3 seniors and 2 juniors will be on the team who all averaged double figures last year. Plus the coach of the year is now running the show (Keno Davis). Could pull some upsets. Swept UConn last year with a 12 pt win on the road and 11 pt win at home. Also a 2 point win over ncaa team Temple and 16 pt win over ncaa team Arkansas. Keep on the lookout.

Rosario can definitely score. Who's gonna be the biggest impact freshman in the Big East?

I got Devin Ebanks, obviously. But the kid can PLAY. Should replace Joe nicely.

And personally I like scout.com a lot better than rivals. They have him at #9 in SG's, not sure about overall.

I'm not much on scout.com because sometimes i see stuff like under strengths-great shooting form and distance on shot and under weaknesses- needs to improve long range shooting for the same person.

But some big impact freshman in the east could be...
Ebanks
Kemba Walker
Greg Monroe
Samardo Samuels
Ater Majok
Mookie Jones
Mike Rosario
Yancy Gates

I think I'm going Yancy Gates as far as putting up big numbers, but Samardo Samuels as far as the biggest impact to his team. (like picking kevin durant for ROY, but al horford if you believe in "making the team better")

Yeah i was following a player named Justin Watts on scout.com because rivals didn't have much on him. He was being recruited by temple and had been offered a scholarship but he accepted one from UNC. Funny thing is he's from durham,nc.

I have no idea why Donte Green left early. He could have been top 10 in a year or two if he had stayed and improved his game. Not only that, Syracuse would have been an outstanding team next year with him on the roster.

Yes, they will be top 25. They are a fringe top 25 team in most preseason polls and they do not have a very diffcult schedule. LeSean McCoy is one of the best backs in the nation and I think Pat Bostick will have a berakout year at QB.

Best running back in the Big East. McCoy or Devine?

McCoy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V1InPPhTxg

Devine - Nominated for ESPN's "NEXT"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkvhIDsCJck

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDn_IIwUUhI

I think Devine, when he leaves, will be remembered as easily the best running back in WVU history. That is saying a lot.

Low End Theory
06-14-2008, 07:32 PM
Devine is a pretty small back that relies on his speed. He is able to excel at WVU for the same reasons Steve Slaton did. McCoy is bigger and can take enough punishment to be the feature back at the next level.

McCoy broke Tony Dorsett's freshman record for points and rushing touchdowns in a season. Tony Dorsett is quoted saying, "He reminded me of me." I'll take McCoy over Devine every time.

Well Michael Irvin is quoted saying "He reminds me of Barry Sanders"

Sanders > Dorsett

Devine > McCoy

Not true, he doesn't just rely on speed:oldlol::roll: He has the best balance in CFB.

He is a speed back. His style is to make a cutback and accelerate into the secondary. He is not even close to Barry and that quote is just another example of why Michael Irvin is not known for his brilliant insight. Devine can not handle a full load in a pro-style offense.

Too bad L'Ville will barely be a challenge now. I think the top teams are WVU, USF, UConn and Pitt. Pitt had an outstanding recruiting class, so they'll be back near the top soon. Louisville, Rutgers, Syracuse will suck this year. Cincinatti could easily be a 8 win team but I'm not sure...

Pitt has had great recruiting classes the past 4 years or so. They better step up this year. I wouldn't be suprised at all if they are the 2nd best team in the conference. However, my top two are 1.) WVU and 2.) USF..they are top 10 or 15 IMO.

I'm not sure I approve of players playing two sports. Bill Stewart is a big supporter of it. Jarret Brown, the backup QB, joined the basketball. Pat McAfee, the kicker, joined the soccer team. He told Pat White (A 5th round baseball draft pick) he was free to join the baseball team, but Pat said he wanted to focus on football. Much greater chance of injury, and your focus won't be on one sport which is important.

I'd probably go with Davis because he has the size advantage. Won't the 6'7" Jones get his mins ate up by Ebanks? On my list I'd say they'd have to replace Mookie Jones or Chris Braswell. I think everyone else is a lock.

Scout has Jones at 6'8. And from what I've heard, his game and Ebanks game are not similar. And Huggy doesn't mind to play a 6'8 guy at center. With that said, I'd go with Davis too though.

