I thought the Rozier investigation was over But apparently not. I didn’t even hear about Billups. This is escalating rather quickly…
They can’t put the genie back in the bottle. The gambling is legal and that’s that. So there will always be money available to people willing to get it but damn…
How much money makes it worth it for a guy who made 100 million, has a 7 figure coaching job, and a locked up 200K a year pension to retire on?
Maybe the “mob” had something on him?
Whatever it is..I’m sure it’s just the start.

Jordan made far more than that and he had a major gambling problem and you know damn good and well that's why he stepped away from the game for a year.
Taking inflation into account Jordan was probably making that in 1 year and he STILL had a problem.
Gambling problems aren't just for people that have $5 in their checking account.
Kblaze8855
10-23-2025, 08:58 AM
Manipulation of Minutes to guarantee a payout isn’t gambling. It isn’t gambling if you can just decide the outcome. A coach can absolutely make himself win. It’s not gambling if Jordan could just have someone walk up to the hole and lay his ball next to it. It’s just scamming.
Unless your suggestion is, he got behind gambling on other things and whoever he’s in debt to forced him to rig Something for them. Which could be one of the things someone could have on him that I speculated about.
This wouldn’t be regular gambling addiction shit. It would be a convoluted criminal Enterprise. Of course, if they have proof, he would have to go the gambling addiction route and claim he needed help and all that, but it wouldn’t be that simple in reality I suspect.
Yes or No
10-23-2025, 09:01 AM
Yeah, you're right.
Also I was wrong about Jordan making that much in 1993. His big paydays didn't start till the second threepeat.
Anyways...
We'll have to see the exact outcomes of the criminal proceedings to know what they did, but yes, if they are fixing games that is scamming.
I'm sure Jordan was more like Pete Rose. Always betting on himself to win.

If they’re really gonna spend half a year grabbing up athletes for involvement in the executive games I know Tony is rolling in his grave.
Just cheap headlines.
I almost hope it’s real gambling. If it’s poker it’s a total waste of the governments investment almost no matter who else they catch in the net.
Even “real” criminals…you should be able to catch them doing something real.

Sorta depends.
If this stuff all stems from before he was head coach of the Blazers, I agree the "illegal poker" really isnt a big deal at all. To me anyway.
If he was doing this after he became head coach, regardless of how innocuous the crime may be, it shows an absurd lack of judgement and priorities to risk this kind of embarrassment to play poker.
So IMO the timeline/recency of it is the biggest question.

I don’t know if society is stricter or we just have people in power looking for media headlines. 30 or 40 years ago a lot of people acted like gambling was morally wrong. Like you were a bad person. We couldn’t bet money on anything around my grandma. They used to talk about somebody’s gambling husband, like he was a drug addict. He was the shame of the family.
There were church groups opposed to state lotteries specifically benefiting education.
Society doesn’t mind gambling anymore.

The FBI needs to be abolished.
But just to argue. Why do people let degenerate gamblers off the hook and no one else?
If you’re a drug addict, alcoholic, or womanizer you usually are called out for being a POS and ridiculed a little bit. Especially if arrested.
But gamblers face no heat.
Dudes like Barkley and Dana White can go on TV and talk about gambling away 100 million dollars like it’s nothing.
Lmao.

Billups playing poker with the wrong people. He should exercise better judgment but at least he wasn't betting on the games he was coaching. That would have been a huge deal. Playing poker with the mob may have led to that one day but a poker game can be declared "illegal" if the host is taking a few bucks from the pot. There are people that have organized a poker night with friends in a way that the government would deem illegal and didn't even know it. I'm sure that Billups had an idea of who he was playing with and for that he was foolish but I don't like seeing what he did get lumped in with Rozier (not saying you are doing this, just speaking about general opinion). Based on what little we know right now it's different.

If the FBI is going to try and go after teams for tanking they would be going too far. Sometimes a team just sucks. If a team wins 40 games they're gonna send the owner coach and GM to prison?

Its one thing for a fan or fans to think a team is tanking. You and I can make such assumptions and it's no big deal. To involve the federal government and penal system is too much. If the Celtics start 1-5 and decide to trade Tatum and Brown should Brad Stevens be sent to prison? Several teams in every sport every year come to the decision that they can't win the championship and decide to make trade(s) that make their team worse in the short term. The FBI should be involved?

