PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia was sitting in his usual spot courtside back in January when he came to a startling yet unmistakable conclusion. He had a strong dislike for the high-priced basketball product his leadership had put on the court.
Sure, there were some talented players on the team like Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but there was no joy. There was no passion. There was no identity.
And he was the man responsible for it.
“Embarrassing season, right?” Ishbia said. “Disappointing. Awful. I watch every game like all you guys do and no one’s proud of it, no one’s happy with it, from me, to the front office, to the coaches and players, to the marketing executives to the security guards.
“It was a failure.”
Ishbia’s candid remarks came in a press conference on Thursday following arguably the most disappointing season in the franchise’s history, which dates to 1968. The Suns had a star-studded roster that included the All-Star trio of Durant, Booker and Beal, yet finished with a 36-46 record and missed the postseason.
Even more than the losing, Ishbia was most disappointed in the team’s effort. The Suns were one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA and often got blown out by the league’s elite.
“I want to put a team out there on the court that everyone is proud of,” Ishbia said. “It has to have an identity — an identity similar to Phoenix. Some grit, some determination, some work ethic, some grind, some joy. We just haven’t had that.”
Ishbia and the Suns have already made one big change, firing coach Mike Budenholzer (https://www.nba.com/news/suns-part-ways-coach-mike-budenholzer) just hours after Sunday’s season-ending loss to the Sacramento Kings. It figures to be one of several seismic changes for a team that has nosedived since Ishbia bought the franchise for roughly $4 billion (https://www.nba.com/news/mat-ishbia-agrees-to-buy-suns-mercury-for-4-billion) in 2023.
The confident 45-year-old admits he didn’t do a good job of setting the team’s on-court foundation two years ago, approving moves that sometimes seemed like the Suns were building a fantasy basketball team instead of one trying to win games in real life.
Ishbia was a 5-foot-10 walk-on at Michigan State in college, playing a minor role in helping the Spartans win the 2000 national championship. He said the lessons he learned under legendary Tom Izzo need to better translate to what he’s doing with the Suns.
“I’m no talent, all heart, that’s my life,” Ishbia said. “I will just outwork everyone. I’m going to have a coach, a front office and players that the Phoenix community will love.”
Now comes the hard part — actually making it happen.
Two of the Suns’ lead front office personnel — CEO Josh Bartelstein and general manager James Jones — were at Thursday’s press conference, suggesting they’ll have at least some sort of role with the franchise going forward. Ishbia has also been adamant that the Suns won’t be trading Booker, a four-time All-Star who has spent all 10 of his NBA seasons in the desert.
“He’s the franchise player, he’s done amazing things,” Ishbia said. “I speak with him and we’re very aligned with what we want to do. His mission and my mission are very similar — let’s bring a championship to Phoenix.”
Otherwise, anything seems possible.
The 36-year-old Durant is under contract for next season, but also represents the one valuable trade chip the Suns could deal. The 15-time All-Star just finished another phenomenal year, averaging 26.6 points, and would be an attractive addition for a contender.
The situation for the 31-year-old Beal is much different. The three-time All-Star has two more years on a contract that pays him more than $50 million annually, but his production last season didn’t come close to matching that salary. Unloading him figures to be tricky.
Before those decisions are made, the Suns have to find a coach, which will be their fourth in four seasons.
After two years of winning press conferences, Ishbia is ready to start winning games.
“We’ve got to get the next hire right,” Ishbia said. “And we will.”

Him playing for Izzo is noteworthy. Two important things when it comes to an owner, the willingness to spend and the ability to pick the right people to make the decisions for you. He definitely checks the first box. Having been with Tom Izzo and somehow becoming a billionaire at age 45 he had to have some level of basketball knowledge and intelligence even if he does likely come from money. So although the present is a colossal **** up in the distant future after this team is blown up I wouldn't be surprised to see them make some good teams there.

Its nice to see some sort of acknowledgment of his own failures. Although its weird that if he is this thoughtful/aware, that he would consider firing Budenholzer as not another one of those weird overreactionary moves.

Letting go of Paul was the blunder that started it all.

I agree with trying to hold on to Book. Hes the centerpiece and its good for the game when there are identities and constants.

Is Ishbia dumb enough to think this all being public helps him ?
Or helps the Phoenix Suns ?
Or that the players, coaches, or fans take his little gremlin self seriously ?

Son needs to sit down and shut the fkk up.
But just like the Mavs ownership and they minions, I predict Ishbia will just keep picking at the wound, making it worse and worse, and spreading the infection.

Booker is not the guy to lead a franchise man. They're gonna pay him 75 million a year and be mediocre because the guy making a 3rd of the cap is barely a top 15 player. Booker is still living off what he did in 2 Playoff rounds in 2023 but he's never going to be that guy IMO. If he was THAT guy we would've seen it this year because this was his moment to show up and carry the team with everything else going wrong (he played 75 games and they did worse than the fricking Mavs & Kings), and he's simply not on that level as an offensive player.

And 2021?

They did make the Finals but it was more about how good the team was overall, Booker was pretty pedestrian if you dive into his Playoff numbers in that Finals run with some exceptions of course, he had his moments, but he looked like peak Kobe/MJ in the 2023 Playoffs and hasn't been close since.

It's actually crazy when you think about it. He went from 1st team All-NBA and all a top 5 MVP candidate to not even being an All-Star within a few years and the guy's still in his 20s. We all expected him to do better this year but he's just not THAT guy. He's basically Tatum if Tatum wasn't on the Celtics. I'm sure I was high on him at some point but then he started to annoy tf out of me with the way he carried himself on the court. Still mad about that Lakers loss to the Suns when AD got hurt and Book was frontrunning against them, that was his best series in that 2021 Finals run I believe and they got so lucky with injuries that year.

I had in mind his 47 pter in Staples and figured he was goating but it wasnt anything like 2023.

Its funny how we/you perceive that as a meh run, when he was actually doing peak Kobe numbers in 2021.

Not 2023. Kobe never touched his 2023 run.

Books 2021 numbers are what prime Kobe did in the playoffs.

He wasn't. He had a 16 PER & a negative BPM for that Finals run & shot sub-40% in the WCF against an injured Clippers team. CP3 carried that team and I'm right on this because they weren't the same since he got injured and have been mediocre-garbage after trading him. He put up comparable numbers to Kobe in an era where it's much easier to do so but he's not the same caliber of player, same as Tatum now putting up similar scoring/efficiency numbers to some of Kobe's prime years but not being anywhere close offensively really. Neither can quite attack the rim and get to the foul line same way Kobe could and Kobe was better at making contested shots and a better defender and better at running the offense in his prime.

Mayhaps he should put someone else in charge of this failure, put some distance between his failz and the team.
