[Good Old Willy]

A Man's good advice for the young bucks at ISH. Take it or leave it, whatever you want. But its all true.


- In the beginning the world is black and white. The more you look, the more nuances of shading become apparent. Eventually you will see so much complexity and diversity that only shades of grey exist. The wise man is flexible, but still knows where good ends and bad begins.

- "Good" is instructive, constructive. "Bad" is destructive. In nature it is easier to criticize, destroy, break or ridicule. It more useful to be a builder. Nature rewards builders with progress and procreation! Criticize the girl and her brother... or buy him game tickets and take her out for dinner. Who's building? Who is gettin?

- DNA, the basic building block of life is almost identical across all species on the planet. All of em. Plants included. We all come from one. Not only are humans descended from earlier mammalian lifeforms, but you share most of your core makeup directly with the trees and insects too. Suck it up.

- Girls really do grow more beautiful as they age. That average 16 year old? Just wait till she's 23 and you're still single... You'll have wished you were nicer and gotten better grades. Oh my goodness, Trust me on this.

- What you see in pornos is not real. Most of the sex related comments on ISH are dumb. Once you actually get a girl naked, you may be surprised at what she likes and doesn't. 99.9% girls prefer men who are caring, compassionate, careful, secure, kind, gentle. Once you can provide that, she might want to experiment a little differently... ;-)

- According to women, Number 1 sex mistake for men under 25: going too fast.

- According to women, Number 2 sex mistake for men under 25: thinking they are 'good'.

- Having a steady loving longterm girlfriend/wife is a wonderful, wonderful thing. The longer the better.

- 90% of women that graduate from highschool are highly attractive to men.

- Only 50% of men that graduate from highschool are highly attractive to women. So yes, its a competition and you are probably losing.

- Looking back 15-20 years on my highschool days. There is a direct correlation to how cool someone was, and how successfull they are in life. Inversely! Bunch of my nerdy friends are driving porsches, super fit, are decision makers in the news, have the house, toys, great wife, vacations, etc. Where are the drug using, wannabe jocks? Pumping gas, driving civics.

- The more I learn, the more I respect how much others know, and realize how little we all know.

- The Physical laws of this world are astounding. Among others, know that your universe is governed by the uncertainty principal. (damn!)

- 20 yr old Me vs. 30 yr old me. The 30yr wins it easily in every conceivable way. No contest. Smarts, physically, cash, opportunity, lifestyle, friends & family to rely on. There is so much that is now SO easy, so achievable, its amazing... *shakes head* In days of doubt think about that, and what's ahead.

- all of the mistakes you can possibly make, have already been made by others before you.

- Have a healthy dose of sceptism for anything and everything you see. Humans have all these etra senses. And a brain for thinking. Use em all, then decide.

- Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor. Sarcasim requires the least intelligence to employ.

- Those you love, trust completely. Give them everything they need.

- Humans often need different things than we call for.

- Believe in God

- ... and science. Soak up everything you can. If you for some reason do not like either God or those mathematical equations, then think of it this way. You have a lot to learn from your ancestors, family, and culture, and GOd is represented in those things. Do not discard God until you are ready to do so. You are not ready yet. Science is merly a broad term that describes everything around you. The more you study science, the less chance God will come down and smite you in dead in your sleep.

- There are lot of good books out there. Read em. Books are like cheating. You can learn all the toughest experiences and wisdom without having to go through all the painful processes. People that read diversely and deeply are valuable.

- Chopping wood - great manly exercise. And an artform. It takes years to get good. A generation to becomes an expert. Teaches you about the application of power not too much, not too little. Teaches you about angles - what to attack, where not to because you'll get caught. Teaches about endurance. Teaches you what hard work is really about. Gives you respect for your father's father.

- If you know when and how to sweat the details, you won't have to sweat the details all life long.

- Sport is good.

- Ignore the rude and foolish. You know who they are. They bring you absolutely nothing. Nothing. Just get you down. Ignore em. Leave em.

- Learn about at least one art form or become knowledgable about some type of artistry. It is afterall the pinacle of human achievement, and do yo wanna stay dumb and dirt low for ever? Personallly I could never get into paintingi much, but love carving and hand made stuff. It's fun to learn about wine for example.