Huggins can get coach of the year. Ebanks is really going to have to stand out to get Freshman even though I picked him also. Donte Greene was a one and done 1st round pick and it was his teammate Jonny Flynn and DeJuan Blair who shared the award last year. He'll have to do more than score. You will this year. Great slasher, really good defender, plays better under pressure (see Duke game). Dominated high school baketball in Rhode Island, and has been a really good backup to Nichols. It's his time to shine, and I really think he'll be better than both Nichols and Collins.

Football News - Ranking the Big East Quarterbacks

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/bigeast/0-0-19/Ranking-the-Big-East-quarterbacks.html

1. Pat White, West Virginia: The senior had 3,059 total yards of offense in 2007, but new coach Bill Stewart doesn't want his quarterback running the football 197 times this year. White will throw the football more often in 2008. Can he do it effectively?

2. Hunter Cantwell, Louisville: Cardinals coach Steve Kragthorpe and his predecessor, current Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, are convinced Cantwell has an NFL-type body and arm. The senior started only four games in place of injured Brian Brohm the last three seasons, but he was effective when given an opportunity. Cantwell won't have top wideouts Mario Urrutia, Harry Douglas and Gary Barnidge.

3. Matt Grothe, South Florida: The junior improved in each of the last two seasons, leading the Bulls wiwth 872 rushing yards and 2,670 passing yards last season. With another big season, he might have the Bulls poised to win the Big East.

4. Mike Teel, Rutgers: The senior quietly put together one of the best seasons in the Big East last year, throwing for 3,147 yards (second-best in Rutgers history) in only nine games. With last season's thumb injury behind him, Teel leads what might end up being the Big East's best passing attack. Will he be as effective without defenses keying on tailback Ray Rice nearly every down?

5. Andrew Robinson, Syracuse: Robinson threw for 2,192 yards last season, as the Orange attempted and completed more passes than any other team in school history. But unless Delone Carter or Averin Collier can return from injuries, defenses will continue to tee off on Robinson, who was sacked a whopping 54 times last season. The loss of top wideout Mike Williams also hurts.

6. Bill Stull, Pittsburgh: Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt expects big things from Stull, who started last season's opener before a thumb injury sidelined him for the rest of the 2007 season. Stull doesn't have to be spectacular; just good enough to keep defenses honest as they try to slow down tailbacks LeSean McCoy and LaRod Stephens-Howling.

7. Tyler Lorenzen, Connecticut: The Huskies will try to get more from their passing game after ranking only 97th in the country in passing last season. Coach Randy Edsall leans heavily on his running game, but Lorenzen was pretty effective throwing the football when given a chance. He won't beat you with his arm strength, but he's an accurate passer and doesn't throw many interceptions (only six in 347 pass attempts). Don't expect Edsall to open up his passing game in 2008 -- top returning receiver Terence Jeffers transferred to Vanderbilt.

8. Dustin Grutza, Cincinnati: The Bearcats hoped to have Wake Forest transfer Ben Mauk for one more year, but his chances of a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA seem very slim at best (the NCAA has turned down multiple appeals). Grutza started 21 games before Mauk arrived on campus, and coach Brian Kelly hopes he'll be more poised the second time. If Grutza can't hold the job, Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones and redshirt freshman Chazz Anderson are ready to go.

PITTSBURGH -- Two West Virginia University basketball players were charged with scuffling with police and underage drinking after a fight at a Pittsburgh Pirates game.

Joe Mazzulla and Cameron Thoroughman were arrested Monday at PNC Park, where the Pirates were playing the Colorado Rockies. The two were in custody and awaiting arraignment Tuesday.

"We will let the judicial process take its course and the matter will be handled internally," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.

Mazzulla, a 6-foot-2 junior from Johnston, R.I., was charged with aggravated assault, hindering apprehension and underage drinking. Thoroughman, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Portsmouth, Ohio, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and underage drinking.

The school's athletic department said it would have a statement later Tuesday.

I'm interested to see how this plays out, and really hope they are not suspended for too long. I don't really care about WV, but I don't want to take away from this stacked conference.

Come on now, they're 20, who doesn't drink when they're 20? I say a one game suspension, and probation. At least they weren't stealing laptops.

They should know better than to do this in a rival's territory. Next time, get drunk and start fights in West Virginia, then we probably wouldn't be hearing about this.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh basketball coach Jamie Dixon's contract was extended three seasons through the 2015-16 season Thursday, a deal that came two years following his last extension.

