I'm a huge fan of 'TV on The Radio', 'Jimmy Hendrix', and 'Lenny Kravitz'.

Any others? Not hip hop or rap just some good rock n' roll. I'd appreciate it.

the jimi hendrix experience was the greatest, but i don't know if they qualify as a "black rock group" since only one of the members was black. the other 2 guys were white.:confusedshrug:

living color was pretty good back in the day. "cult of personality" is still a great song.

"Fishbone" is a pretty good alternative rock band. I saw them live in 2001. Those brothas love to mosh. It was so much fun.

why do people even care what color a musician is?

It's the sound and I like it.

I like black rock groups because they pull in some of the blues in there. It's unique. Does that answer your question? There's nothing wrong with that.

I guess the Rolling Stones, SRV, Clapton, Led Zep are nonexistent? Only black people pull blues into their music? Please.

I don't know if they'd exactly qualify as rock, but The Time were sick. And of course, Prince & the Revolution. Prince also happened to be an amazing basketball player. "You and your friends, vs. me and the Revolution."

The Time were a straight up Funk band, now their guitarist, Jesse Johnson can be considered Rock. Prince and the Revolution, alot of his band member were white, so probably not.

Jesse Johnson's Revue: Special Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7OPbznBq2I)

Yeah, Jesse and Prince had a lot of similarities... here is some more info a lot don't know about the Time...

The Time didn't actually break-up and go their separate ways, Prince split them up. Prince formed the Time and actually produced 90% of their first two albums on his own, with little help here and their from Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, ect. In 1982/83, the Time were the opening act for Prince and the Revolution, but they were outperforming Prince. Some folks used to actually leave after the Time's set. Prince didn't like this so in some of the big markets like LA, NYC, the Time weren't even on the bill.

Prince got so angry he even found an excuse to fire Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (the famous production duo who were part of the time then as keyboardist and bassist). They missed a flight after being snowed in, so Prince fired them. A year later, Jesse Johnson produced the Time's hit "Jungle Love" and had a nasty guitar solo. Well apparently it was too nasty for Prince, he went back to the masters and edited a lot of it out the mix. Jesse was pissed, and left the time in late 1984.

Yes, props to the cats who said Bad Brains, Prince, Living Color and Sly & The Family Stone! For more black rock, check out early Funkadelic, especially the first three albums, which rock harder than Hendrix! And be sure to check out the kings of black rock and perhaps all rock music, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band sounds good.

If you like Robert Randolph and can handle some preaching and testifying check out the Campbell Brothers. Robert Randolph comes out of a school of music called "Sacred Steel" because the steel guitar is the main instrument. The Campbell Brothers are a real rocking gospel group who are probably the best Sacred Steel musicians.

Thin Lizzy were an Irish rock band with a black frontman.

There's a few "white" rock bands with black frontmen.

The Heavy is one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQKsKbXN1A4)

Alabama Shakes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQEbAlFw5_0) has black frontwoman.

There's a festival in NY called Afropunk every year since 2007. It will have a ton of lesser known bands on their website.
http://afropunkfest.com/line-up/

The second wave of ska in England had a few black and white bands like The Specials.

Song is too slick to be a hit 40 years ago. Maybe 30 years ago, in 1985. It''s basically a stripped down version of the Time's "Jungle Love."

Funkadelic, Red Hot Mama's guitar stuff with Eddie Hazel is the stuff teenagers should be learning to play on guitar. And Cosmic Slop, those opening drums:

So is Prince...

Both of Princes' parents are African American . Both Jazz musicians from Louisiana .

His father was the leader of a Jazz band (John Nelson should have photos online) & his mother a Jazz singer name Mattie(looks like Della Reese).

It was controversial when Prince tapped a white woman to play his mother in Purple Rain.

The 1980's (no social media ) & it quietly died.

Neither of Princes parents are White.

In hindsight a real petty move by Prince to fire Jam & Lewis.

If he keeps Jam / Lewis on his Paisley Park Records may not have flopped since they were pretty good hit makers $$$$$$$$. Jam/Lewis co wrote / produced around 20 number 1 pop/r&b hits & dozens of top 10's.

They could have been hit/money makers & Prince allowed to sign his artists that all failed to make hits (except Sheila E) & led to to the closing of his label.

People have called Prince a controlling little midget so he would have probably found some way to piss off / hamper the careers of Jam & Lewis anyway.

The firing may have been a blessing in disguise some writers have opined.
