Veteran Marcus Smart has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and plans to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after clearing waivers, according to ESPN. The 31-year-old, who played in just 54 combined games over the past two seasons due to injuries, brings a strong defensive presence to the Lakers.

Nice move, always been high on Smart, he should fit in well as Bronny's backup.
I still dont see the cast around Bron and Bronny being good enough to make LAL top 3 in the West. But adding Smart to the squad cant hurt their chances.

He'll catch a lot of hate for the games where he doesn't hit threes but his jumper does hit some games and defensively he's the kind of guy you need in the backcourt with Doncic. Kind of funny to me that Suggs can get 30 mil per and Smart can only get 5. That's almost completely about youth and "potential."

Smart was making 19 million a year signed in 2022 which is probably pretty comparable to suggs 30 million now. Suggs also shot 40% from 3 2 years ago

That's a great signing. Reminds me of Avery Bradley in 2019.

I know that Smart has made good money (in fact he still is making good money). I was just pointing out how age (31 vs 24) led to such very different contracts for two similar players.

Great signing if he can stay healthy. Smart is only 31, perimeter defense on this team was lacking.

Lakers team is looking pretty stacked. Luka Lebron Ayton Reaves and Smart? Thats a ****ing beast line up. Great spacing and Smart will not only shore their defense up with his individual play, but also with his leadership and communication on that side of the ball. He'll inject a sense of urgency into them on defense. And most people dont know Ayton has incredible playoff numbers for what his role is. Like I didn't believe it when I looked at them. Their ceiling is through the roof with these two pickups if they stay healthy.

The names stand out but their depth is weak and the fit is still to be determined.
I think objectively theyre best served bringing Reaves off the bench and rotating him in when either one of Lebroncić is sitting. I dont think playing the three of them together maximizes the roster. Hachimura had a very good eFG last year he should probably stay in the starting lineup as a strong off-ball fourth option.
The starting lineup definitely has big potential altho it may take some time to gel. The bench is average at best. They could really use a second unit center with good size and a motor to attack the glass. They lack a real physical presence at the position. It was an issue last year and it hasnt really been fixed. Ayton is skilled but he lacks that dawg, and Hayes is a bit light in the cakes. They need a Drummond, Looney, Adams type to give them some minutes just battling in the paint for every offensive rebound. I think that would take them up a level.
