I saw him play. I was a big hornets fan, and I liked the guy. He used his quickness to bother dribblers on the defensive end, and because he was so short, his dribble was harder to stop. He had a decent outside shot.

Jordan: "Who are you, the mascot"?

Muggsy was a good player. A lot of heart, good defender, decent jump shot. It's amazing how someone that small can put up decent numbers IN THE NBA, let alone make a HS JV team.

He was great to watch on the early Raptors squad; that's where I really paid attention to his game. My dad loved him, how he could still be effective at his size. His heart is what made him achieve what he did. Kind of felt sorry him him at times though, watching him play, and seeing ANY point guard post him up. Couldn't score very well but he could dish with the best of them. Never really had a jumpshot down pat either, kind of shaky. But man was he quick, he could steal well. I even remember seeing him run through big man's legs to get past them. Almost impossible to strip him, too. Great overall player to watch.

Muggsy Bogues is one of the most incredible things in basketball ever. 5'3 and can't shoot, but still one of the best pg's in the league in his prime. I don't think there can be anyone who didnt like his game.

Manute Bol, 7'7 Center from Sudan. Led nba in blocks a couple of times and strangely enough liked to shoot threes (usually not very well) in the later years of his career.

ya gotta give love to muggs!

15th all time leader in assist and able to thrive in the best league in the world-- at 5'3"!!

it was simply amazing to watch him on the court with all the big trees-- darting in and out. on defense, he was like a gad-fly--- always bothering and hawking the ball. he was a "hornet" in more ways than one

anyone have a video link to muggsy blocking ewings shot back in 1993?

He was the perfect compliment for LJ, back with the Hornets, Muggsy could dish it with the best of them. He was an absolute blur when he was running and he could apparently dunk a volleyball! (I have nothing to back this rumor up). He probably had the largest quads of anyone in the 90's, his thighs were enormous. My best friend in early high school was a Hornets fan, so naturally, I went against them, but I still loved Muggsy

Muggsy a great PG in the 90s. I loved watching him play. He was the leading assists man for the Hornets in their first.....7 seasons, I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Still an amazing passer. Imagine being as short as the average woman and still seeing all of those passes in the NBA. Crazy.

His best statistical season:

1993-94

10.8 PPG
4.1 RPG
10.1 APG
1.73 SPG
.03 BPG
35.7 MPG

FG% .471
3PT % .167 (2-12)
FT% .808

He averaged 4.1 rebounds a game at 5' 3"?? Marbury has no excuse.

I remember watching him come back from his first game from that super long injury (2 years was it?) to the knee. He got fed up with the traditional western approach on medicine- painkillers and surgeries- and saw a Chinese acupuncturist; then lo and behold, Mugsy was back and better than ever!

He's a great passer- he would have to jump as high as he could in the air during a fast break and then make a powerful, long pass to someone clear on the other side of the court. I remember one Charlotte executive (or was it the coach?) that said "Mugsy makes all the right decisions, that's why we keep him".

Incredible that any of us on this board has more of a chance of getting hit by lightning than getting into the NBA, and here's this 5'3 heart & hustle dude who proved all the naysayers wrong, Mugsy Bogues and Darrel Armstrong, two fantastic individuals!

Bogues, Dell Curry, Kendall Gill, Hersey Hawkins, Scott Burrell (any1 remember him? Mo Evans clone) JR Reid, Zo, LJ. Who else was apart of the Hornets? How the hell were they winning like 50 gms. Zo/LJ messed up a good thing.

Oftopic: Glen Rice played for the Hornets down the road and was the shyt! Anyone remember him then? Dude wore the knee braces...think he had black ankle braces or something....it looked like he was trying to match. It was tight tho...not sure what he was wearing but it gave him a swagger and he was insane. Dude could score ANYWHERE. Not sure of his %'s but I remember watching him like he never misses a f*cking shot...even drove and had some dunks. Rice was the man.

I mostly remember Mugsy when he was on the Hornets...He seemed to get as much attention for his height (5'3) as his overall skills...Wasn't a great player but he was fast and played with a lot of grit. He was kinda like a cult favorite for a while, he had his own lil' fanbase, a lot of people loved the guy. He seemed like a likeable guy off the court too

LOVED Glen Rice...He had a beautiful shot and was deadly behind the arc. When he was hot, he could rack up some pretty big numbers...

Yeah, I'm a hornets fan and I remember those teams. It seemed like they overachieved, but there were just a great team. Did you know Brad Miller started out as a hornet? He was undrafted and played in NC for two seasons before heading to chicago. Vlade also played there a short time, and Eddie Jones came in a trade with Miami, but that was later on.

It's hard to believe anyone that short can play in the best basketball league in the world let alone excel in it. Ok, I know this is bumping a very old thread, but I found it using a simple google search.

Muggsy was a nightmare for the taller point guards. He always pressure you on the ball. He always hound my Knicks guard ( Doc Rivers, Greg Anthony, Derek Harper) like crazy and they all hate to play against him. I remember Doc River once call him a pest because he was everywhere and you don't know where he is. He's very quick on the open floor and rarely turns the ball over. Despite his height, he was very strong but he's range was very limited. His shot was around the 15 foot range.
Truly an amazing player of his size to last this long and make it to the NBA.

larry david has seen him pee.

those hornets were a great team, remember when anthony mason was with them? he was one of the most intimidating of all time, especially with that ugly assa jumper. a bruiser, tough as nails who could run the offense out of the post like mark jackson. him, oak, smith and ewing... thats a nasty NY frontcourt also.

Who put Muggsy on Jordan in that play?

Unless there was a pick or something...
The play came in game 1 of the 95 Bulls-Hornets first round series. I clearly remember it. The Hornets got caught up in a switch and Muggs ended up on MJ for one play. Knowing that he can post Muggs all the way down to the hoop, he decided to call all of the Bulls bigs out of the paint to expose the Hornets illegal defense. The refs called the illegal D in the Bulls favor.

Anyways, Muggs was a decent shooter and good at running the fast break. He was really quick but couldn't slash if bodied up by a bigger defender.
