View Full Version : Is Luka Doncic becoming an underachiever (relatively to his talent) like Shaq?

Both Luka & Shaq are among the most naturally gifted talents to ever play the league, becoming 1st Ballot Hall of Famers in their early 20s.
For Shaq, he's always mentioned in discussions about players who wasted their talent...
Shaq had the physical tools and natural gifts to surpass Michael Jordan and become the GOAT - if the former had the relentless work ethic (like improving his FT%) and took care of himself seriously.
Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson were on record saying Shaq should have won multiple rings and MVPs if he'd taken care of his body like a true professional.
Luka is slowly going on the path like Shaq, although he still has time to improve his conditiong
Luka and Shaq getting away with a lack of conditioning tells you what ridiculously natural gifts both of those guys have/had. But that's one of the problems with having so much talent, it can make a guy complacent when it comes to putting in the work in the offseason.
The likes of Anthony Edwards and Kobe Bryant obviously were talented (not in the same degree as Luka/Shaq) Jordan and Kobe, but they worked as hard as Bruce Bowen or Patrick Beverly that had to fight with all they had to get into the league.
That's not the case with Shaq and Luka.

The Lakers outsourcing the public for a Health & Conditioning Coach will change Luka.

Luka will need to join 1st options and franchise players from other teams because it's a historical fact that high-scoring primary ballhandlers (ball-dominators) have never won with "normal" rosters of 1 franchise player, and they also can't produce great teams, such as dynasties (3 in 5) or dominant title runs (4 losses max).. They struggle to win regardless of cast because their skillset turns everyone into spot-up shooter, which prevents elite roster construction, teammate development and chemistry/fits.

Luka might have been figured out. He always threw 1Q haymakers and surprised everybody with his ballsy KO style play as an underdog. That element of surprise is gone. And hes ridiculously exploitable on defense.
Nobody really ever figured out Shaq. Except the free throw line.

Luka was never great... He's the example of what Lebron would've been without teaming up - just another losing ball-dominator
bro needs to get in shape and play defense
thats what will make him all-time elite

There are zero examples of Pippen locking someone down as the primary defender, but plenty of examples of him getting destroyed by his matchup:
1996 ECF
Penny............... 26 on 47%
Pippen.............. 18 on 45%
1993 1st Round
Dominique........ 30 on 44%
Pippen.............. 15 on 33%
1992 2nd Round
X-Man.............. 19 on 50%
Pippen'............. 16 on 40%
1996 Finals
Schrempf......... 17 on 50%
Pippen............. 16 on 34%
MJ carried the Bulls to 6 titles with among the least help of any champion.

The 94' Bulls couldn't beat Ewing and barely .500 in 1995, so Pippen destroyed the goat dynasty QUICKLY - super fast
And I just showed you how every SF from X-Man to Dominique went off on Pippen... There are zero examples of him locking anyone up as the primary defender.
And if AD averaged 19 on 42% like Pippen's Finals career, no amount of defense would stop him from getting downgraded and traded... Defense isn't an excuse for horrific offense, such as the worst efficiency ever (which Pippen had on the 96' and 98' Playoff runs)..
Pippen was never a franchise player that built a team from scratch and was simply handed the goat dynasty, which he cratered to barely .500 in less than 18 months.. So pippen was a joke and a frequent punchline among players.

That's literally what he is, and it's proven by everyone falling short of his goat standards, aka multiple 3-peats, 70 wins + title, or his goat MVP caliber (MVP's that include either DPOY, or titles/scoring titles/all-defense).
So yes, he's a mythological figure that no one has been able to match.. Heck, half of Lebron's MVP's lack titles, and they all lack scoring titles and DPOY, smh

The Bulls were the only contender that lacked a 3rd scorer, or a good big man, or a 2nd "go-to" player - they had the least scoring help in the league and the least rim protection in a big man league.
These shortcomings forced MJ to achieve the goat stats that he did to win (PPG, FGA, PER, BPM, WS/48, VORP)
So you're wrong and when MJ returns to NBC, you will learn more about his greatness instead of the Klutch lies that you've been fed.

The 94' Bulls added the closer that MJ never had (Kukoc), who won 4 games at the buzzer and about 10 in the 4th quarter that year... They also upgraded every other position by adding Kerr, Longley, Harper and many more...
And they faced sleeping opponents - the 94' Bulls were the biggest letdown game of ALL-TIME, and they were still Ewing's b*tch - that was their caliber - Ewing's b*tch and it would've been a sweep if not for Kukoc's miracle shot.... let that sink in - it isn't a high caliber.

Anyone can average 17 on 41% with zero clutch, so MJ could've 3-peated with anyone from 96-98'.... And tons of guys could force MJ to average 41 ppg to 3-peat, so again, MJ would've 3-peated with any decent scorer and a decent team defense (#7 during the 1st three-peat).
The 2010 Cavs had a better scorer than Pippen at 3rd option and better-ranked defenses than the 1st three-peat Bulls, so MJ would've won with them... Btw, the Cavs had great defense since 2007, which was long before Lebron was all-defense, so he simply had a stacked defensive cast that included guys with all-defensive resumes like Ben Wallace, Snow, Hughes, Varejao, while Big Z averaged 2 blocks - all of this is more help than MJ ever had... Lebron could've won in 2010, but he choked.

