View Full Version : Jokic was the MVP - going 7 games proves it

Look at the mighty Timberwolves and how they have no chance against OKC. Denver looks very good in comparison.

Jokic deserved the MVP, he is by far the best player in the world and easily one of the greatest basketball minds of all time.

He got a lot of criticism for his "soft" and slow play against OKC, but now it looks as if he was one better role player away from cracking the code.

If anything this should also tell the Nuggets they don't need to overhaul the roster, they just need to swap MPJ for someone who is just average and then get someone like Mike Conley to run the show when Jokic sits.

MVP is stats + team success. SGA had both while Jokic only had one of those things.

Jokic does not deserve MVP just because his teammates fluked out some close games for him. If AG doesn't dunk his airball against the Clippers we'd have laughed at him going out in RD1.

MVP is a regular season award and OKC won 18 more games than Denver. That is a huge gap.

Doesn't really matter in any case, Jokic is easily the best player in the world by a huge margin.

I was saying months ago that Shai would win MVP barring injury. It was obvious.

But every game the Nuggets won, it was one of Jokic's teammates coming through in the clutch. Take away either Murray or Gordon and the Nuggets would have gotten swept.

SGA is the rightful MVP.

The playoff series is a separate issue, but it was his teammates going 0-15 in the 4th that cost them a game.

Gordon was big until he got hurt. MPJ was useless playing with one arm and only helped in 1 game. Murray was just ok.

I didn't just make it up. It was actually 1-15 because they got a garbage basket at the end of game 5.

If it was even a 10 win deficit, let's say 60-50 instead, I would honestly still consider Jokic for MVP. But when there isn't a colossal disparity in statistical production, and one player leads his team to a whopping 18 more wins, it's obvious who the MVP should be.

And the Nuggets were up 21-10 in the 1Q of that Game 7 looking good. Then Westbrook and Caruso checked in and everything did a 180.

Game 7 was over before it started when Gordon pulled his hamstring in Game 6. Two starters injured is too much against OKC.

Denver matched up better against OKC than Minny has proven to thus far. That's not a case for Jokic being the rightful MVP or otherwise. You've watched basketball long enough, I reckon, to observe that the media tends to designate the MVP fairly early in the season, and it was obvious for months that SGA was going to get it as OKC pulled away in the standings. Jokic is pretty much at the point where his stats alone aren't going to win MVP if it's not supported by team record, because he'd be the default pick every year. Yes, OKC has a better team overall but we know how the MVP award works at this point.

AG being hurt didnt have anything to do with Westbrook and Pooper Jr having probably the worst playoff games of their career. And Caruso flipping momentum how he did. If you swapped those guys and gave Denver Caruso and OKC Pooper and Brick, Denver probably wins.

You want to give Jokic, Wilt's number of MVP's when he's only made the conference and NBA finals twice. Wilt was a "choke artist" and Wilt did that for half his first ten seasons in the league. I get the Jokic love but 3 MVP's and 1 ring is kinda pathetic, especially in an era with no dynasties.

Shai and Jokic actually have something in common, they force you to adjust to their game, like Celtics, but not with as many good players.

Shai doesn't seem to be as consistent as Jokic though. Jokic made OKC play slow and have to change their approach.

Historically the bar is higher to win another MVP than to win your first. It's always been that way.

Shai won the scoring title with high efficiency, good defense and the best record in the league. That is a tough combination to beat.

Mighty Timberwolves? :lol They would have lost to the Warriors in 5 if Steph played. OKC is just the best team out there this season. Jokic also had two terrible games that OKC barely won. If he showed up in them, they would be making the NBA finals.

Not at all clear that the Nuggets could beat Minnesota with Gordon out and Porter at about 25%. It would be close. Nuggets started with no depth. Take out key players and that gets much worse. It allowed defenses to collapse in an environment where refs are swallowing their whistles, while at the same time removing a release option for Jokic once double/triple teamed.

Best player in the league does not = MVP.
