View Full Version : It's pretty amazing Tatum/Brown still have zero chemistry/two man game at this stage

After all these years together.
They play completely isolated from each other.
They dont run many actions besides basic occasional pick n roll, they dont find each other for lobs, they dont give and go, nobody comes off curls.
JB's one and only move is to get the ball and dart down to the low block and try to overpower a weaker defender, and Tatum's one move is to use his mid-tier iso game to hoist a long jumper over somebody.
These are supposed all-nba players who came in together and have 10 years experience playing with each other.
And they have like no observable relationship or connection on the court.
It's almost feels like dereliction of duty. Even tho they got a chip last year playing their take turn iso style, you wonder what the hell they even do during training camps, or practices. The team itself really has no schemes, no actions. They all just take turns bombing.
It won last year and it might win this year. But it's weird they havent even BOTHERED to practice anything else basketball wise. They honestly play like theyve never held a team practice. And yet talent is getting them by.

Aside from Tatum underperforming in the Finals, the Celtics' system allows everyone to play to capacity - there's no one playing poorly - everyone is generally getting theirs.
So Tatum and Brown might not have great chemistry, but the team has figured out the chemistry so that everyone is achieving their max stats - it was impressive when Porzingas averaged 20 ppg as third option last year and then set the tone by dominating Game 1 of the Finals.. This demonstrates team chemistry...
Imagine of Love or Bosh had the capacity to dominate in the Heat's system, but unfortunately LeSystem turned them into spot-up shooter.. It would've been ideal for Bosh to step up in the 14' Finals to make up for Wade, but Bosh's capacity to step up had been robbed by being a spot-up shooter.

If they don't win this year, I could see one of them leaving, probably Brown who will then go to somewhere like Heat and look great in the regular season, get MVP talks and then lose in the first round.

Actually Shams was on some program just recently saying he expects the Celtics to make financially motivated changes this offseason, win or lose. He didnt say who or how, just that it's his expectation based on all the various factors involved.
Gotta admit I'm pretty curious to see exactly what they do in that regard.

Dr Browns IQ is way too high.
Tatum kiddos IQ is way too low.
how can they even think of developing chemistry between them.
Its by chance that they ended up next to Harvard and MIT.

It's gonna happen for sure. Tatum is Celtics in the eyes of fans and can do more if Brown isn't there. Brown thinks he's the best, but probably isn't a superstar. They'll break it up if they go out against Knicks for sure.

This might be hating but realistically is there a more boring team than the Celtics? The only guy who I would want to root for is Jrue Holiday. Rest of their tream is lame.

Pretty sure they have to cut salary just because they're going to be in the 2nd apron otherwise. I think they're going to keep their core but trade either Jrue or KP. Both of them are making 30+ million a year and Jrue is old and KP misses 30+ games a year. Porzingis would be the easier trade because teams want size and he only has 1 year on his deal.

Trade Brown for Giannis. The money works.
Then find a way to move Holiday for financial reasons, although it will probably be Porzingis unfortunately.

Yea it is odd how they have no feel for playing with each other. Like two spam robots. Brown hunting mismatch with bully ball and Tatum rainbow brick 3.

One part of the problem is that it is easy for the defense to switch if they run a pick and roll with each other. That is tougher to do with players of very different sizes.

No doubt. But even beyond a direct offensive connection, youd still expect some kind of sympatico. Lebron and Luka had a connection right away, actually Lebron and AR also had a very intuitive connection despite having similar ball handling roles. Even in Dallas with Luka and Kyrie, they werent involved in the same action most of the time but they clearly had a relationship as hermanos. The Steph and Dray and Klay trio felt like brothers playing together, you see Shai doing commercials with JWill and Chet. Paolo and Franz seem to get along well in terms of sharing the leadership roles. The guys on the Nuggets seem to all be connected with each other.
For two guys that have been together for so long, JB and JT APPEAR to have no personal relationship whatsoever. They dont get hyped for each other, theres no bro hugs, no rubbing each others head, not much conversation together when someones at the line shooting free throws. It doesnt feel like they connect on any level despite playing their whole careers together as stars and going thru the same ups and downs. I dont think they hate each other or anything, I guess they just have very different personalities. But it's just unusual to see such a rigid, almost frosty connection between two guys in their situation.

They behave like jealous siblings.

They behave like jealous siblings.
They honestly do.
But hey, they managed to win in spite of it, albeit with an uncommonly stacked roster and weak playoff road. And if they win again this year Ill give them credit. Nevertheless I dont think it's an ideal relationship for a team's two stars to have.

Larry Bird and Kevin McHale were much the same way.

I have heard that, and thats a fair point.
Like I said it's clearly not a "must" that they have any kind of personal connection or visible rapport on the court. But it does strike me as surprising and not exactly optimal. But youre right there is clearly a successful precedent and they have likewise had success in that fashion.
