David West was on the radio and said he's well aware that Duncan will be coming to destroy them, and definitely play better, so that's the #1 thing they need to step up, their defense fo Duncan, even though he didn't do much in Game 1.

I think this will be a good game. Strange where the Spurs are in a situation where if they lose, they will be in a bit of trouble. That's rare.

don't expect another 5/3 night from duncan.

also, the spurs didn't practice yesterday. meaning pop didn't see the need to make any huge adjustments.

it'll be interesting to see if we keep the same strategy though of throwing any and everybody at david west. i don't think pop's ready to relegate to doubling him.

will we see duncan on west some? does pop even care if west goes off for 30+?

one safe bet is that peja is not allowed to go for 20+ in this one.

excited about this game though. it's gonna be a good one.

Its funny how all these naysayers and so called experts have picked the spurs and they thought the mavs would beat the Hornets.LoL i laugh at them...

CP3 is the real MVP:rockon: the hornets will win this series in 6 games. cp3 will show you next round when the play the lakers who the real MVP is.

hornets vs. cavs.

thats your NBA finals... it should be an exciting finals watching 2 of the games youngest and best players in this league.

I really wish I could watch this game. Unfortunately I have work early in the morning and I will have to miss the second half. I'm rooting for the Hornets though! Hope it goes 2-0.

Hopefully the Hornets win the series. If the Spurs end up being in the finals I won't be interested in it, just like last season.

Duncan is gonna have to do some major stepping up, not to mention they need to make up another 17 points because Bowen isn't going to be a top scorer for the spurs again. I'd say look for Finley and Ginobili to pick up a little bit more of scoring.

Hopefully it'll be a close game, and hopefully people don't miss dunks like they did last game

I'm curious what the Spurs do. I get the feeling they think they don't need to adjust anything. I don't think that's the case. NO was kind of out of sorts in the first half last game but they still stayed close. Duncan sucked, but SA got a lot more than usual from the other suspects.

SA is going to have trouble if Parker doesn's dump the ball to Duncan. If he hold onto it to try to get his own offense, then Duncan will have to deal with too much congestion and quick double teams. Parker needs to sacrifice the drive and drop it inside to Duncan. Duncan needs to control this game, make NO big men work and not allow them to float on defense.

I must be nuts but I think NO wins this one going away. I think SA is going to try to control West and Paul by clogging the middle, and I think NO bombs away.

I say 102-92 NO with the score being closer because of a late SA run.

Shepseskaf
05-05-2008, 08:31 PM
I think SA is going down for the second time. I'm not writing them off, because they'll probably make at least it a 6-game series, but this is NO's time.

Bad call on Oberto. Again, like Ely, his arms were straight up in the air.

Why is it so difficult for the refs to see that their arms are straight up in the air? Is it harder than I'm giving it credit for? It seems like a pretty standard call to me, one which is constantly blown.

joe

The Spurs get so flustered when they aren't getting the calls. Look at Ginobli, it's like he has no idea how to react.

yeah, they just can't get that straight. offensive players constantly jump into stationary defenders and get the call.. that's probably my biggest gripe with the officiating. just don't call it. the offensive player creates the contact and the defender is just standing there, why the hell is it a foul on the defender?

Ginobili probably feels like he has to deliver the ball into a spot where the various bricklayers playing on his team can't possibly fail to score. The Spurs are basically playing 2-on-5 on offense with Oberto, Udoka and Bowen on the court. Just brutal.

That's not in the repertoire for the Hornets. West isn't very good at getting position without the ball. He's not gonna catch and do a post move he's got to drive his way in there or have Paul draw off his defender for a layup.

The Spurs need to stop looking for bailout calls. It's tough because they're so used to them, but it's becomin a problem. They miss a lay-up, they look at the refs. The ball gets stolen from them, they look at the refs.

I've been saying for a while now how the Spurs are overrated. They played a Suns team that wasn't that good to begin with. They always have trouble scoring and they are a terrible outside shooting team. If they are going to have a chance at competing the next few years they need to snag some 20 something year old role players so they can match up better with some of the more athletic teams. They need some guys that can put up some numbers on jump shots, because Bowen is terrible and so is Brent "I'm so freaking old and slow" Barry.

