View Full Version : Is it odd that Jokic has never been in the running for MIP?

I was thinking the other day: How does a guy who was drafted 41st become a 3-time MVP without being in MIP discussions along the way? Despite minutes played, games played and injuries not being involved.

Meanwhile, I remember Giannis was in MIP talks every year on his come up. Even winning it in 2019 when he made the leap from borderline all-star to all-NBA 2nd team. Meanwhile Jokic made a similar leap instead making all-NBA 1st team but didn't even get a vote?

I think this might be one of those cases where that's the 1 year Jokic should've won but no one's going to vote for an all-NBA 1st teamer for MIP. If Bol Bol becomes all-NBA 1st team next year he probably won't get a vote either. "He's too good for the award".

If Bol Bol becomes a dominant player I guarantee he’d win the award lol.

Then how does Jokic go from a non all-star to all-NBA 1st team and get 0 votes. is that not odd?

You might be right about Bol Bol considering he's been in the league a while and hasn't shown any signs of making that leap. But if a guy like Banchero became the best player in the world next year and won MVP we would all be like wow he improved a ton but I doubt he'd get serious MIP consideration. Lots of high draft picks make huge leaps in years 2-4 and don't get consideration because many consider it merely a consequence of increased playing time and usage as opposed to any actual improvements made.

His per-minute numbers were insane off the bat. Give his coaching staff most improved for recognizing the level of talent they were wasting.

He did finish runner up MIP in 2017, but I agree with OP it is weird he didn't get a single vote after he became the MVP/BITW. Even Steph finished 4th in MIP after already winning MVP in 2016.

He averaged 18.5/10.7/6.1 as a “non all star” and then 20.1/10.8/7.3 the next year lol. And his efficiency was better in the year he didn’t make the ASG. just because people realized how good he was and gave him an arbitrary selection does not mean he improved significantly at that point of time.

Meanwhile Bol Bol is a second stringer at best. If he were to become an all nba first teamer it would be a gargantuan leap.

You're right. But I went to check on bbref and he didn't have it on his page. In the actual awards page for that year he's 2nd. I thought they would list anyone who ranks in top 10 for any award on the player page. I guess they don't list non 1st placements for MIP the same way they do the ROY or DPOY.