Pretty good post for the most part except the god part, you have no right to be telling people they need to believe in god, and it's a very foolish statement to be making. Much of the rest of your post is highly debatable in areas, your stats for instance which are based off of your own isolated perception. Preachy post, sounding more like what you would choose to say to your children. There are many ways to raise and educate children, you have the right to raise yours how you want, but that doesn't make it the best way or most informed.

The basic message of the post is decent enough in comparison to most other ISH posts though, but you have a lot of life left to learn about things, there's so much of the world you are have obviously shied away from or been sheltered from, lots of things you have no ideas about. How did your nerdy friends achieve this? What steps did they go through?

One guy, was just straight up smart. Bit overweight, just average in other ways back in highschool. Never got invited to parties. Played with mechanical type toys late and computers. Not games, but programming. Blossomed late. Thought about art, animals, but ended up in med school. Research doctor.

Another guy just works really, really hard. And always did. He could care less what people thought of him. I know for a fact that the 3 of hottest smartest women in our grade are just killing themselves for ignoring him then. 3x failed mariages with losers when they could have had the nicest (and now) richest guy they will ever meet. Finance guy.

3rd guy is example of nice guy finishing first. Nerd who got the girl (wow) in University then settled into an enviable job. We were talking about his wanting a Cayman, that's why the porsche thing popped into my head earlier.

I guess high school can be summarized like this: socially, it doesn't matter, not if you go to College. In comparison to the rest of my life, literally nothing of importance happened in high school, even though I was in the "middle of everything". Everything afterwards has dwarfed it.

By the way, when I said "believe in God", I meant it just like that.

I did not say that I knew God, or advised people to believe in Religion. Am I religious at all do you think? On the contrary. The belief I encouraged was metaphyisical. Belief in the unknown and unexplainable. Believe in your mortallity, Blieve in your own insignificance. This is wahat belief in God is about. Not the christian God, or Muslim God, or a god, but God the unexplainable.

What I have learned is that no matter how far away from the classical understanding of God I went, I returned to a simple principal. "There can't not be a God yet", or in other words, No matter how much I know, I can't know it all, nor can any of us. And that is where believing in God adds more than not believing in anything. There is room for disbelief, just not yet, and only for the very advanced.

first, you're mixing up being nice and being a pushover. those two are entirely different things. at your age, you should know better.

- Only 50% of men that graduate from highschool are highly attractive to women. So yes, its a competition and you are probably losing.

Wanted to explain this a bit more. The %'s of course ar not scientific. I was just throwing them out there when I was writing. Replace with "Most" & "Half" if you wish.

What I was getting at was this:

I was speaking to my friends about many of these subjects over the past 2 class reunions, 5 years ago and this year. We were amazed how perspectives change. I mean there are so many uninteresting girls to get serious with, that the girls who made the minimum out of themselves were already attractive to most guys. We considered all the guys that would love to be with anyone, and realized that almost any girl coming out of High School will find someone who would love to be with them... maybe not us, but somebody would.

Not so for the guys. It seemed to us in hindsight, that maybe half of the guys we knew or heard about basically were losers. Drugs, messed up perspective, gave up on education, foul tempered, no skills, rude, etc.

Basically undesireble as a partner. So 15 years later, the guys would love to settle down with one of the girls, but not vice versa.

You can call it god, lizard-king or whatever you like, but conceptualizing what is beyond your reach as a unitary, abstract entity may help you focus the energy you have as a youngster in a positive, constructive manner without needing to go through any radical stage of life. Later on, once your head is properly furnished, there is always time to dismiss the mental categories and arrangements you used as a youngster. The book "Demian" by Hesse is just as beautiful as clever an approach to the matter. I dunno if I put it as clearly as I wanted, but I think the point is there.


- There are lot of good books out there. Read em. Books are like cheating. You can learn all the toughest experiences and wisdom without having to go through all the painful processes. People that read diversely and deeply are valuable.

Everytime I hear some older person 50+ on the radio or TV trying to discount evolution, I just shake my head, and think - LOSER!. Those people are so ignorant. They think what they learned in school 30 years ago is still the way the world is. Meanwhile, science has moved a billion steps further along. It is amazing how far the study of geology alone for example have taken speciation understanding.

