he says he would like to make one on one fights legal with no ejections like in hockey with the caveat that if you want to fight and the other person doesn’t they simply take a knee to opt out.
As you might expect, I support this rule in all sports.
And thing is, it might actually reduce cheap shots and “thuggery”. When you know nobody is gonna break it up wouldn’t a person not inclined to fight for real hesitate to use those fake bully tactics, and just play basketball?
to opt out of getting your ass kicked, you have to literally bend the knee in front of your teammates, friends and family. Now are there situations it would happen? Probably.
I think Tyler Hansbrough would’ve bent the knee here if it means Ron can fight him without interruption otherwise
https://i.ibb.co/8nwQ6yvR/IMG-2321.gif
you would pretty much eliminate the fake tough guys and hit you and backpedal situations like Carmelo in the garden overnight wouldn’t you?
If you know that when they spring up and run up to you, the refs other players and security are going to let them get there and do what they want unless you take a knee like a bitch wouldn’t hard fouls go down?
Might such an ostensibly pro fighting rule change reduce the situations where people get chippy and pretend they’re going to do something outside the confines of the game?
are you gonna hard foul some guy smaller than you if his teammate is Quincy Acy and he can step to you and challenge you to an actual fight you have to bend the knee in front of him to get out of?
now, Karl Malone would’ve still split Isiah Thomas head, even if he had to fight Bill Laimbeer after it. But these days? I think a lot of the chippiness would actually leave the game.
Make these guys just play basketball or fight for real?
I think they’re just gonna play basketball.

Too much potential for abuse. It would be disgraceful but some coach would have someone on their bench that was big and didn't matter and they would be challenging Steph Curry to a fight nonstop. Curry or whichever smaller player would normally take the knee but I bet that for some of those guys repeatedly having to take a knee all season long would wear on their pride. Intellectually every man knows that there are guys that will beat him in a fight but it's not something we ever want to admit and under this condition the guy is making this admission in front of a crowd of thousands and a TV audience of millions plus it will exist forever on highlights. By the end of the season you wool likely be able to make a one hour video of nothing but Curry taking a knee set to the beat of Shook Ones parts 1 and 2 alternating on loop. Either that or he's fighting Thanasis Antetokuonmpo 30 times a season (I do think that most coaches and players would not do this or else it would be much worse). You would have to put some kind of height and wrought restrictions on it that would make it too complicated.

You’re right about the potential but hockey handles that with the unspoken role that the goon protects the star and even prideful stars allow it. Star on star? The goon might allow it. But they won’t stand by and let your goon challenge the opposing star. You challenge Steph Dray is gonna challenge you and have everyone’s support in doing so. That’s his job.

Basically a Yellowstone situation

I don’t even think anyone would hold it against Steph letting Draymond do it either

Honestly, I don't need to see these dudes fight, we already have boxing & UFC for that. Big playoff game, do we really need to see Luka or Steph potentially knocked out in the opening minutes and miss the rest of the game?
Plus, NBA players are notoriously atrocious at throwing hands, it's just not in their wheelhouse.

I just don’t think it would result in more physical behavior. I think it results in less. Baseball people have been discussing it and players and others are saying if pitchers knew you could get to them and not be stopped…less of them would try to act tough by intentionally hitting guys in the first place.
Its a deterrent. If nobody is gonna stop him from fighting you…are you gonna pop off at the mouth at someone or just play basketball?

I'm just worried about what RWMG described and that come playoff time, the bench scrub is going to go after the other teams star and potentially injure him for a game or maybe even the series. No competitive athlete is going to take a knee and embarrass himself in front of the entire country so no one would ever take that as an out even if it was offered to them. I absolutely believe teams would implement this goon strategy if fighting were suddenly allowed.

I could see NBA players going for this AFTER Lebron retires. Until then they aint gonna risk getting a big whiff of Bron's smoke and having to square up. They saw what happened to Isaiah Stewart.
Nobody tryin to tussle wit LeHercules.

For a real life example….
https://i.ibb.co/7LJLqZZ/IMG-2328.gif
Carmelo obviously does not want to fight.
If nothing prevents a fight but keeping your hands to yourself to begin with…does he escalate that situation?
A lot of fake tough guys with security and 2 dozen players to stop the other guy.
How many “incidents” you think happen minus the built in protection against consequences?
Might these people who are really only there to play ball…just play ball?
How many hard fouls go away if you know the refs won’t protect you after you try to take a guys head off?
I really think guys might think twice.

There's generally no chippiness anyways nowadays with the flagrant rule fouls being so soft. When was the last time somebody got gooned like Bynum on Barea? Guys get hurt on non contact injuries nowadays.

This is the kinda situation being discussed in baseball….
A pitcher decides he’s the enforcer of the unwritten rules or whatever. Maybe you showed him up on a home run or…whatever. Maybe he just doesn’t like something you said or something that happened. He decides to hit you. Baseball players know it’s on purpose. Pitchers get warned because umpires know they’re gonna do it. So this happens….
https://i.ibb.co/hRTsck1R/IMG-2329.gif
You’re tough enough to throw a ball at me that is absolutely a weapon in your hands. But you aren’t tough enough to deal with the repercussions.
Really…is that pitcher throwing at him if he doesn’t have people to protect him?
Or are they keeping it peaceful?

Dillon Brooks or PJ Tucker will be the new league MVP. Hehe. James Johnson getting a 300 million dollar contract.

Well that’s a 3 Bowen attack not being chippy.
Those were rare even 40 years ago.

You'd have to make it a tech to challenge someone for no reason.

You’d still have the current system where you’d get a tech for such things. But you don’t punish the response like most sports do now. Having the only consequence of aggression be a fine for someone with 60 million in the bank just isn’t enough disincentive.
The rules as they are punish the response more than the initial asshole move. If you wanna be a dick…deal with some approximation of real world consequences or admit you’re not really like that.
Let’s just play basketball. If you take it past that…the let us stay there. So let’s stay over here. Most of these people don’t wanna go over there they just pretend for show.
Taking a guy out knowing he can’t take you out is just weak as hell. Let’s all keep it friendly…or don’t. Get rid of the middle ground that lets guys sucker punch you and have 20 people keep him from getting his lick back.

Yea, guys fighting in non fight related sports is stupid to me. Hell, I even find it silly in hockey. Plus, most people would look atrocious actually trying to fight.

The one trying to fight an NHL enforcer looked pretty silly being thrown into that pond yes….
https://youtu.be/YPwvspC000k?si=rz1rQPNUSApZe3oA
and you have to appreciate the NHL guy actually yelling “Bang” as each punch connected.
but that’s someone who wants to fight and embraces it. In the NBA almost nobody actually wants to fight, and I suspect knowing that they will have to fight for real or be embarrassed by backing down would reduce the fake tough guy acts.
I’d be in favor if it reduced the number of fights near zero. I’d rather there be no fights than people shoving and wanting to be held back to put on a stupid show. Eliminate the actors. Fight or play basketball.
