that is so hard... what's the relative value of bird and shaq? oscar and russell? are you concerned about who can carry a team best or who leads a team best? wins or stats? longevity or peak play? clutch performances or steady dominance?

Hell it's tough to come up with a top ten of guys I've seen much less everyone ever. I'll give it a try though. I tend to weigh clutch performance (do you come up bigger than everyone else when it matters most?), overall dominance (does the other team have to change its game to try to beat you?), and versatility (the ability to help your team win in multiple ways and multiple styles of play), so that's how my rankings are going to look.

10. Oscar
9. Duncan
8. Hakeem
7. Russell
6. Shaq
5. Kareem
4. Wilt
3. Bird
2. Magic
1. Michael

And that is one hell of a 1980s bias! (although seeing kareem play at an advanced age probably swung him down the ladder). It's very difficult to make objective choices with guys you haven't seen. I've watched enough ball to know that tallying a guy's rings and summing up his stats isn't enough to really know the player, so I'm going to underrate guys I haven't seen a lot of. Other posters might put more stock in numbers and overrate those same guys. Whatever. Making lists is entertaining.

2 Kareem
3 Shaq

I don't think you can be the GOAT unless you are great on both ends of the court and you have the accolades. MJ and Kareem are the only ones who really fit that criteria.

No need to read further...

2 Kareem
3 Shaq
4 Russell

7 Wilt
8 Hakeem
9 Duncan
10 West

I don't think you can be the GOAT unless you are great on both ends of the court and you have the accolades. MJ and Kareem are the only ones who really fit that criteria.

And Wilt, whom you rank 7th didn't dominate at both ends of the floor more than possibly anyone above him or 4 MVP's, 2 titles and 4 more Finals' appearances are worse accolades than the ones Bird or Shaq have?

First of all, you don't have to have watched someone play/live to at least form an educated opinion. Else, history would be a worthless subject in general.
Second, you express this opinion, then you call someone GOAT. Double standard.
Third, King over Bird/Magic/Shaq/Hakeem/Malone and a few others? It's your opinion, of course, but I still can't help but express my disagreement.

Big O's first 7 NBA seasons are triple double stat wise.
Big O is the only one in NBA history to have Triple double season which is near impossible for 6'4" backcourt player playing with scrubs every night.
Big O first 7 yrs with bucks had ZERO help as big men.

Big O's stats were deliberately overlooked for MVP because he played for garbage franchise. hence ZERO trophies. MVPs etc etc

Big O played in an era when stats, rules favored Big Men & Centers.

Big O will have 3-4 reg sea MVP in under 2000 decade rules if Lebron can have 2 MVPs.

Today's rules, Big O will mope the floor with shot jocker like Kobe easily.

Oscar is absolutely legit guaranteed Top 10 GOATs over Kobe & West any given day who had the luxury of collecting consolidation MVP or playing for dominant big men or playing for Lakers franchise.

Kobe is not top 10. Barely makes it into top 15.

i've said this 1000 times. PER, efficiency, stats, trophies everything is against Kobe for someone playing for 15+ yrs.

Kobe is 11th or 12th at most. He just isnt Top 10 GOATs.

TBH, ESPN & NBA media has done a fantastic job in convincing fans that Kobe is Guaranteed Top 10. & often picked over Hakeem & Oscar.

2004 loss & 2008 loss is never factored in.

that 2004 loss is solely on Kobe & also costed Shaq guaranteed Top 6 GOAT spot had Shaq won his 4th FMVP.

Kobe will only be farely judged 10 yrs after he retired which will probably be 12th spot.

Kobe is only guaranteed Top 15 GOATs currently.

His passing talent, rebounding talent is still questioned.

Even his scoring talent is extremely streaky even in his prime. one of the reasons he cannot have a single 47+%FG in his 16 yrs of career.

I'm happy with my t4, but the rest really is kind of loose. I can have shaq over bird and maybe magic if I was in a mindset of just who's more dominate, but then I could also have kobe be over someone like shaq if I'm in a dude, shaq cant play 4th quarters or in the clutch mindset. BUt I like the t4 because kareem has both stats and rings, russell has the ridiculous rings, wilt has the ridiculous stats, and jordan is a little of all 3 of them in 1 pot + clutchness.

What is the thought process behind a list like this? You obviously have russell that high because of his achievements, which is fine, but then how do you justify hakeem being at 5? He has to be there not because of achievements but because of pure skill. If pure skill matters that much then why is wilt so low? Is it contradictory?