- You don't need just bones to prove an evolutionary point.

- "Evolution" is the most supported 'theory' on the planet. If you add up the number of species whose evolution history have been mapped, it would be be like a football field, with every blade of grass being complete proof. Just because a blade or two is out of sight, doesn't change much. Its a field of grass.

- Perhaps you didn't know this, (I just learned this the other day) but in the realm of nano-computing, we actually know less about the physical processes than we do about human origins. Hasn't stopped humans from manufactiring and marketing the technology.

- There are so many discoveries that have been made in the field of geology in the past 2 decades. Our understanding of the progression of life these last 3 billion years, has been masssively deepened.

These areas are not my specialities. Not an expert, I just like to keep current with science journals and popular reading, such as Bill Bryson's "A short History of Nearly Everything" (Great book, great audio book for driving in the car)

I thought the Gore movie added much useful information to the average person's awareness. Counter opinions are productive, but I found some of the harsher criticism amusing and pretty naive.

There seems to be alot of information on the subject of global wamring available, though I tend to ignore the opinion pieces and read only what actually researchers have to say. I find it particularily interesting and relevent what geologists -- and those studying plate techtonics and glaciation in particular -- have to say.

Apparently, not only has the earth been in billion year long warming cycles, but there are peaks and valleys inside these cycles. i.e. There a have been (4?) major ice ages in earth's history but major temperature shifts between them (glacials /interglacials). Considering just the very recent last million years, apparently we are in the warming trend form the last glaciation that uncovered north america a couple hundred thousand years ago. I'm sure wikipedia or the economist.com would proide better information about this...

In my opinion, most people understand global warming as just what has been happening in the past 100 years, and what humans have done to impact it. From what I gather is the consensus opinion among scientists, there now seems to be no question that:

- the earth's oceans (and consequently the rest of the planet's surface) has been warming up by a few degrees these last few decades

- that human activities such as agriculture, pollution, ozone depletion, etc. have quite suddenly drastrically affected the enviroment

- and that most of the humans on this planet probably would not survive a 5 degree (!!) jump in the planet's average surface temperature.

Where I believe the major topic of debate is, is how much the planet is just in a natural cycle vs. how much of a role humans have.

Teaches you about angles - what to attack, where not to because you'll get caught. Teaches about endurance. Teaches you what hard work is really about. Gives you respect for your father's father.

- If you know when and how to sweat the details, you won't have to sweat the details all life long.

- Sport is good.

- Ignore the rude and foolish. You know who they are. They bring you absolutely nothing. Nothing. Just get you down. Ignore em. Leave em.

- Learn about at least one art form or become knowledgeable about some type of artistry. It is afterall the pinacle of human achievement, and do you wanna stay dumb and dirt low for ever? Personally I could never get into painting much, but love carving and hand made stuff. It's fun to learn about wine for example.

- There are lot of good books out there. Read em. Books are like cheating. You can learn all the toughest experiences and wisdom without having to go through all the painful processes. People that read diversely and deeply are valuable.

- Chopping wood - great manly exercise. And an artform. It takes years to get good. A generation to becomes an expert. Teaches you about the application of power not too much, not too little. Teaches you about angles - what to attack, where not to because you'll get caught. Teaches about endurance. Teaches you what hard work is really about. Gives you respect for your father's father.

- If you know when and how to sweat the details, you won't have to sweat the details all life long.

- Sport is good.

- Ignore the rude and foolish. You know who they are. They bring you absolutely nothing. Nothing. Just get you down. Ignore em. Leave em.

- Learn about at least one art form or become knowledgable about some type of artistry. It is afterall the pinacle of human achievement, and do yo wanna stay dumb and dirt low for ever? Personallly I could never get into paintingi much, but love carving and hand made stuff. It's fun to learn about wine for example.

good old willy was strange, i could never figure out if he was a new poster or somebody's alt.... i always leaned towards the latter but i'm suspicious about a lot of posters for specious reasons lol

the 20 vs 30 stuff is interesting and i've got no objectivity here but i disagree, on freedom vs stability you only have to long to appreciate the former before it gets whittled away by the latter.... which you can then enjoy for a solid 40-50 years...

still haven't gotten around to operating that chainsaw........