Apparently Billups was being paid to play in games where the mob was using technology to scam marks. All of the players but 1 were in on it, and they would work together (using tech) to coordinate to scam the mark. Allegedly they had hidden cameras, a card shuffler that counted cards, and x-rays in the table to read face-down cards. They bring in a celebrity to distract the mark.

So if the Bucks are offered 10 first round picks and cap space for Giannis they can't do the deal? Are we going to say that any trade that does not immediately improve a team is proof of tanking? Or just losing? That would be an extremely stupid application of law.

To me tanking is playing guys that shouldnt be playing because you dont want to win. Jazz were playing williams last year when he should have been in gleague. Got fined for benching healthy lauri. Nba should be for proven nba players. Should be in gleague or elsewhere until they prove it
Xiao Yao You

Austin ainge says they arent tanking this year. To me that just means they wont be sitting healthy vets. Instead they traded 2 of their best players and will have even more unproven pkayers on the floor or play 4 bigs. Tanking comes in many forms. Trading giannis isnt tanking if you still try to compete

Far as why gambling isn’t treated like being a crackhead or hair when addict? The lack of victims I suppose. At least when you’re rich. Rich drug addicts don’t get treated like crackheads either. They’re in movies and people pay to hear them sing about being addicted to drugs. They are elected to office.
A poor crackhead destroys his family. Charles Barkley can gamble as much as he wants. His family doesn’t suffer.

"Victims believed that they were sitting at a fair table," Tisch said. "Instead, they were cheated out of millions."
Text messages between the defendants as they allegedly carried out their scheme show that, in one such game in Las Vegas on April 2019, Billups was winning so many improbable hands with the help of a rigged shuffling machine that his overseers said he needed to lose on purpose to avoid being suspected of cheating.
Following another rigged game in October 2020, Billups was wired $50,000 for his participation, the memo states.

It’s usually legal wherever they are promoting. So if the platform is in a state where it’s legal. You’ll see the ads and them pushing free picks etc.

I'm baffled by comments elsewhere like "they're NBA players, how much more money do they need?". Which is a gross misunderstanding of not just greed but the human condition. It's not about gaining $50k, it's about the fact that if you have inside information of a sure thing, in some people minds they're LOSING money if they don't put money on it. That Sopranos episode is an example where Tony bets on whoever to win that game but can only put down x dollars. He's annoyed with Carmela because he could have used the money he gave her to make the win even bigger. He won but still thought he'd lost.
It's just as dumb as when people say "why he cheat on her with that bitch? his wife is way hotter". Because of the juice and it's a free lay that you can't turn down.

I wonder what that incompetent snivelling rat Silver is making of this. A couple of days into the season and he's got a betting scandal complete with game rigging under the backdrop of salary cap circumvention.
Not just that but the two guilty parties, Billups and Ballmer, are universally regarded as "one of the best guys in basketball" and "the best owner in sports" respectively.
You couldn't make this up. But its ok right Adam? Because only yesterday you announced that the Larry O'Brien trophy decals will by back on the court for the Finals.

You also have to remember that a lot of these guys travel in rich circles. They have relatives, friends, former teammates... who are worth like 100m and upwards. If you're only worth 10-15m, you can't keep up in your circle. You're the broke dude in the group. There's pressure there.

