I just fell off my bike and hurt myself real bad

So I'm trying to get into cycling again and I decided to go out and spend the money on a high quality bike, so I went down to my local bike shop and dropped about $1200 on a hybrid bike. The guy at the shop assured me it was a very good bike and that it was ready to go in terms of riding it. I saw him put air in the tires and everything. So I put it in the back of my pick-up truck and took it home. Once I got home I decided to ride around my neighborhood a bit, and as I'm turning the first corner of my block, my foot slipped off the pedal and I landed sideways on the street and scraped up my right knee pretty bad. I think I hit my head too. My ankle hurts as well. There was an old lady walking on the sidewalk who saw me and she offered to help but I told her to call the ambulance instead. She didn't have a cell phone on her which was stupid, so I just decided to pick myself up off the ground and I told grandma to keep walking cause she was no help. I'm back home now with an ice pack on my knee and head. What do you think went wrong? Why would my foot slide off the pedal like that? I used to ride BMX bikes and ride off homemade ramps when I was a kid. I know I can ride, man.