Dixon will receive a raise from his $1.3 million salary of last season, when he was the university's highest-paid employee.

Pitt may have felt an urgency to extend Dixon's contract so soon after giving him an extension through the 2012-13 season in March 2006 because other Big East coaches were beginning to sign more lucrative contracts.

It really is amazing how many good teams there are in this conference.

I would not want to play any of the top 11 on any given night.

Right now, I like Pitt and Louisville as the top 2, but I am sure this could change fast. Both teams are playing with a confident swagger.

I just wonder how long some of the bottom teams will be able to recruit and ever get competitive. With so many teams in the conference for basketball, this can be difficult.

I'm a big Nova fan. Used to go to their games when they had Lowry, Ray, Nardi, Foye, and Sumpter. Loved Will Sheridan. Actually saw Nardi and Foye at their '07 graduation. Close friend went there.

I personally love the team, but I always question the coaching. Jay Wright seems to be more of a player coach and a recruiting guy than a Xs and Os guy. Scottie Reynolds seems to have regressed this year for no reason and I just don't get why he can't seem to integrate Stokes into the offense correctly. It's just a lot of chaos that requires the players to win mostly on talent than on structure. It's probably why they lose close games cause Wright isn't exactly a final minutes coach. Dante's the truth though.

naw Seton Hall got extremely lucky on a bank 3 to tie it and South Florida almost beat a couple of other really good Big East teams and we played at their house. Plus just beat Providence on the road today and would have been by more if they didn't hit every 3 at the end, 30 footers to boot. 5th in the big east now, and Syracuse on Saturday at home. They win that they are a 4 seed in the tourney as of now.

Jay Wright probably isn't the greatest Xs and Os guy but he does know how to use the team according to it's strengths. Reynolds hasn't really regressed he has just lightened his personal load as a scorer and he's getting other guys involved. He has his best assist to turnover this year by far in his 3 years. As evidenced by today he can go off if he really wants/needs to, but the team is better when Fish and Stokes and Anderson and Redding are contributing. Obviously Dante Cunningham is the rock of the team. I love Jay Wright...no complaints here. He's got the #2 recruit class coming in along with transfer Taylor King next year. We're stacked

o and i loved Sheridan as well. Fan favorite. Foye and Sumpt are my favorite Nova guys since i've been a fan.

Devin Ebanks is finding his groove and really contributing now. Da'Sean Butler is by far the most underrated player in the league. I predict they win the next 4 (the L'Ville game is when ESPN Gameday comes to town, otherwise I would pick the cards) and finish 12-6 in the conf which may be good for 5th place. Yes. They did drop the "men" from Orangemen. I always figured that since they have been called "Orangemen" for years and that their primary colors are orange, it made sense to drop the "men" and just be called "Orange".

I am trying to tell people that, but they don't believe me. Some fool in Big Ten country (I live in Minnesota) thinks that we (Big East) our overrated and not that good.

I just stopped talking to him because he was not making any sense after that comment.

Thank you. A man (or woman) with some integrity. It is nothing wrong with saying that one conference is better than another one. Heck, last year, I was saying that the Pac-10 was the best conference.

And for the record, I do love my Golden Gophers, as well as my UConn Huskies.

Excuses for what? Losing a game that really didn't mean much considering we have a #1 seed locked up and a deep run in the NCAA tourney to look forward to or the fact that we have made it to the tournament championship 7 of the last 9 years?

Yeah, Excuses like that. This is just a sneak peak of what is to come. We will be the best team in the Big East next year.

And don't be too sure about the deep run in the tourney. Pitt is known for choke jobs during this time.

The 1-3-1 was a killer and Ruoff was a terrible match-up for Fields on defense. Blair has fouled out in 3 of our 4 losses this season. I think it will be a good wake-up call for Pitt going into the big dance though.

Hey Posterize, what's up man? I know we are both big fans of J. Flynn and look forward to seeing him in the NBA. (Maybe even as a member of your 76's)

I am wondering though what you think about Andy Rautins? I feel like he has enough talents to contribute to any NBA team as well as or better than JJ Redick. Do you think he has any chance of making it to the NBA?

IMO he's in a similar situation as Lee Humphrey from those Florida Gator championship teams. Great shooter though. Humphrey was playing somewhere overseas last time I checked.
