The story of how basketball was created is a great one, mainly because of how spontaneous it was.
The original version of the game was brutal. Today's players would not be able to handle the raw physicality. In just the very first game, one boy was knocked out, several ended up with black eyes, and one even dislocated his shoulder.

Sometimes it feels as if basketball began with the NBA, but in reality, the game was already thriving well before the league was officially formed. I've seen footage from the 1930s showing thousands of fans packed into venues like Madison Square Garden, all there to watch games. So it was a compelling game, right from the beginning, destined for something bigger.
