View Full Version : Alex Caruso is an elite defender

Caruso has been on the all-nba defense team twice, and might get a third award this year.
Caruso had the lowest FG% allowed in the entire NBA this season.
Caruso has the second best DRTG in the playoffs so far.
The Thunder net rating goes from +6.8 to +21.2 when Caruso is on the floor.
The Thunder also have other all-nba caliber defenders in SGA, Dort, Chet, Hartenstein, and Jalen Williams.
Posters on this board need to remove their ignorance about the Thunder's defense. They are easily one of the best 5 defenses since 2000 and the Thunder as a whole should be favorites to win the championship this year.

Caruso is the most impactful defender in the NBA when he's on the court. Unmatched per-possession impact. He's not the most valuable, though, because he only plays 20-25 mpg.

People were trying to clown Jokic by saying that he was stopped by Caruso.
The issue with this is Caruso never shut Jokic down, but Caruso is also an insanely good defender, one of the best in the NBA. So it's just odd that people are trying to clown Jokic based on Caruso's defense. It's not like it was Luka or Steph Curry guarding Jokic.

Once OKC made the adjustment of putting Caruso as the primary on Jokic Denver's offense collapsed. You saw that starting the end of Game 6 where they first went to it in a blowout scenario which almost turned into a winnable game for the Thunder. No one's saying Caruso just shut down Jokic 1 on 1 in the post but it made it hard for Denver to get Jokic the ball effectively, Caruso was beating Jokic to his spot and being physical with him which took a toll on the offense. A brilliant move by OKC which not only made it hard for Denver to get the ball to Jokic and have him handle it, but it also stopped the Jokic-Murray 2 man game where Denver had a lot of success with it early in the series in 4th quarters with Caruso on the bench.

He didn't make all-nba because of minutes per game. OKC ALSO has 4 other all-nba caliber defenders. So yeah Jokic had an incredible series against a top 3 best defense we have seen in the last 25 years.
Just a win away now from making his 2nd trip to the finals.

To be fair Caruso probably would've made an All-Defensive team this year, but he didn't qualify because of the 65 game rule. And he had lack of playing times too for a reduced role. He made it in the Top 11 in DPOY voting twice and was on the All-Defensive 2nd and 3rd teams the last two years. Also he took a reduced role this season. He was averaging over 28 minutes per game before this season, now he's not even logging 20. It doesn't meant he's not a top tier defender though.

I never said he was or agreed he was the best defender under 6'5". I'm just saying he's a top tier defender in the league today as a guard. As long as he gets playing time and 65 games in he's in the conversation for All-Defense the last several years.

Caruso absolutely is in the discussion for the greatest defender ever at 6'5". He's third all-time in career RAPM, which is a 28-year database going back to 1996-97 when play-by-play (PBP) data begun being tracked. At +5.3 per 100 defensive possessions, he's only behind Dikembe Mutombo (+5.6) and Kevin Garnett (+6.4).
This number also most likely understates because it doesn't account for the defensive value that he generates from live-ball turnovers. These scores are considered as offensive RAPM. This is a consideration for defenders with significant turnover impact on defense. Alex has the highest DTOV (+2.5) in the 1996-97 to 2024-25 database, slightly ahead of Tony Allen (+2.3).
Alex Caruso and Tony Allen have a similar defensive impact footprint:
Caruso: +1.9 DEFG, +2.5 DTOV, -1.1 DREB, -0.9 DFTR (+5.3 DRAPM) [8.2k minutes]
Allen: +1.7 DEFG, +2.3 DTOV, -0.7 DREB, -1.2 DFTR (+4.0 DRAPM) [18.1k minutes]
Where they differ is the average position played. On a scale from 1 (PG) to 5 (C), Caruso is a 1.5 while Allen is a 2.0 positional average.
What's so unique about Caruso and Allen is the combination of DEFG and DTOV impact. Usually speaking, a high DTOV comes with the tradeoff of a weak, subpar, or middling OEFG. It makes sense: guys who generate a lot of turnovers on defense are often out of position and gambling. Hard to contest a shot if an opponent is open.
All of the other high-ranking DTOV guys hover around neutral for DEFG. Alex and Tony are able to generate GOAT levels of defensive turnovers while significantly lowering the opponent's effective field goal percentage. Like, 21st and 29th in DEFG all-time; right there with great defensive Cs and FWDs.
No one really cares man. I read the first sentence then just posted this. You're just yapping over something insignificant at this point.

EFG (Effective Field Goal Percentage): Measures shooting efficiency, accounting for the fact that 3-pointers are worth more than 2-pointers.
TOV (Turnover Percentage): The rate at which a team turns the ball over per possession.
ORB (Offensive Rebound Percentage): The rate at which a team rebounds its own missed shots.
FTR (Free Throw Rate): The rate at which a team gets to the free throw line relative to its field goal attempts.
Where they differ is the average position played. On a scale from 1 (PG) to 5 (C), Caruso is a 1.5 while Allen is a 2.0 positional average.

Caruso has an insane -12.1 opponent regular season ORtg-adjusted on-court rDRtg in the playoffs. That's a 47-game sample. OKC has a whopping -18.0 opponent-adjusted rDRtg with Alex on-court over 16 games so far this postseason.
Playoff rORTG and rDRTG (relative Offensive/Defensive Ratings) is the player's career on court offensive/defensive ratings in the playoffs relative to their playoff opponents' reg season defensive and offensive ratings. This gives us a more fair measure of how the team offense/defense performed.
That's something you never get. You don't even know how to ****ing spell the word.

And these are listed measurements. We all know how inaccurate these can be. But what we do know that’s accurate? Jokic is bigger and stronger than Caruso. So no one with common sense clowned Jokic because Caruso is some scrub. They clowned Jokic and the Nuggets for not abusing and making OKC pay for such disrespect. Even ex nba players who talked ball better than actual fans have said this. The fact you don’t make OKC pay for their small lineups when you have a clear size advantage is mind boggling.
