dub, other players plus picks?
I don't know. I feel you could get get more.
Trading for AD is a win now move. But if they wanted to trade for the future, they could've got more.

Are those players realistic though? I don't think any of their teams will accept. Big mayyybe on Giannis but Luka won't resign with Milwaukee so that's not happening either.

Giannis for Luka would be a terrible trade for Milwaukee. It would improve Dallas, but Milwaukee gets a lot worse.
