Only three players in NBA history have captured the MVP award three consecutive times.

Bill Russell: 1961, 1962, 1963

Wilt Chamberlain: 1966, 1967, 1968

Larry Bird: 1984, 1985, 1986

Players who were close.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 1971-72 and 1976-77

LeBron James: 2009, 2010

Magic Johnson: 1989, 1990

Stephen Curry: 2015 and 2016

Moses Malone: 1979, 1982, 1983 (I didn't know Moses Malone was this dominant, due to how sparingly he's mentioned..)

Nikola Jokic: 2020, 2021

Only two NBA players have won Finals MVP three consecutive years.

Michael Jordan: 1991 to 1993 and again from 1996 to 1998.

Shaquille O'Neal: 2000 to 2002.

.

Circumstance was a big factor in this, part of it was not wanting to give MVP's to Larry Bird or Dr. J. If they were going to give an ABA guy an MVP better to do it with the youngest one to jump over. Also the fact that Moses bounced from team to team and didn't become a Laker or Celtic gave him a lot of juice with the voters.

And why would they not have wanted to do this? :oldlol:

Where's Duncan 2002 and 2003 (players who were close)?

Yes, Moses Malone was dominant - I liken him to a freight train.

Reason I always had Moses ahead of Dr J and overrated KoBitch and Duncan on my GOATs list.

Moses will never get his dominance credit because Bird and Magic showed up.

Kobe (also Duncan) will always get OVERcredited because MJ retired, Grant Hill and Penny fell apart and Shaq failed at thorough dominance of NBA out of laziness (ZERO DPOYs).

That was a terrible mistake by me. https://www.basketball-reference.com/awards/mvp.html

Aside from Duncan, there's also Giannis Antetokounmpo.
