View Full Version : should Pete Rose be in the hall of fame?

I was driving home and I heard him on a radio interview. Makes me wanna raise the issue to ISH posters. Does he/does he NOT belong in the hall? I personally feel he does. His accomplishments on the field cannot be disputed. His character and integrity can be questioned all day long, but between the lines? Simply one of the greatest of all time. Isn't that what the baseball hall of fame is all about? It's isn't the hall of "ethics and morals." If that were the case, you could remove half the people. Yes, I realize that betting on baseball is a very serious crime, more serious than just about anything in the sports world, but these acts were committed when he was a manager. A lifetime ban from the game for these acts I feel is fair, but not a banishment from the hall of fame.
Thoughts/opinions?
Yes he belongs....but the reason i dont defend him in debates/argument too much or support him is due to his character. He's a sneaky, con artist, fibber scumbag of a person. He for years denied betting then confessed then denied then confesses. And he used his "confessions" so to speak to promote book sales which is no different than OJ Simpson "I killed them" book. I just think its hard to support just an arrogant jackass of a guy. Too many people speak on his character in a negative light...and his interviews, comments are just ridiculous. Guy also charges arm and a leg for baseball autographs and can be a jerk during that.
I'm sure there are well thought out written remarks when it comes to Pete Rose by folks...mine is kind of butchered but the point is he belongs but he makes it tough for people to rally around him because of how he is. Not even Bonds makes me feel the way Pete does.

he did the ONE thing that goes beyond anything else...
he bet on his own team...you just don't do that...that is the equivalent of a team losing on purpose for money.
if he would have been a man about it and just said "i'm sorry" then ok, maybe
but he is a stubborn jack ass...and I don't feel sorry for him

yes. what he accomplished on the field made him deserving of it.

I don't feel sorry for him either, and his actions should prevent him from being involved with professional baseball. However, everyone knows that he belongs based on his play, so getting him to the hall is just a formality. Maybe give him what he wants, but put a large asterick next to his plaque saying something along the lines of *banned from baseball for gambling*

He himself agreed to a lifetime ban so there is no reason to overturn that especially after all the years of lying then only coming clean when it was time to cash in on a book deal.
His performance merits entry but he's a scumbag and agreed to be banned. Him not getting in is fine with me.

He did admit to betting on baseball and the Reds (claims never against) in his book.

I missed the public apology
I missed the public apology
He did it on one of those major networks...ABC or CBS. Did an interview.

Here's that interview of him saying that he gambled: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ym59Xjlqz4
But yeah, he SHOULD be in the Hall of Fame but he kept himself out by doing what he did. Nevertheless, that doesn't take away the fact that he's the hits leader and was an amazing player.

definitely belongs... he never did anything illegal as a player (that atleast I know of) and therefore he should be in the hall as a player...

with out a doubt he should, he is leader in hits and played his hart out every game so what if he gambled on games he still was one of the best

Pete can go into the hall of hot burniung lakes of fire eternally suffering
Hall of Fame.
Go 20 years and then finally write a book about how you gambled.
The Hall of Fame is overrated.

I didn't say it's worse. I just think if anyone who uses steroids is a cheater and if they go to the Hall of Fame by cheating then it should be fair for Rose to be in the Hall of Fame. That's was my opinion and it's a free country so f?ck off, Mr. I have no life 5,772 posts!!

what I'm trying to say is, that he did nothing wrong as a player, but did more so as a manager... you can discredit his managing, but you cannot discredit his stats and achievements as a player...

Although Rose gambled, his statistics were because of his natural abilities, not from steroids. He may be a liar and a scumbag, but his stats are not tainted.

rigging a game>>>>>>steriods
He bet on his own team, meaning he was confident in his own abilities to beat other teams. For any of Pete's games to be "rigged" there needs to be another party involved, which never happened.

Betting on your team to win means nothing. And if you think it doesnt happen all the time you are lying to yourself. Players in all sports admit it. Michael Jordan was a gambling addict. You think he never bet that he was gonna win a basketball game? That dude cheats at go fish, bets the virginity of women he barely knows, and played poker till 8am on game days with the dream team because he cant quit once he gets going. He used to bet on whos bags would come out first at the airport and tip the bag boy to make sure he won....
But im to assume he didnt bet on the great passion of his life? Where he got so much of his sense of self worth and pride?
Id bet my life Michael Jordan gambled on basketball. And as a Bulls fan....**** it. Jordan was too competitive to lose anything on purpose.
Pete Rose was by all accounts similar. He was maniac of a competitor.
Unless someone proves he bet against his team....giving him reason to throw a game?
He should be in the HOF. The all time hits leaders is a hall of famer. Being out for lying?
Oh my...Pete Rose tells lies...like every person on Earth. How terrible...
Cheating matters to me. Lying doesnt. Hes a baseball player not the president.
His lies do nothing to society that matters.
Ive lied to people I love. Im gonna demonize a guy for lying to fans he doesnt know after he gave his blood, sweat, and tears to entertain and win for them for a quarter century?
Pete Rose gave more to the game than he could ever remove with lies.
I knew people who didnt even like baseball who repped Pete rose. Pete rose played like the baseball Allen Iverson. Gave all he had.
You watch old tapes people are telling their kids "Thats how you play the game!"
http://www.dealerknows.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/pete-slides.gif
Hes a hall of famer. He didnt cheat to accomplish what he did. People who did...are in the HOF. Mickey Mantle was on speed(and said more than half of baseball was too).....a PED then and now. All kinds of cheating pitchers in the hall.
Ty Cobb was a cheater, a racist, a bully, and I believe caught an attempted murder charge for beating a black security guard near death....oh...and of course he himself bet on baseball. There are letters proving he bet on the fixed 1919 world series...because he probably knew it was fixed.
Hes in the HOF and is never coming out.
But Pete Rose would bring that sacred institution down....
