View Full Version : Curry: I don't want GS to be the Lakers the last 3 years with Kobe

“Competitive,” Curry emphasized last week. “I’ve seen different scenarios. Like everybody talks about Kobe [Bryant] and his last years. From my vantage point, I’m comparing it to guys that only played for one franchise. Dirk [Nowitzki], Tim [Duncan], Kobe, from our era. … You don’t want to be in a situation the Lakers were in those last three years [with Bryant]. I know he came off the Achilles injury, but it was, like, they were a lottery team, and it was more just how many points can Kobe score down the stretch of his career. I don’t want to be in that scenario.
“My whole thing is, you have to be realistic. There’s probably not a move or a scenario where you’re gonna walk into a season or a playoff series as the perennial favorite. There’s just a lot of talent around the league. But to be competitive, where you have a chance — that’s what we want to see. I’m sure that’s what our fans want to see. Playing meaningful games, no matter how it ends. I think that’s what we deserve, and I hope that is the reality I get to live in this last part of my career.”
“That’s the gas in the tank of why personally I want to only play for only one franchise and have made that a goal,” Curry said. “And why all my actions are kind of pointed toward that.”

I don't think it hurts your legacy if you want to play for a contender your last couple seasons and you get traded. No one thinks of Hakeem or Ewing for time with Toronto or Orlando.
Curry should definitely consider joining a contender if this Warriors team doesn't make the conference finals.

No, but going to another team to win as the 2nd/3rd player isn't really going to enhance it much either. There's already enough people who asterisk the 2017 and 2018 rings with KD. It sounds like he wants to go out with some dignity and for him, keeping the team competitive organically and not ring-chase is his MO. I mean, Hakeem going to the Raptors in 2001 wasn't going to a contender, if he wanted a guaranteed ring on the way out he'd have gone to the Lakers to back up Shaq. Ditto for Ewing....

Dirk's last 3 seasons Dallas was pretty bad despite him taking a paycut.

It's all luck. Curry can do what he does right now for the next 3-4 years if he doesn't have a major injury. Warriors don't really have any assets aside from Kuminga and Butler, and Jimmy's value is basically tied to Phoenix because the Suns would be dumb enough to move Durant for him. If Steph tore his achilles his career would basically be over too and he'd be forced into playing sub-par basketball on a rebuilding GS squad as well if he chose to continue.

Curry wants to have a Duncan-type ending which is ideal (crazy to think how elite the Spurs were in Duncan's last 5 years 2011-2016).
His FO literally just got him Jimmy Butler which is far better than anything Kobe had 2014-2016, so idk what he is complaining about. Ever since the Warriors got rid of Monta Ellis in 2012, Curry has had fantasic talent around him.
