What is the NBA waiting for with the MVP announcement?

The further from the season you announce it the less relevant it seems, and if youre not even gonna announce it during a second round series between the only two candidates in the race going head to head, what the hell are you even doing?

I thought they would surely announce it early in this series to increase the intrigue that much more, but the series could end tonight. What are they waiting for? For everyone to forget theres even an award to hand out??

I know for a while they were announcing it after the season ended, I think they did change that recently though.

Agreed, not sure why it'd be in the leagues benefit to wait this long to announce it.

Like pretty much everything to do with the regular season and indeed Adam Silver, it's a complete farce. No-one cares about the RS during the season, they certainly don't care about it when the we're about to start the conference finals and potentially two game 7s to get there.

The awards are for the regular season so they should all be announced at the end of the season prior to the playoffs, or no later than that first week of the playoffs.

The awards lost their relevance once the playoffs start so it makes zero sense to wait.

This has been suggested by many pundits over the years. I've yet to see a single reason why it hasn't been done. This staggered release of awards when everyone from fans to players are knee deep in playoff mode is up there with the NBA Cup and this year's ASG format of all-time stupid NBA decisions.

Announcing so late takes the shine off the award especially if the MVP loses in playoffs before receiving it. I remember when Dirk won his - so sad and bittersweet (and somewhat meaningless because of the loss).

Makes no sense to not announce all the awards right before the POs. People care less the longer they drag this on.
