He'll get another job pretty easily but I don't understand how any fan could get excited about Thibs coaching their team.

What is an NBA coach supposed to do to keep his job? It seems like anything short of winning the championship every other season results in you getting fired.

226-174 (.565) in the RS and 24-23 (.511) in the PS. 5 years, 2020-21 NBA COTY.

Tio they won't even make it further in the playoffs next year. Probably 1st round exit. He led them as far as any other coach would. Everybody loses except 1 team.

I don't get it. The last two years is the first legit success they've had in a long time and they fire the coach? :confusedshrug:

This'll go down like the Bud firing in Milwaukee. Overreacting to poor-faith criticisms like playing guys too much or some playoff adjustment he didn't make. NYK will lose its edge without Thibs' defense-and-effort drill sergeant approach.

This man did the impossible - got KAT to play like real center (at times).
And now they'll bring in who? Knicks can't get out of their own way.

That's a silly statement. There are a lot of bad teams receiving bad coaching out there.

Nuggets probably wouldve beat OKC if they never signed Westbrook and got rid of Mike Malone. Holy shit... if youre a white coach... your head is on the chopping block.

MEM would be the perfect team for Thibs if MEM didn't have its new hotshot European coach, Tuomas Iisalo. They'd probably work well together, seeing as how Thibs invests little into offensive strategy outside of offensive rebounding.

Suns need to hire him because they have no legitimate bench players.

He was a terrible game manager. The Pacers should have been beaten. The Knicks' window is small and he's the wrong coach to get them over the hump. And it's sick to see each starter play excessive minutes cause he's a stubborn man.

Think about his coaching with the Knicks (the problems). Now ask yourself do you see him correcting those problems for next season and becoming better than what you saw this season and last?

Kat and Brunson will be defensive liabilities under any coach.
I doubt that giving more minutes to Shamet/wright/whoever would make a material difference.

They need to sign some bench players.. Knicks offense is trash with Brunson pounding the ball for 20 seconds every posession.

You guys would've got cheeks clapped vs OKC anyways. Even worse. And thibs would've got fired for that.
If you couldn't run a track meet against the pacers what makes you think you wouldn't get smoked by the thunder who have the same style but better defense and HCA?
You weren't gonna win a championship either way.

I never said we should have or were going to win the championship. But if Thibs would have beaten Indiana and made it to the Finals, I think he would still be coach.
He used to be a good coach but overworking key players consistently became an awful practice of his in the long run.
Who are they getting now as his successor? Mike malone, i presume?

Let's see how Pacers do in the finals before we decide on if they should have beaten them or not.
I will say, Knicks seemed to lack a plan down the stretch in a lot of games, it was just Brunson dribbling trying to get around a pick, which rarely worked. Seems similar to Thibs back in the Chicago days with D.Rose.
You'd think he'd have gotten a strong offensive coach to have some sets to rely on.

That's who I would go for if I was were the Knicks. He's got a proven track record and always overperformed according to the Nuggets who wanted to fire him earlier, but he won a ring so they were forced to keep him. The only that went wrong in Denver is him and Calvin Booth didn't get along. Malone wanted to play veterans more than the younger players who might've had a higher ceiling.
He's coached the greatest offensive center in NBA history. Maybe he can help Towns some more? He coached one of the best pick-n-roll duos in the playoffs in Murray and Jokic. There's no reason Brunson and Towns can't do well in that.

There's no way Towns is on this team next season. It's all in for Giannis.

I think if he requests a trade it's not to New York. They'd probably have to move Towns and OG in a three team trade and then you're left with Giannis, Hart, Brunson, Bridges then whoever they choose to play in the front court with Giannis. I just think they lose too much to get him.

Get a third team involved that has draft capital and you trade KAT and OG or Kat and Bridges to that team while the Bucks get at least 3 draft picks in return plus fillers.

Instead of everyone pointing to the repetitive “he overuses players” argument. Why doesn’t anyone address the teams lack of identity? Who is the offensive genius on the coaching staff that isn’t getting the most out of the Knicks players? No issues there? Let’s just rely on Brunson to score score score. We will play defense and pick up his slack on defense.
Nothing would’ve changed next season under thibs

Nope. Not even winning a chip gets you job security. Just ask Vogel and Budenholzer.
The only un-fireable coaches in the NBA anymore are the legacy/dynasty coaches: Kerr, Spoelstra, and Pop before he stepped down.

Coach RAPM shows that coaches can have a far greater impact on defense than they can on offense. Mike Fratello is the #1 ranked coach for DRAPM with a -4.0 per 100 impact. The top offensive coaches are George Karl and Sam Mitchell at +1.2 ORAPM.
Thibs is 13th all-time in the data set and 4th among current head coaches. However, his sample size is larger (13 seasons) and more diverse, spanning three separate teams. Therefore, his standard error (0.8) is lower than the three guys above him.
NYK may have fired the best coach in the NBA.

Tom Thibodeau ranked 4th among active coaches in 29y coach RAPM with a +2 (+- 0.8) rating
https://xrapm.com/table_pages/RAPM_coach.html
That adds ~6 additional wins per regular season
APM mostly blames the defensive shortcomings of NYK on the players - Towns ranks in the 15th percentile in DRAPM

Probably would have given it another year before sacking him..
Who is even on their bench? No 6th man, crap shooters etc