Good god the generational stupidity in this thread is astounding.
Luka is in season 7, in Shaq's seventh season he had been swept in the playoffs by Reggie and Pacers, Hakeem and the Rockets, Jordan and the Bulls, Stockton/Malone and the Jazz, and David Robinson and the Spurs. He had 1 post season where he scored more than 30 PPG and he was on his second franchise.
Luka won with Brunson...and they got rid of him. Luka won with Kyrie and they got rid of Luka. Now he's playing with a 40 year old Lebron James in a new rebuild system in a competitive West that's 12 teams deep.

He gained 130 lbs. And he did win three rings during that period of time. Except he beat Reggie Miller at the end of his career, Scottie Pippen at the end of his career, Jason Kidd with one of the worst teams to ever make the finals. Allen Iverson with another one of the worst teams to ever make the finals. And oh yeah he won the shadiest officiated series of all-time against the Kings.
Luka is 26 years old and he's made the conference and NBA finals without a consistent lineup. Shaq had so much more talent around him during those Magic and Lakers years than Luka ever had and he had Jerry West in the office building a team around him. While Luka had Nico.

What are these excuses for Luka? He's had good teams for the vast majority of his career. Him being out of shape hindered him in possibly winning a championship last year if we're being honest. He was so gassed he couldn't even make FTs in the Finals and they kept attacking him because he was a liability. This year he was also out of shape even though he had time off to work on his diet and heal from the calf injury that bothered him for a while, again was gassed come Playoff time.
Mavs made great moves these past few years to build a contender around Luka but the new ownership did not want to give him that massive contract. It is what it is. In Shaq's case the extra weight helped him become more dominant in the paint, and Phil Jackson challenged him to get in shape and he did so for the 99-00 season which was the best year of his career, not only the stats but his ability to play heavy minutes and produce at the end of games on both ends. Once Shaq won he stopped working as hard and got away with the weight gain for a couple years until the poor conditioning and injuries caught up with him.
Luka needs to get his ass in peak shape like Shaq did and deliver the Lakers a championship.

A lot of this is just wrong. Luka was in great shape last season until the injury. He was in bad shape THIS season even BEFORE the calf injury. The Mavs did not put a great team around him UNTIL trade deadline 2024. So those memorable playoff runs from years prior were mostly off of his greatness. And with a decent team around him he reached the finals.
Conditioning is such a vague term that people not in the know don't even know what it's referring to regarding Luka. His conditioning problem is he does not take rehab and injury prevention care seriously. Not that he has bad cardio. Mavs were concerned that he would break down for this reason. But because he's built like Antoine Walker people keep thinking it's the other thing.

Luka could drop 30 pounds and he'd still be a defensive liability. Even 4-5 years ago when he was slimmer he was still a lamp-post. He lacks the instincts, lateral quickness, and effort/mindset to commit to defense. And him being in better shape per se wouldn't have changed the result of last years finals, because if it was that much a hindrance he wouldn't have gotten there to begin with. Teams before the Celtics knew to attack Luka on defense, it's not exactly a secret. Boston was just a better team with the right personnel on the perimeter defensively to make him work.

Also this. People saying these things are comparing what Luka has done( or hasn't done) vs greats through the lense of hindsight. As you said, a number of all-timers took 7-8 years to win a title. The only top 10 level players who won a title as the lead player within their first 5 years: Kareem, Russell, Bird, Duncan. Magic and Kobe were 2nd options/1Bs for their first 3 rings. But look at the list of names we're talking about here.

He'd be less of a liability. He played some good defense for the Lakers during the RS but it kind of just got worse as the year went along, that's been pretty typical for him these last few years. By the end of the year he's just making 0 effort to stay in front of his man and the step-back 3s he hits in the 1st half start coming up short in the 2nd.

That's what I'm saying. The extra fat he's carrying around contributes to the injuries and him being more fatigued at the end of the season. Now, you could go against my opinion and say he played 70 games and had a Finals run last year, but he did so while limping through the Playoffs and missing significant time this year as a result. It only gets worse if he doesn't improve his diet & his conditioning as he nears his 30s.

That's not saying much, though. He can be motivated for a few possessions when in better shape but he's simply not an impact defensive presence. A more in shape Luka would have been attacked by the Celtics last year as well, netting the same result. Frankly, his motor isn't that high and 95% of his energy goes towards the offensive side of things.

Absofu@kinglutely.
Luka appetite for carbs smothered in cheese, and alcohol is guaranteed type 2diabetes within a few years of retirement.
He weighed 230 as a rookie, 240ish in the bubble. Bubble was the shape he needs to be in now, if he wants to be a #1 option on a Lakers team that wins multiple championships. He hasn’t weighed less than around 245 since 2021. Has weighed as much as 270 the last few seasons. Mostly toggled between 250-260. Will continue to waste his “top ten all-time offensive talent” and disappoint if he doesn’t change his dietary habits (potato moussaka and ice cream daily) and change his alcohol/tobacco consumption.