Kobe is 11th or 12th at most. He just isnt Top 10 GOATs.

Kobe will only be farely judged 10 yrs after he retired which will probably be 12th spot.

Kobe is only guaranteed Top 15 GOATs currently.
It's not what the facts say:

Kobe Bryant's ranking compared to the top 25 players of all-time

Championships (5) - 5th, tied with Johnson
Finals MVPs (2) - 5th, tied with Abdul-Jabbar, Bird, Olajuwon, Reed
MVPs (1) - 11th, tied with O'Neal, Robertson, Olajuwon, Erving, Barkley, Robinson, Cousy
Top 5 Finishes in MVP Voting (9) - 5th, tied with Johnson, Bird, Duncan, Malone, Robertson
All-NBA Teams (13) - 4th, tied with Duncan
All-Defensive Teams (11) - 2nd tied with Abdul-Jabbar, Garnett
All-Star Teams (14) - 3rd, tied with Jordan, Garnett, Malone, West
All-NBA First Teams (9) - 8th, tied with Duncan
Scoring Titles (2) - 3rd, tied with Abdul-Jabbar, O'Neal
Points (29,357) - 5th
Playoff Points (5,280) - 3rd

Top 25 players of all-time list by SLAM (http://www.interbasket.net/news/7683/2011/04/top-500-nba-players-of-all-time-slam/)

Hakeem is there because his peak and prime was terrific. Hakeem is one of the greatest two-way players ever and I would have to say he is at least top 3 in that aspect. I can't blame Hakeem for not accomplishing as much as Shaq, Bird, Duncan, etc since Hakeem wasted like 5-6 years in his early years with Houston while those other guys always had terrific supporting casts their entire career. Hakeem eventually proved that he could win a title in '94 and '95 and he won it in dominant fashion.

Russell is not just there because of his achievements either. My post for explaining Russell would be far too long especially for people that know absolutely nothing about him other than his 45% shooting.

all-D 1st team, 2nd team, 3rd team are joke today because of the lack of real competition. Kobe is basically a shoe in. infact, even when he is not. Wade deserved all-D 1st team last 2 yrs. But Kobe was given a walk in it just for being a Laker, a much bigger market. in '80s & '90s, MJ had to compete cooper, dumars, DJ etc etc for all-D first team.

Kobe still haven't lead NBA in steals even for single year to be called all time great defender leave along winning a DPOY title. Kobe has never been in Top 5 steals IMO. It is a reality check for kobe despite media hype.

1 consolidation MVP in 15 seasons in a watered down league isnt good enough.

2 FMVPs in 7 NBA Finals also not enough in watered down NBA League.

Choker, inconsistent playoff performer, selfish, stat-padder, was more interested in his own individual awards and stats than about winning, etc. In terms of sheet talent and skill, Wilt is probably #1 but since he never had the winning mentality that Russell and MJ had, he isn't. He never had a dominant two-year stretch and his best seasons were the seasons he was like the 4th-5th option.

Let me correct it. I did not mean watered down era. I meant to say 2000, 2010 are "EXTREMELY Watered down" eras!!

Bird, Hakeem & Kareem never lost FMVP like kobe did in 2004 after being HEAVY FAVORITES.

HAKEEMs FMVPS are extremely legit as it came off MARQUEE MATCH UP extending into Game 7 & another defeating arch rival SHAQ.

Kobe's are extremely weak. Its tall front court delivering him FMVPs.

Hakeem went through D'Rob, Ewing, Shaq to get his FMVPs.

Kobe lost FMVPs to good players (Billups, Pierce). They are not even great let alone HOF Great like D'Rob, Ewing, Shaq.

all this matters.

Kobe "failed" to clearly dominate EXTREMELY watered down era.
Hakeem Dominanted EXTREMELY Competitive era for 2 years.
JORDAN Dominated EXTREMELY Competitive era for Decade & a Half.
MAGIC Dominated EXTREMELY Competitive era for a Decade.
BIRD Dominated EXTREMELY Competitive era for a Decade.

I forgot about that game. That means that Wilt shooting 1-11 in game seven of the '70 Finals (in a game that was over by halftime when LA trailed 69-42), and 4-13 from the line in game seven of the '69 Finals (and on the bench in the last five minutes, and while his teammates collectively shot .360 from the field, in a two point loss)...

cost Wilt 6-8 rings.

Where would Chamberlain rank today, with as many as 10 rings, had he not shot poorly from the line in those two game seven's?
