View Full Version : Penny/Shaq > Shai/Jaylen = weak era.. here's my theory why OKC is winning

The difference between a player getting 10 APG and 5 APG is more than just 5 APG because there's another 5-10 possessions where the 10 APG player fails to get an assist but still dominates the ball..
Essentially, the 10 APG player is ball-dominant for an additional 10-20 possessions than the 5 APG guy... Essentially, Shai's ball-dominance isn't so bad because he's mostly scoring at high efficiency and otherwise NOT dominating the ball - he isn't a high assist player that dominates the ball to get assists... High-assist players don't win as the leading scorer of the team and need a big-time scorer alongside them to lead the scoring.
TLDR: in a league of ball-dominators, one of them will win, and it will be the least toxic one (a scoring ball-dominator, who dominates the ball much less than a high assist guy, who never win as the team's leading scorer)

Well if there's anyone who's take we should value about OKC, it's definitely OP.

When SGA wins will you call him "expert jump shooter" and ride his coattails to further your agenda?
Don't answer; it will happen anyway.

Shai is an expert jump shooter though, he has the touch of prime Rip Hamilton, but he can dribble his way to those high percentage 2 pointers. He is effective because he primarily shoots 2 pointers, which allow him to hit the tough shots that Harden never could.

In addition to shooting off-the-dribble, expert junpshooting includes the ability to shoot well off screens and move well off screens, which allows elite ball movement and brands of ball.
So no.. Shai isn't an expert junpshooter like Kobe, MJ or Curry and is only winning due to weak era... Penny is much more talented than Shai, but it wasn't an open-paint and ball-handler format back then

:lol anyone can be considered an expert jump shooter but what matters is how often the shots are actually made.

Yep. As we all know, OKC relies SOLELY on SGA and Jalen Williams for their success. No other player or schematic contributions to see here.

The top 2 scoring options ppg is the only thing that determines who wins games and championships, look at how much success KD has had with Kyrie & Booker because of this.

This is why 3ball's dream team was so successful. The team with guys who don't dominate the ball, aren't heliocentric, and are experts in the midrange. With two guys who have finished top 5 in MVP voting. And then add a 30 ppg scorer on top of that. The 2025 Phoenix Suns.

He's proving that it's suboptimal to have high PPG and APG - it's better to choose 1, aka have top-level stats in 1 of them... When it comes to scoring and passing, it's better to hog 1 category than both.
The specialist approach is easier to build around and easier to play with, as opposed to trying to thrive alongside someone that wants to do everything, aka high PPG and APG (hog 2 categories).
History proves this to be correct - the skillset that underperformed good rosters the most is high-scoring primary ballhandlers, aka "ball-dominators" who are high in both PPG and APG, aka 30/10/10 guys like Luka, Harden, Lebron, Westbrook, Trae, Lillard, etc (perennial losers)..
Part of the reason these guys must pass more is because their scoring repertoire is actually quite limited, so their 1-hit skillset frequently runs into walls and seeks bailouts from teammates in spots where Shai, Kobe, MJ. etc don't need them

This is definitely true.
The so called most skilled ever can't do a lot of simple things. They also can't make an entry pass, so Jokic can't get the ball easily in low post position and has to back down from the 3 point line.
They also can't finish effectively around the rim, how rare is it to see a reverse layup or an up and under? They just try to get the foul if there's a defender or pass out at the small threat of being blocked.

They're winning because they have the best playoff defense in a very very long time. They also had the best regular season defense which helped them to 68 wins without Chet for the majority of the season.
When you have this type of defense + an MVP + the depth it's very easy to see why they would win.
The Magic team that went to the finals had nowhere near this level of team defense. Star duos does not make one great....

Mods just ban OP already. Dude is a shameless troll.
OP literally boils down OKC entirely on what SGA does, completely ignoring insane depth and all-time great defense.
Put OP out of his misery already.
