Some practicing Muslims drink. In Muslim countries it is forbidden but in Western culture, you will find quite a bit of Muslims that drink alcohol. If they do drink most of them do not drink during the month of Ramada.

Plenty of practicing Catholics have pre-merital sex but they still are Cathoics.

Your argument = WEAK

I wonder who are actual "traditional" muslims (ie sunni or s-h-i-i-t-e) and who are Nation of Islam muslims (who are radically different).

And maybe someone can clarify, I remember that either Kareem or Hakeem (there's a slight chance it might have been another NBA player who was active in the 80's or early 90's) claimed that they actually fasted during practice/games/workouts.

rarely do muslum athletes actually fast in ramadan

athlete or not i dont very many that ive met fasted, doesnt mean there not muslum. I play college soccer we have a couple muslums on the team, they drink alcohol, and they dont fast, pray, or read koran, but they believe in god as allah which makes them muslum.

Believing in God doesn't make you a Muslim, regardless of what name you apply.

Being a Muslim means living your life as the religion dictates. I understand that most religious people don't go strictly by the book because it's very difficult.

However, you can't just disregard all their rules and guidelines, then claim you believe in Allah and are a Muslim....

actually you can, but it just makes you look like a fool.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I have a friend who converted to Muslim. Guy walks around spouting off Muslim historical facts and beliefs, but doesn't follow 90% of their traditions. :confusedshrug:

It's a persons choice to do that. He could also use the excuse that it is harmful for him not to drink water. Hell Mormons are suppose to fast for 24 hours on the 1st Sunday of every month but I dont know one Mormon family that does that. They will fast for a meal or two and whats most important is that they know they did it for a reason.

Not too make this a religious debate, but I don't see how drinking has anything to do with someone being Muslim or not. True, it's a sin in that religion, but how many Jewish people do you know that keep Kosher, etc?

Kareem was a spokesperson for Coors... just saying.

The bigger question for me is are the guys on the list Muslim or do they belong to the Nation of Islam, because those are two very different things. Both have very different views on the five pillars of faith and the prophet's position, which is sort of like a Christian not believing in the trinity. Non-trinitarians may consider themselves Christian, but mainline Christians do not.

It's a much bigger difference than Protestant/Catholic/Maronite, because all three recognize each other as Christian, whereas mainline Islam does not recognize the Nation of Islam.

This site has lays out a lot of the differences: http://web.archive.org/web/20060828131229/religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/Nofislam.html

Basketball4life, you make some good points....but then again, if one's religion states not to drink and they chose to do it over and over again...they're not taking their prophets words all that serious are they?? Thus, making them hypocrites when they claim to be something.
People like that have the beliefs, maybe from being born into that specific religion, but for some reason aren't practising it. I'd call them hypocrites...not sinners...especially if they make no effort to change their ways and thin kjust by praying the next day that it makes it all OK.

Oh and most of these NBA players would be sunny(spelling?) Muslims...because shiiiite(spelling?) Muslims are predominantly from Iran.

lol that's like saying a Christian that "sins" in any respect isn't a true Christian.

Only a fundamentalist Muslim would do those things listed above. Most Muslims are relaxed about their religion just as most Christians are.

however its not true that not covering up (hijab) is a choice, its absolutely mandatory for a Muslim woman to cover herself appropriatley, PLEASE do not go around giving false information saying that its a choice or its a "cultural thing" since this is a fardh (obligatory) commandment mentioned in both the Qur'an and by the Messenger (saw)
I'm working my way through the Quran (about 1/3) of the way through and I haven't come across anything saying that. Can you provide a citation?

Interesting quote I came across yesterday: If the sinners/nonbelievers/disbelievers knew a little of Allah's mercy, they would never lose hope for paradise. If the believers knew of Allah's wrath, they would be filled with fear.

Another hadith: The Prophet (PBUH) said he had a dream and he saw a beautiful city made of gold and silver (ie Paradise). In this city, he saw a guy walking around but he only saw half of the guy's body. And it was the most beautiful/perfect body he ever saw; however, once he saw the rest of his body, he realized that it was the most vile thing he'd ever seen in his life. He was told that this guy mixed good deeds with bad deeds, but he made it into heavan because Allah forgived him.

Another story from Muhammad: Muhammad was asked about the Day of Judgment and about how Allah would judge people. He told his followers that Allah would talk to each person individually, asking them about their deeds. First he would ask their sins and the individual would admit to all his sins. Allah will forgive them and tell the person to now tell him his good deeds since his sins were forigven.

Short reflection: These quotes are kind of related to this thread and the point bb4l is trying to make. In Islam, the key is to put God before all else and constantly try to better oneself as a person. However, God accepts that people make mistakes. To me personally, blatantly disregarding certain rules (alcohol, pork) seems wrong, but doing those things in moments of weakness is a different story. Its like assuming nothing you do will be forgiven and constantly pushing for excellence while knowing that every little thing isn't the end of the world.

Now lets all forget out troubles with a big bowl of strawberry ice cream.