The Hornets are really getting the benefit of the calls. As a Hornets fan and a Spurs hater, it feels good to see San Antonio taste their own medicine.

However, when this series goes back to San Antonio, that's going to totally change. The Spurs will start getting all those ridiculous calls, and that's when we'll see if the Hornets have the heart of a champion.

If anyone in this thread is counting out the Spurs, you deserve to be smacked right now. Regardless of how much I bash them, I recognize how incredible of a team they are. That's not a group of guys that you can sleep on.

And with THAT being said, game 2 isn't even over yet. So maybe I need to shut my mouth before I jinx someone..

As great as he's been this season....David West can come streaking in my office tomorrow morning and nobody will know who in the hell he is other than some crazy tall black dude running around naked.

Unbelievable game from the Hornets. A bit of home cookin' from the refs imo, but still, they played a much more spirited game on both ends and everything was dropping for them from the perimeter.

Spurs are in a huge hole. Game 3 will show whether this team (SA) deserves to be spoken about among the great teams of all time. Ginobili and Parker looked lost out there for the most part, and Paul looked like he could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted.

NOH was obviously the better team tonight. Not one of the Spurs big 3 stepped up (don't tell me Duncan stepped up, he just wasn't abysmal like game 1); Chris Paul showed himself to be a true team leader and the best player on the court when he helped to close out this game.

The Spurs postseason hopes rely on their perfomance in Game 3. They had better come to play because there is NO WAY for them to come back from 0-3 against such a talented team. Infact, basically both home games are must win because I simply don't see the Spurs winning 2 in NO.

x-factor tonight was Peja and Mo Pete, and amazing team defense from the Hornets.

The Spurs are DONE in my opinion. They're not the type of team that will come back from a 0-2 deficit. They never fared that well when they trailed a series more than a game. The Spurs are great when things are going their way, when they're not, they usually fold (2001 Spurs). The Spurs age is really getting exposed in this series. This is Kinda looking like the Lakers taking them apart back in '01.

The Spurs are done, I said that they were done after the Phoenix series. Only an old-ass team running out of gas pulls that "Hack-a-Shaq" nonsense as often as the Spurs did. They prevailed in that series, but have been flattened thus far as Tony Parker has been exposed as the scrub that he is. Spurs are showing to have a tremendous lack of depth, as once you get past "The Big 3", there is really no help to be found.

Once Dallas was knocked off, I predicted that the winner of the Suns-Spurs series was getting finished off by the Hornets, eitherway......

sure they are the #2 seed after all. it's just so easy to use the "no experience" angle

I'll admit that I credited the 1st round series to the Mavs being disfunctional (Avery, new PG, Josh Howard), but the Hornets are proving doubters wrong. Yes, even if they end up losing this series everyone knows they are for real.

And yes, if this team sticks together they should be scary for a long time. The Hornets and the Jazz are 2 teams with young cores that only figure to be better and both teams, while they may or may not be championship worthy this year, should be contending for many years to come and it will be very exciting.

The Spurs don't really fight when they're down, I saw that time and time again against my Shaq-Kobe Lakers. Remember when there were up 2-0 against the Lakers and Fisher hit the miracle shot, they folded like a tent -- 4 straight losses.

The Hornets were clearly underdogs. Spurs are favored in Vegas, and if you look at the predictions, I've seen TWO analysts who picked NO, Hollinger and Barkley, and Barkley picked them to be contrary. Look at the ESPN expert page. EVERYONE picked SA.

This series is not over by any means but NO had to win the first game to have any chance, and the first two to have a good chance. I posted back on page 1 i thought NO would win becaause SA would refuse to adjust, and THEY DID. They played basically the same as game 1 except with more effort, which got their guards in foul trouble. Very cocky game plan. The only change was switching Duncan to West occasionally.