Source: Bettors allegedly got injury info on LeBron James
Former 11-year NBA player Damon Jones was arrested Thursday amid charges that he allegedly disclosed privileged injury information about a "prominent" basketball player to facilitate illegal sports betting, authorities announced.
LeBron James was the prominent player, a source close to James told ESPN.
James was not accused of wrongdoing in the indictment.
Jones was one of 34 people arrested, along with Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, as part of a yearslong investigation spanning nearly a dozen states and involving tens of millions of dollars, FBI director Kash Patel said.
The investigation outlined two separate cases -- one on illegal sports betting and another on rigged poker games involving the Mafia, authorities announced.
Jones was an unofficial, unpaid part of former Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham's staff and is no longer with the team under current Lakers coach JJ Redick. Ham invited Jones to be a part of team activities after James spent the summer of 2022 with Jones present for many of his offseason workouts.
James was unaware that Jones, his former teammate and assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was involved in gambling activity when Jones spent time around James and the Lakers during the 2022-23 season, the source said. The federal indictment alleges that before a Lakers game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 9, 2023, Jones texted a coconspirator to "get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight" because James was going to be out.
James, who passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time leading scorer in the previous game on Feb. 7, 2023, would go on to miss three straight games because of soreness in his left ankle.
Jones allegedly added via text: "Bet enough so Djones can eat [too] now!!!"
Without James, Milwaukee beat the Lakers 115-106.
Additionally, the indictment alleges that the following season Jones provided nonpublic information to a coconspirator in connection to the Lakers' game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 15, 2024.
The Lakers had no comment on the allegations against Jones when reached by ESPN on Thursday morning.
Speaking after practice on Thursday, Redick said the league's anti-gambling rules have been reiterated to his team this season -- independent of the FBI's investigation.
"We've had two meetings on it already," Redick said. "It's obviously on the front of everyone's awareness given the last two years, but other than that, there's no other comment."

So the NBA had no idea all these arrests were going to happen today, but it's clear the NBA knew about some of the gambling that was going on, but chose to ignore it. How the hell do you clear Terry Rozier, but then later on the FBI arrests him for the same reason you cleared him for?
It makes the Eric Lewis (NBA ref) situation seem even more sketch now, more than likely the league found out he was betting on Celtics games and just forced him to retire so none of this would be made public.

And then approve a trade to send him to Miami.
The simple answer is that Jontay Porter was a scrub who was barely in the league so an easy target to make an example of and ban for life. Rozier was a lot more high profile so more advantageous for the league to do what they love to do regarding star players, sweep indiscretions under the rug. Especially ones like this.

Legend also says MJ’s dad was killed because of his degenerate gambling. Yup a victimless activity. lol.
A lot of good fix jobs when it comes to the “gambling mob world” scenarios.
Hard to believe what’s real when it comes to Rose, MJ, Donaghy, and everything now since gambling has been legalized.
I don’t think “legend” is worth taking serious in this world where people believe all manner of things they want. People have posted bullshit “evidence” online supporting theories they will never be able to prove forever.
I’ll stick to what I know.
Yes..gambling like a thousand other things can get out of hand and lead to violence. That doesn’t mean the concept automatically creates victims because the most extreme versions cause trouble. The list of things people have been killed over is too long to list.
That is an issue of people just being evil and general human weakness.
Obviously most forms of gambling are not inherently harmful to anyone and it definitely isn’t anyone’s right to tell anyone else they can or can’t. It’s one of the wildest forms of government overreach to me.
If I have a 20 the idea that I can’t bet it on _____ but I can use it to buy cigarettes and a beer is hilarious.
Someone somewhere taking it too far shouldn’t have anything to do with me.
I can’t exactly go shoot up a school with a bet on the Nuggets but people who oppose the ability to bet often don’t oppose actual tools of long distance murder being readily available.
People are so selective about what rights they think the government should get to strip.
Therr are serious conversations to be had about a lot of things. Guns, drugs, alcohol, smoking….
Some feel a need to throw “I bet you 20 they come back and win!” into that mix because on a large scale it can be damaging and corrupt…but I don’t know much that can’t.
I just don’t know how it’s my business to tell you you can’t put 10 bucks on the Rams. I don’t know from where I’d get that authority over you and not feel like I were doing too much.
But I barely feel like I should be able to tell an adult he can’t do anything that doesn’t let him impose his will on me and others so I’m not the one to make that call I guess.

These owners probably love the money that's pouring in because of gambling. It was always going to come with it's own set of risks. Even if Silver takes the fall he's probably going out with a golden parachute. This is what they all wanted. They will act like they're appalled and say all the right things but in reality I doubt any of them give a flying fukk.
And no this isn't an indictment on gambling itself. The issue isn't gambling, it's greed. This is no different than insider trading and market manipulation. Having said that I do think you can make the argument that the leagues shouldn't be endorsing it or promoting it.

How much money is enough? Billups earns $4.7M every year; that's probably in the 99.9% percentile.
The only thing I can think of is the coach today is surrounded by bench players who earn $20M a year, so jealousy/competition instinct may take hold.
