You'll hear NBA fans saying "Why is there so much flopping in the game today?"
The simple answer is- It WORKS.
2019-20 the NBA added a replay challenge. No ref wants to be seen as making a frivolous call. But if the ball-handler falls to the ground or does a Harden-esque whiplash acting as if they got jolted from the defender, it looks legit. No one has a measure of the actual impact.
The other thing some players do is yell when they think they get hit on a drive. Refs respond to this.
Jimmy Butler goes to the line a lot- he is known for yelling as he drives- and whether it's his vocal cadence or something else, the refs take that as a cue to blow the whistle.