WoW looks at the numbers and predicts the 2008 Playoffs, including the Hornets losing to the Lakers in the WCF. (http://dberri.wordpress.com/2008/04/20/the-2008-playoffs-by-the-numbers/)

As he notes in the body following the predictions Cleveland should be favored to win over Washington due to their homecourt advantage, but he was looking strictly at efficiency differentials (which, historically, are very good predictors of playoff success).

recycling my post from the other thread.

the big thing imo is chandler seems to really be good at stopping duncan, the hornets just seem to have a good matchup with the spurs, even when duncan catches it deep the double team comes very fast and most importantly the hornets are getting out and rotating very quickly, however, the spurs seem to be passing up outside shots in favor of sometimes forced extra passes. and then the hornets are doing a good job of clogging the middle when parker/manu drive.
alot of positives there for n.o.
but, in game 2 atleast the spurs not only shot the ball horribly from all over but especially from 3 point line, manu played horrendously turning it over a number of times and the hornets not only got the benefit of a lot of calls but all the loose balls seemed to bounce their way which several times resulted in open 3's from peja and mo pete. people who are saying the spurs are done imo(even thoe they are down 2-0) are wrong, theres no doubt the hornets are a match up nightmare for san an and have played terrifically against the spurs so far but they have certainly benefited from awful shooting(which will have to change if duncan continues to be limited), calls and a good helping of lucky bounces so far... this is the spurs, they will be ready for game 3.

they are in no way shape or form getting all the calls. thats bogus. Chandler was on the bench really quickly on two touch fouls. I fail to recall Ducan's foul trouble. I recall Ginobilli getting in foul trouble but he was having trouble walking without kicking the ball.

CP is a little hotheaded but it seems to be just competitive nature, the likes of which MJ and Isaiah had.

West otoh i'm starting to dislike. He seems like way too much of a 'tough guy' and comes across as a jerk. Maybe he thinks because he's a boxer he has to intimidate everybody and try to be some kind of bully. Either way he's coming across as a major duuchebag.

He doesn't talk, push or anything. He does the same amount of OMG IM FOULED as everyone does. Im not sure where this board (ive seen others say this too) decided West is this fake tough guy or acting up. You dont like his face or something?

I have always been a big David West fan. I love his game and don't think he is a fake tough guy.

The Spurs look old so far in this series but if there is any team that can come back from down 2-0 it is them.

Peja has been huge in this series so far. I don't think the Spurs expected him to shoot as well as he has and he definitely has been the x-factor in this series. You expect Paul and West to play well but I don't think anyone thought Peja would be scoring 20+ a game.

The Spurs don't really fight when they're down, I saw that time and time again against my Shaq-Kobe Lakers. Remember when there were up 2-0 against the Lakers and Fisher hit the miracle shot, they folded like a tent -- 4 straight losses.

SA still has a chance but it is verry slim
Your pretty off here. Fisher's "miracle" shot came in game 5 in San Antonio when the first four games had been split after the home team held court. Now if you want to look at a season where the Spurs didn't put up much of a fight, look at 2001, but then again that was a deeply flawed Spurs team.

It must be us then. Us none of whom have any vested interest in West positive or negative.

Agreed, and this is a player I like a lot and have liked for about 3 years now. I wish he would cut the tough guy stuff and just play ball. The extraneous foolishness doesn't come across as intensity, but more like an act... an unnecessary one to be sure. He's extremely talented, he doesn't need the extra showcase of emotion to gain an edge.

i'm not saying you can't like him, of course you can. i'm saying i'm not sure where it's coming from, becaue he's not a **** talker, he takes a lot of jumpers, he's not really in scrums (i can think of one yesterday). It's more a question - why do people on this board think he's this thug?

What adjustments do people think the Spurs will make in Game 3?

I think since New Orleans is double teaming, they might play Barry more minutes since they need a good shooter on the floor but then that hurts them on defense.

Defensively they definitely need to stay with Peja and I really don't know what they can do to stop Chris Paul....

All I know is if they keep putting Bowen on Paul instead of Peja they are going to regret it.

Again. :oldlol:

They should be able to find someone on that team that can stand next to Peja to make sure he doesn't get wide open 3's.

I think they just need to play D on Paul the same way they used to play D on Nash. Don't let him pass the ball. He made them look stupid last game with all the good looks he got the other guys on the team.

Spurs strategy last night should of changed when they were down by 15 to the only thing that might help them win the next couple games. And that strategy is called the "have Duncan sneeze and try to spit in CP3's mouth."

i thought this series would go 6 but screw all that...

its going to be a sweep baby. the spurs are old... time for some new blood to win the title:cheers:
