Looking back I think I thought Karl Malone should have been the MVP over Jordan in 1998. Both Michael Jordan and Karl Malone were 34. In 1998 Malone averaged 27.0/10.3/3.9/1.2/0.9 on 53% shooting in 37.4 minutes per game. Michael Jordan in Comparison averaged 28.7/5.8/3.5/1.7/0.5 on 46% shooting on 38.8 minutes per game. Both Teams record was 62-20. The Bulls had a better roster than the Jazz.
On the advanced side of things. Malone led the League in VORP(6.9), OBPM(5.7), WS(16.4), OWS(12.1). They probably gave the MVP award to Karl Malone in 1999 to compensate for him losing the MVP Award in 1998

MJ was the best player/winner in the league. He proved it not only by leading his team to 62 wins when his best teammate missed 38 games but he also beat Karl Malone's Jazz in the Finals without homecourt in 6 games. Again.

Pippen missed 38 games and the Bulls still went 26-12 with a +5.9 SRS.
Having said that, I still think the 1997 and 1998 MVP's may have gotten mixed up. Jordan in 1997 and then Malone in 1998 would have made more sense. Malone in 1998 had a better regular season individually than MJ.
