NEW YORK -- The NBA will not bring back its All-Star Game mini-tournament next season.

Commissioner Adam Silver said Thursday that the format used last month - a four-team tournament made up of 24 NBA All-Stars and another team of rookies and sophomores, all playing to a target score of 40 points - "was a miss."

The game is shifting to NBC next season as part of the league's new broadcast deal, and Silver said the league and the network are talking about what may work. The league tried something new this season with hopes of sparking some competitiveness, which the game has lacked for years.

"We're back to the drawing board," Silver said.

What a loss for the sport :( You'll be missed tournament I literally never heard of.

The best thing the league can do is have a USA vs. international game, that would be the most interesting and would provide the players with the most motivation.

I like how Silver says back to the drawing board. Like it's some damn rocket science equation.

* Bring back East vs West

* Winner gets HCA in Finals

* Bring back the Shooting Stars competition (1 NBA player, 1 WNBA player, 1 retired NBA player or current NBA rookie)

Home court in the Finals goes too fast. The players still may not care (too many are in non-contenders, know they could get traded or even want to be traded) and then the problem with players not caring about the ASG gets to infect the Finals. Limit the contamination.

The effort overall was poor but a few of the players cared (yes, in talking about Tatum and Brown). The energy wasn't bad until they had the stupid retirement ceremony. Their generation may lead a rebirth. If not it will continue to stick. Either way it cool me down to getting players to care about something that doesn't matter. The NFL did end up gratin ng rid of theirs. Same could happen to NBA.
