View Full Version : Why Is It Considered Wrong When A Non-African Race Wears a Du-Rag?

Obviously the Du Rag was made for waves, something that African hair can achieve. But some people including me(Asian) use it to flatten my hair because it grows up, even at long lengths. But yet I am stereo typed as a black wannabe 'cuz of the Du Rag. Anyone experience this???

Why not wear a beanie or a hat?

One can prefer the looks AND the feel. Also, I sleep with my Du Rag on to flatten my hair. I used to use a beanie, but I always wake up with it off my head, or not staying on tight

most people do it because they are wanna beez! even if you had a righteous reason to wear it you're still going to get classified... when people wear things outside of their culture people automatically think they look stupid or they're wanna beez.

i am not fond of people that have locks (what the ignorant people call dred locks) that are of non - brown persuasion.

In america people have the right to do what they want so do you and if you get made fun of live with it change the perception or stop...

its just the world that you live in.

just like all blacks will rob you in the alley if you meet them at the middle of the night, and all mesicans will steal your stereo no matter where you park your car, all people that wear do-rags are wannabes.

i'm half puerto rican/half black and i get called out sometimes b/c i don't look completely black.

f'em all dude. do what feels natural to you.

Alot of Sikhs wear it now in England (well, in London anyway) and no-one really cares. I don't wear it myself though, used to. It looks right on some people but not all, so that may influence someone's viewpoint of thinking if it is wrong or right to wear a Du-Rag from a different race.

pants came into being when everyone realized how stupid it looked to be standing around in just your shoes

shoes were invented on the first day, about 12pm when the rocks got hot

No disrespect but have you ever considered that maybe you are a wananbe? If everybody thinks it it must be true. Seeing that you like basketball and wearing du-rags you already have 2 strikes. If you answer loot's question with a yes than maybe you should stop and think that maybe they're right.

Do you want to wear it? Do you like how it looks? If yes. Then **** everyone else. Personally I've never worn one or have wanted to, but I don't see why you would allow others personal opinions (redundant?) dictate what you like to do. As long as you're not causing any physical harm to yourself or anyone else. Do whatever the **** makes you happy.

He already seems to understand this. He can do what makes him happy and deal with how society will judge him, or he can just stop wearing the du-rag. That's his choice. It may feel unfair to have your character judged by your head wear, but that's the world we live in and it's not likely to change.

what I dont understand is the reason for a white guy to wear a something like a doo rag or a wave cap...

Its for kinky hair :confusedshrug:

I can see a white person with dreds or something like that, but I see white guys with short hair wearing wave caps :oldlol: WTF are they wearing them for?

Black folks can make infinite hairstyles with our grade of hair so the caps and bandannas and all that stuff is usually worn for a reason.

Yeah you fit the criteria of 99.9% of wanna bes. Doesn't necessarily make you one, but expect people to assume that you are one, especially when you're in the du-rag.

I know of ppl -- who weren't black -- wearing stocking caps to make short hair lay down bc the stocking would "press" it flat. (usually in a backwards direction) It's used to train hair. That is all I am aware of, and it is usually done at night while sleeping.

is a du-rag that thing that goes over the head and then has this thing that comes down like over your neck?

THe sun is really ****ing hot right now. I could use one of those to stop my neck from getting toasted when i'm balling.

Take solace in the fact that it doesn't just look stupid on you. It looks stupid on everybody.
